Springtime at The Haven

Spring has arrived at The Haven and our gardens are looking spectacular. The growth energy of Spring is also to be found in our courses, which are full to bursting. Having just said farewell to our Phase II group of 30 plus participants, we have time to take a breath before welcoming large numbers to Effective Boundaries, Come Alive, and Anger Boundaries and Safety, as well as those returning for the second part of their first year of IBP training. April and May are also busy times for our group bookings, with meetings, retreats, festivals, celebrations and more. Our friends from Lulu Performing Arts, who often use the Wong & McKeen Phoenix Auditorium as a venue, are hosting a Screamathon in the Auditorium at 7pm on May 11 as a fundraiser for The Haven, and we very much appreciate their support. If you are on the island, and want to vent, feel free to come along! For more details contact Louise Amuir (louise[at]haven.ca or 1 877 247 9238 ext. 222).
The Haven is flourishing this Spring - if you want to check out the 'buzz', see our upcoming courses below.
Steve Davis
Steve Davis, a director of the Haven Foundation Board, a faculty member and a long-time friend and supporter of The Haven, passed away at the beginning of April. Steve was greatly loved and will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to come in contact with him. Our thoughts are with Dawn and his family and friends. Rick Jackson, a fellow Board director and one of Steve's many friends, shares his thoughts with us.
Steve Davis and the Light of Being
On April 2, 2008 our dear friend Steve Davis passed away in a Texas hospital. He had been in the USA, accompanied by his life partner Dawn, to obtain treatment for the malignant tumour on his liver which ultimately claimed his life.
At the Cold Mountain Institute Ben and Jock introduced Steve to Robert Diltz, one of the founders of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and the rest, as they say, is history. With many years as a Professor of Psychology and with a thriving family counselling practice under his belt, Steve went on to become an immensely popular NLP trainer around the world. Through his successful training companies, Steve conducted his 'NLP with Heart' at The Haven Institute and in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and across Canada. In addition to being a long time faculty member at The Haven, Steve served as a Director of the Haven Foundation.
In 2003 Steve and Dawn moved from their Winnipeg home to West Vancouver to help establish what eventually became Mirus Point Facilitators Inc. From then on Steve, together with his training partner Lynn Sumida, trained facilitators in a highly innovative process (which includes NLP and other approaches) that assists people to make rapid and major shifts in their consciousness and in their lives.
In addition to his tremendous gifts as a practitioner and teacher, Steve brought the gift of his warm and loving Light with him, regardless of the circumstances. For all of us knew and loved this gentle soul, his Light of Being will remain in our hearts.
When The Haven learns of arrangements (currently being considered) for a memorial to honour Steve's life, we will be sure to pass along the details. Meanwhile, we join Steve's friends from around the world in expressing our condolences to his beloved Dawn and his family.
This beautiful poem was written in Steve's memory by Peter Joyes:
|
I see your face in my heart,
I hear the sound of your voice,
I feel your presence here,
With me now,
With me now.
|
With every breath that I take
With every beat of my heart,
You are here with me now,
Shining light,
Shining light.
|
The Haven has benefitted hugely from Steve's support over the years - he spent time here as both a student and a highly gifted teacher. With the kind permission of Dawn, we welcome any donations in Steve's memory into our Learning Person to Person bursary fund. For more details please check out our web site or contact Rachel Davey (programs[at]haven.ca, 1 877 247 9238 ext 235).

Coaching: Engaging Relationships
Cathy Wilder and Jennifer Hilton
"At The Haven, we recognize that being in intentional relationship contributes powerfully to our own life and growth and exploration of our human potential.
I know that after being at The Haven a few times, I started to shift things in my life in a way that was unfamiliar; I didn't really set out to do something in particular, I simply had a new sense of being myself that lead me to making different choices. I attribute this to the relational experience and depth of 'being with' others in my learning. This experience was instrumental for me in my choice to want to be with others as they had been with me and set me both on my career in coaching and the interning path at The Haven. Jennifer
Coaching has been an increasing trend for years and is now impacting many people both personally and professionally. Coaching at The Haven is about creating a space for others in which they do their work and learning. It's about holding a person capable and 'being with' them from a place of respect, curiosity and heart.
To the extent our life and work involves teaching, interning, leading, managing, helping, parenting, enrolling, engaging, or simply being in a primary relationship - coaching conversations can deepen contact, create opportunities and generate positive outcomes for both self and other.
