The Haven's 25th Anniversary Open House

a cake a cake

2008 marks 25 years since Ben Wong and Jock McKeen founded this amazing place that we know as The Haven. It's been an incredible year so far, and it's not over yet!

Before the summer is over, we invite you to celebrate not just our first 25 years but the next 25 too! The Haven's 25th Anniversary Open House celebration will take place on the afternoon of Sunday September 14, 2008. This is an open invitation to old friends and new to join us for an afternoon of connection, information and some fun too! It's a fabulous opportunity for new people to find out more about what we do, as well as a chance to reconnect with old friends. Events will run from 1-4pm and we will be offering a tempting taste of the range what The Haven offers, as well as our plans for the future.

This event is free of charge and we would love to have as many people as possible join us. There will be lots more information in the next Haven News Update. In the meantime, mark this date in your diary and keep the afternoon of Sunday September 14 free.

For more information, contact Rachel Davey (rachel[at]haven.ca, 1 877 247 9238 ext 235).

Kids in the Spotlight 2008 and the Youth Leadership Program
Youth Leaders taking KITS participants through their paces
So far this summer we have enjoyed three wonderful and distinctly different special performances of 'Hairspray', courtesy of the Kids in the Spotlight (KITS) participants. If you ever have had the opportunity to see a performance, you will know just how amazing it is to see kids from 5 upwards creating their own special version of a musical - in just 4 days. Denise Goldbeck and Mackenzie Dickson, and the Youth Leaders working with them, ensure that each child has a wonderful experience, not only of the performance but the process of creating such an amazing event together. It really is a unique course, and kids come back year after year for many years to enjoy themselves and learn lots in the process. In fact, for the first time this year we have our first Dance and Games for Kids participant bring her own children to Kids in the Spotlight ten years on!

As well as providing all this for the kids, this is the second year that Denise has been able to provide additional sessions for parents and caregivers. With the support of Toby Macklin, this year's sessions have focused on the practical implications of child development theory for personal growth and parenting. There has been a lot of positive feedback on this work, and Denise intends to continue and expand on this good work in the future. One of the main reasons that this opportunity can be offered, is the strength of the support provided by the young people who work with Denise, as part of the Youth Leadership Program.

This is the second year of Haven Foundation's Youth Leadership Program, and it is wonderful to see the program going from strength to strength. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to extend the training program to three days, kicking off with an amazing teambuilding experience at Treego (part of the Wildplay Element Park in Nanaimo). The excellence of the training program has a direct and positive effect on the work of the Youth Leaders, and therefore the experience of all of the participants, as well as the parents and caregivers.

We are well on the way to achieving our goal of having the Youth Leadership Program be self supporting within 5 years. In the meantime, we continue to appreciate the donations offered, and welcome any and all support. To find our more about the Youth Leadership Program or make a donation, contact Rachel Davey (rachel[at]haven.ca, 1 877 247 9238 ext 235) or visit our web site.

What's Hot in August!
August is the time that we welcome new and old faces to our ever popular Teens Alive courses led by David Raithby and Linda Nicholls. After a successful launch last year, David and Linda will again be offering 19 and Beyond, a course for young adults entering a new and challenging phase of their lives. August also sees the beginning of Phase III: New Horizons, led by Jane Olynyk and Wayne Dodge, which continues through to September 6. There are two opportunities to take Come Alive, led at the beginning of the month by Susan Clarke and Derek LaCroix, and towards the end of August by Cathy and Ernie McNally.

And there is much, much more! You can start the month with Elfi Dillon-Shaw and Simply Touching. Greg Gurel returns with Joann Peterson's incredible Anger, Boundaries and Safety course. You can explore your creative edge with Ellery Littleton (From Memory to Memoir) and/or Lyle Povah (Drum Talk). Marlyn Farrell leads Primal Nudgings (for women) and Carol Ames and Bill Leuze offer Bleep of Faith. Carole returns at the end of the month with The Quantum Laugh and Judy Sellner offers Couples in Conflict mid-August. As ever, we look forward with excitement to the return of Maria Gomori with Family Reconstruction, which is preceded by Satir Foundations, led by Cathy McNally. (You can hear an interview with Maria in the latest edition of the online Shen.)

