After Come Alive — Integrating the Learning
Our renowned Come Alive course has been offered at The Haven for the past 25 years, and continues to attract participants in ever larger numbers. Over the years it has offered thousands of people the opportunity to experience what it means to be fully alive, and to take that experience back out into the world. We want to support participants to integrate the tools that they have learned in the Come Alive (or any of our other courses) into daily life.
To this end we offer a number of free resources and ongoing support. At the end of a Come Alive, each participant receives a printed set of The Haven models, which also includes information on breathing and a step by step guide to the Amazing Joints and Glands Moving Meditation. All of this material is also available for anyone to download from a special section of the Shen online. This section is intended for people who have just completed a Come Alive, and will be useful to anyone who has done a course at The Haven. It contains useful tips on how to integrate the learning from a Come Alive, as well as up to date information on our Staying Alive groups in different locations in Canada and the USA. Check out the latest Shen for all of this information.
We also love to hear from participants who create their own ways of integrating their experience, so we were delighted to receive this poem from Janice Henshaw, who attended a Come Alive in April this year. Janice says: 'This poem was written so that I would always remember my week at the Haven - an incredibly difficult and wonderful birthday present - and in so doing, to incorporate some of the Haven tools from the Come Alive course. It is dedicated to the April 20-25 "Havenites" - my teachers and friends.'

The Haven on Gabriola - "Come Alive"
|
We walk along our own paths now
Feeling Alive - and really changed.
Breathing, Becoming Aware,
Acknowledging and Accepting,
Taking action, appreciating,
But still - missing our circle.
Some of us are forgetting,
Sinking day by day
Into the old familiar habits.
Rebuilding the layers of
Shields and masks
To hold and hide behind.
But in fact, it is too late.
Layers of judgment fell away,
Age, sex, personality, and history.
Everyone was touched,
By noses, knees, songs, and loving hands,
By laughter, stories, and by tears.
Now, or in the future,
As you walk along,
Think of us, the April Havenites
Our shared stories,
The warm feeling of connection,
Sense of trust - and self compassion.
Wherever you go,
You are not alone!
Whatever path you take
Feel us walking along beside you,
Grounded, and using the models
Ready to help you - at any time.
|
Some days you will cry
In longing, and in pain,
And not see the path around
That elephant in front of you.
But there is a way!
And you will learn by doing.
Acknowledge and honour
Each aspect of yourself.
Breathe to grow and change,
Be strong when you feel despair,
Have the courage to face your fears,
Be joyful when you ride on the peaks.
Hold the Haven memories
Warm inside your heart,
Polish them with your touch,
And feel them resonate.
Turn them gently so they catch the light.
Take care of them with love.
Breathe…
And believe you can do it,
Breathe…
Remember how strong you are
Breathe…
And know you are not alone!

Thank you Janice for this beautiful gift to The Haven and to others who have recently completed a Come Alive. For more information and online registration for Come Alive, see our web site.
Satir's Legacy: 20 Years Later and Beyond
A once in a lifetime opportunity sponsored by the Virginia Satir Global Network (formerly known as Avanta), and Science and Behavior Books.
February 6-20th, 2009 at The Haven.
Throughout its history, The Haven's reputation as a centre of transformational learning has attracted innovative course leaders. Prominent amongst these was Virginia Satir, who presented two workshops a year at The Haven from 1982 to her death in 1988. Psychotherapy Networker recently described Satir as 'a giant amongst therapists' and as 'an evangelist for a vision of Family Therapy as the means of healing a wounded world'.
Maria Gomori has continued Virginia Satir's teaching at The Haven, and there has always been a strong interconnection between The Haven and Satir's work. It is thanks to this continuing close connection that we have the opportunity to host 'Satir's Legacy: 20 Years Later and Beyond' in February 2009.
|
This two-week intensive training experience will be led by three master trainers, John Banmen, Maria Gomori and Jean McLendon, and is based on the methods and teachings of The Satir Growth Model. The training is designed to cultivate knowledge for both the beginner and advanced practitioner.
We are delighted to host what promises to be an amazing event. In order to guarantee a place, it is important to register as soon as possible. The earlybird tuition fee of $1200 for the whole training program is only available until September 30, 2008, so don't delay!
There is much more information on the training and the trainers, as well as online registration on our web site. For further information on registration and accommodation, please contact Louise Amuir (louise[at]haven.ca or call 1 877 247 9238, extension 222).

