Welcome to the New Haven Foundation Board of Directors!
Saturday June 14 marked the first meeting of the new Directors of the Haven Foundation Board. There follows an announcement from the Members of the Haven Foundation, who selected the new Directors:
Dear Haven Foundation, Friends of Haven, Faculty, Staff & Participants,
The Members of Haven Foundation are pleased to announce the formation and appointment of a new Board of Directors of Haven Foundation. Coincidental with the appointment of the new board, we would also like to express our gratitude for the extraordinary service and commitment of the former Board of Directors. Please join us in welcoming the new incoming board as well as a round of applause for the outgoing board. The new Haven Foundation board consists of Connie Munro and Bob Matthews (co-chairs), Darrell Chambers, Wayne Dodge, Henry Goldbeck, Laurie Kelley, and Aubrey Muirhead. With gratitude and thanks for meritorious service, the outgoing board are Bill Chalmers (chair), Mark Gunderson, Rick Jackson, Linda Nicholls, David Raithby, Paul Robillard, Dave Tyler and Steve Davis. We would like to dedicate this announcement and provide best wishes to the incoming board in honour of Steve Davis who died of cancer on April 2, 2008. All of you will forever remain etched in our collective memory as dedicated servants of The Haven, its principles and mission as an institution of higher learning. We are all about relationships and connection.
Warm regards,
The Members
Randy Wong, Paul Robillard, John Gill & Dick Sass

The purpose of Haven Foundation is to ensure that The Haven remains a vital and sustainable entity for generations to come. To achieve this goal, we rely largely on the support and financial generosity of our donors. For further information on Haven Foundation see our web site. We greatly appreciate the dedication and heartfelt support of all of our Board Members and Directors, present and past.
An Update from John Shields, Executive Director of The Haven
|
Behind the scenes, The Haven is going through some dramatic changes. Despite our Canadian aversion to Constitutional change, The Haven is on the verge of major structural changes that will have long-term and significant impact. By the end of June, everything will have changed completely and nothing will have changed at all.
Throughout this year, The Haven's management team has been working to implement the Board's desire to amalgamate Haven Foundation and The Haven Institute into one structure. PD Seminars - the business that Ben and Jock created to be the container for their work, and Haven Foundation, which was created to ensure the continuation of The Haven into the future - will become one seamless body. Although many experts told us it could not be done, we have found a way to merge the once distinct entities.
|
One of the benefits of moving The Haven into the Foundation will be our ability to effectively fundraise. Federal charity rules prohibited the Foundation from using donations to directly support The Haven, a private business, because charities cannot donate to businesses. Once the transfer is completed, the Foundation will own all the assets and be able to use donations to improve the facilities, do research and development on new courses, and promote The Haven to potential participants.
On June 14, the Members of the Foundation held the Annual General Meeting of the Foundation. At that meeting, they elected a new Board of Directors which is entrusted with running the Foundation for the coming year. The Board is charged with supporting the management and giving them the tools to carry on The Haven's educational and personal development program. When the members and the new board met, they received the transfer from PD Seminars of all the property and facilities, The Haven Institute, and before the end of June they will become the employer of the staff and hold all contracts, including our contracts with Faculty and our international agreements.
Because The Haven Institute is going into the Foundation as a whole, nobody should experience the slightest change. There will, however, be change is in the makeup of the Board. I want to thank and acknowledge the foresight, vision and hard work of the outgoing team of leaders. A number of the Faculty have served on this board and deserve special thanks. Linda Nicholls, Rick Jackson, David Raithby, Steve Davis, Mark Gunderson, Dave Tyler and Paul Robillard have all served on this board. They, along with Chairperson Bill Chalmers, Laurie Kelley, and Connie Munro and me, worked through the difficult choices and hammered out the understandings that have enabled this new chapter in the life of The Haven to be written.
I am excited about the possibilities that open up to us and we are already at work to unfold new possibilities with the incoming board. On second thought, maybe you will notice the effect of these changes after all!
John Shields, Executive Director of the Foundation.

What's Hot in July!
Kids in the Spotlight (formerly Dance and Games for Kids) turns 21 in 2008, and offers fabulous opportunities for kids to collaborate in the creation of their own version of a musical. This year it is Hairspray which gets the Kids in the Spotlight treatment, and if you have never seen a performance, come along on the penultimate day of any of the courses. The show starts at 7pm in the Wong & McKeen Phoenix Auditorium. We are also happy to welcome back for the second year the Kids in the Spotlight Youth Leaders, who will be training in preparation for the courses at The Haven, thanks to the generous donors into the Youth Leadership Program.
There are also two opportunities to attend Come Alive, at the beginning and end of the month, with our ever popular Phase I: Self Awareness also on offer. As usual in Phase I, Linda Nicholls offers Shadow Play as part of the course, as well as an opportunity for others to join in the discovery that shadow work is soul work. We have a number of new and returning courses in July: Communication Fundamentals returns, which got off to a great start in January of this year; Horse Wisdom with Deborah Marshall; the popular Act Natural returns for those who are curious about acting and self-discovery; A Good Beginning, led by Judy Sellner, returns also, offering couples the opportunity to create a blossoming future.
And that's not all! As mentioned in last month's News Update, Dr Lee Pulos joins us for Adventures in Consciousness, and we are always delighted to welcome back Bud and Michele Baldwin to lead their ever popular course for couples, If You Really Loved Me.
So it's not just the weather that's hot at The Haven in July! To find out more or register online for any of these courses, click on the links above, or contact our Registrars (registrar[at]haven.ca, 1 877 247 9238 ext 234).
Satir's Legacy: 20 Years Later and Beyond
A once in a lifetime opportunity sponsored by the Virginia Satir Global Network (formerly known as Avanta), and Science and Behavior Books.
February 6-20th, 2009 at The Haven.
Throughout its history, The Haven's reputation as a centre of transformational learning has attracted innovative course leaders. Prominent amongst these was Virginia Satir, who presented two workshops a year at The Haven from 1982 to her death in 1988. Psychotherapy Networker recently described Satir as 'a giant amongst therapists' and as 'an evangelist for a vision of Family Therapy as the means of healing a wounded world'.
Maria Gomori has continued Virginia Satir's teaching at The Haven, and there has always been a strong interconnection between The Haven and Satir's work. It is thanks to this continuing close connection that we have the opportunity to host 'Satir's Legacy: 20 Years Later and Beyond' in February 2009.
|
This two-week intensive training experience will be led by three master trainers, John Banmen, Maria Gomori and Jean McLendon, and is based on the methods and teachings of The Satir Growth Model. The training is designed to cultivate knowledge for both the beginner and advanced practitioner.
We are delighted to host what promises to be an amazing event. In order to guarantee a place, it is important to register as soon as possible. The earlybird tuition fee of $1200 for the whole training program is only available until September 30, 2008, so don't delay!
There is much more information on the training and the trainers, as well as online registration on our web site. For further information on registration and accommodation, please contact Louise Amuir (louise[at]haven.ca or call 1 877 247 9238, extension 222).