We are offering an amazing range of experiences with our exceptional faculty in August and we would love you to join us. To register for any of our courses, use the links above, or contact our Registrars (registrar[at]haven.ca, 1 877 247 9238 ext 234).

Remembering Steve Davis
Steve Davis and Dawn Mills Steve Davis, a director of the Haven Foundation Board, a faculty member and a long-time friend and supporter of The Haven, passed away at the beginning of April this year. Steve was greatly loved and will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to come in contact with him. We are happy to pass on the following information about events to celebrate Steve's life, on behalf of Dawn Mills.

Dear Colleagues, Clients, Friends, and Family:

Please join us for Steve's Life Celebration on Sunday, July 27th, 2008 at 3:00 pm (refreshments will be served immediately following).

The Masonic Lodge, 1495 West 8th Avenue (4th Floor) in Vancouver, BC (just East Granville Street); street parking.

Other Notes:
1. Throughout the Celebration we will be having Open Mike moments and I would love it, for those of you who feel comfortable doing so, if you came prepared to share something (a memory, a story, a sighting, a pun, etc.) of your connection with Steve.

2. Please RSVP your attendance (yes or no) to Esther Sarlo at: esther@myconciergevancouver.com or 604.253.3039

3. Attire: This is a celebration and party...dress how you most feel comfortable (Steve's clothing tastes ranged from quirky slogan t-shirts and Hawaiian shirts (following in his father's footsteps) to casual/formal dress...take your pick).

4. Please pass this invitation along to anyone you know who might wish to join us.

5. In honour of Steve's love of wine and juggling balls, please feel free to bring both to the Celebration.

Steve's Picnic Saturday, July 26th, 2008 beginning at 4:30pm.
For those of you who are interested, we are having an informal picnic at Spanish Banks the evening before Steve's Celebration.

Time: 4:30 pm to.... (It's a Festival of Lights night so Fireworks will be happening at 10pm). Come whenever you like...stay as long as you like.

Location: Spanish Banks find the newest Concession building (farthest West) and look for the balloons just west of that.

What To Bring: BYOE please bring everything that you need for food, barbecuing, seating, and accessories (including blankets for the cooler evening). This is not a potluck but if you would like to bring extras to share that's great too. Games are most welcome (i.e. Bocci, croquet, frisbee, etc.)

In light and beauty,

Dawn Mills

The Haven has benefitted hugely from Steve's support over the years - he spent time here as both a student and a highly gifted teacher. With the kind permission of Dawn, we welcome any donations in Steve's memory into our Learning Person to Person bursary fund. For more details please check out our web site or contact Rachel Davey (rachel[at]haven.ca, 1 877 247 9238 ext 235).

Satir's Legacy: 20 Years Later and Beyond - Cancelled
Sadly, this event has been cancelled by the Virginia Satir Global Network. Jean McLendon, President of the Virginia Satir Global Network on behalf of herself, John Banmen and Maria Gomori, has asked us to pass on this message:

'We regret that we have had to cancel [the workshop] and apologize for any inconvenience caused. Several things converged at the same time leading us to believe that February 09 is not a good time for an intensive two-week residential training program. The most pressing concern is the USA economy.

We will meet at Satir Global's major Conference in Denver this summer to see if we can see another way to offer Satir training. We are disappointed that we will not be doing the training this February.'

Fortunately for us, we can still offer the opportunity to experience the work of Virginia Satir in the Family Reconstruction course led by Maria Gomori at the end of August. For more information and online registration, visit our web site.

Join us on September 14 for The Haven's 25th Anniversary Open House celebration! Take care and be in touch soon.