What's New and Returning for June
The Power of Direct Mirroring
Cathy McNally and Wendy Huntington
June 6-9, 2008
|
It's in Joann Peterson's honour that we bring back one of the courses that she was well known for here at The Haven. For many years people had the opportunity to learn with Joann the process of mirroring and how it impacts our lives, and now we are delighted to have two dear friends of Joann's, Cathy McNally and Wendy Huntington, bring the learning alive again.
The myth of the mirror impacts our relationship with our body and our current relationships with partners, children, friends, bosses, employees and co-workers.
Early in life, we adopted messages (often inferred) from others as the 'truth' about ourselves and about our bodies. We are unaware that these reflections were often distortions of flawed mirroring. If these 'truths' remain unexamined, we live our life in reaction to others.
|
This course provides an opportunity to explore and update mirrored messages and learn about direct, honest, personal mirroring and use this style of feedback as a practice ground for nurturing honest, intimate relationships.
The Spring edition of the Shen re-ran a wonderful article written by Joann Peterson on the subject of mirroring - read it here.

This course is approved for Continuing Education Credit hours by the Canadian Counselling Association.

Journey to Self and Satir Foundations
June 13-16, 2008 (Satir Foundations); June 16-22, 2008 (Journey to Self)
You don't have to wait until Satir's Legacy in 2009 to do a course with Maria Gomori. Maria has been offering her Journey to Self I and II courses at The Haven for many years - and many of us have had the privilege of experiencing Maria's passion for her work.
This year there is a slight change to these courses. Instead of Journey to Self I and II, Maria will be leading Journey to Self in June and a course focused on Family Reconstruction in August. Maria will also be co-leading Transitions with Linda Nicholls from June 22 to 28.
Cathy McNally will be offering Satir Foundations immediately prior to both courses as an introduction to the underlying processes of the Satir model. Satir Foundations is a prerequisite for Journey to Self and Family Reconstruction for those who have not had previous experience with Satir work.
Journey to Self, Satir Foundations and Transitions are all approved for Continuing Education Credit hours by the Canadian Counselling Association.
For more information and online registration for these courses see our web site.
The Singing Soul: Improvisational A Cappella
David Hatfield
June 19 - 22, 2008
|
Humming a tune while washing the dishes ... tapping out a rhythm on the steering wheel ... wanting to hear a certain kind of song to suit our mood ... emotional surges and absent minded creative moments. What happens when a space is made for conscious improvisation, grounded in the body and carried by the voice? Magic! The Singing Soul is a musical journey of spontaneous self-expression and creative collaboration with others. We are moved by the preciousness of our own music, our own stories, perhaps for the first time. Join in and raise your voice in joyous a cappella grooves of our own making. Explore both conventional and non-conventional uses of the human voice in the co-creation of authentic music of the moment. WE are the instruments in a musical journey of spontaneous self-expression and collaboration with others. By turns edgy, hilarious, challenging, and deeply moving, each moment is an original composition that is unrehearsed, precious, and irreplaceable.
|
|
The Singing Soul holds two themes of focus: One is the journey of the improviser, independently and as collaborator: surrendering to muse, unleashing, connecting with truth, staying present to self and others, creating and recognizing opportunity, role clarity, moving fear into freedom. The other is skill building as vocal architects of music: building melody, harmony and bass lines, vocal percussion, creating counterpoint, soloing, utilizing lyrics - spontaneous and composed, learning and creating genres, and building ensemble skills.

For those of you interested in discovering more about Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP), we have an introductory course in June, as well as continuing training for the Year 1 students. Lee Pulos and Adventures in Consciousness
July 4-6, 2008
|
Moving into early July, we look forward to welcoming Dr Lee Pulos to lead Adventures in Consciousness. Lee has been a long time member of The Haven faculty and is always at the leading edge. Spending time with Lee is one of life's treats. His dynamic and spontaneous style makes room for unexpected and unforgettable learning experiences. His unique ideas and approaches have resulted in two books, Miracles and Other Realities and Beyond Hypnosis, clinical psychology work with Olympic athletes and Team Canada, a chain of very successful restaurants, and collaborations with many of today's great minds.
Adventures in Consciousness is an exciting and provocative experiential course, in which participants will lean self-hypnosis as the basic tool to explore different octaves of consciousness. Specific techniques will be taught to identify and change limiting beliefs which can sabotage personal growth, prosperity, relationships and healing.