At The Haven, one of the many things I learned was the importance of knowing my own defenses and the limitations they impose on building and having successful relationships. Working with clients I have had experiences of coming up against my defenses and in the moment making a conscious decision to not go there and own any part that is mine in support of the clients' growth and learning - and open communication. Each time I have done this I know it has benefited the client and has led to deeper connections and unpredictable positive outcomes. Cathy
Coaching: Engaging Relationships is an exploration in joining the ideas, experiences and learning at The Haven with the tools of a focused conversation to equip us to engage and support others. Come and join us for an engaging coaching experience and learn how to 'turn up the volume' of being wholly and intentionally present with others."
For more information and online registration for Coaching, see our web site. There is still time to register at the Earlybird price, which will continue until Thursday 24 April.
Why 'Intuitive Healing'?
Phil Winkelmans
"At sixty years old I had accomplished most of my life's goals, with one exception. I suffered from depression and in spite of many years of therapy and different spiritual and metaphysical practices my depression persisted.
I had gone to University at age fifty-four and eventually obtained three degrees, including a PhD, yet most of this time and even after as a therapist my depression stayed with me.
Finally in '93 due to some 'intuitive' and 'chance coincidences' I went on a journey that ended with a discovery that changed my life forever. I experienced for the first time a breath of freedom and excitement I hadn't felt in years. This has been the inspiration behind the work I do today.
Since then I've created a powerful Intuitive Healing Workshop along with my exclusive Tools For The Soul® System, which offers tools and skills that transform participants in ways I couldn't previously have imagined."
Philip Winkelmans PhD conducts his Intuitive Healing workshops at The Haven and has written the internationally acclaimed book The Art of Purposeful Being; Your Destiny Project. For more information and online registration for Intuitive Healing, see our web site.
The Haven and Royal Roads University: The Confluence of Continuous Learning
The Haven is always on the lookout for partnerships of mutual benefit; we are very fortunate to enjoy just such a relationship with Hilary Leighton at Royal Roads. Here Hilary talks about her connection with The Haven, and our ongoing and very fruitful collaboration.
"Like many folks who have come through The Haven's doors, my re-entry into education and continued personal development was catalyzed by a severe fall - falling off the carefully constructed perch of self, preceded by a breaking open of my heart and the releasing of my deeply rooted romantic notions of love. And, much less gracefully I might add, breaking both my arms and cracking open my skull in a skating accident at about the same time. Apparently, there are no accidents and this forced time of introspection began a lifelong journey for me of self care coupled with a scholarly pursuit of embodied learning!
My first Haven-type workshop experience in Prince George, in one of David Raithby's short satellite sessions, began with the enticement of a public talk and, subsequently a weekend. I was completely undone by the concepts presented at the lecture. If this was a sampler for what was to come, I was in, regardless of my former plans or lack of cashflow at the time. In the ensuing years, I loyally attended no fewer than 14 of David's northern sessions and about six years ago decided it was time to go to the source - The Haven - to see what the fuss was about.
As an educator by profession, I am naturally curious, a seeker of diverse ways of knowing and I really love to learn. I have found that consistently the models and modalities of Haven curriculum and instruction provide a substantial and rich experience that by design includes time for rendering, reflection and transformation (and my personal excavation of learning continues long after my time there ends). Moreover, I learn not only from skilled practitioners and facilitators, but also from other learners, the staff, and not least from the grounds, gardens, ocean and tides, the place itself ... I have often wondered, then why did it take me almost a year to return after my first fertile experience?
In conversation, some of the facilitators and staff and I drew on these conclusions. Naturally there may be: fear and anxiety (what was that that just happened?); shift in finances and geography; a general life busy-ness; diversions and addictions; a difficulty in reincorporating the learnings into the everyday; all of the entertainments in life that serve to snag our attention in the meantime. So how to complement what folks learn here who may not have an immediate chance to come back and who want to stay connected and/or how to introduce friends and families without the significant time or financial commitment at first? The Prince George crew and David had it right. How about talks and short workshops in other locations?
This past year, Rachel (Davey, The Haven's Director of Programs) and I decided to partner to bring sampler evening talks and selected short version workshops in the Haven style to a more public venue - to Royal Roads University in fact, where I am the Director of Continuing Studies (never any accidents!). Our intention was that this would provide a place for 'toe-dipping' into the waters of personal development for Haven newcomers in a more condensed form and bring an affordable refresher for returning participants. Further, it was our hope that some of the excellent Haven learning models could be presented in a more accessible format (applicable and appealing to areas previously disparate from the personal development realm), for business and commerce, industry, private and public sector training and professional development.
Before we begin planning for next, we wanted to remind you of what is still to come. On May 10-11, David Raithby and Sandey McCartney will present a weekend workshop called Expanding Your Life: How to Move from Pressure to Passion. To register please call RRU (250 391 2600 ext. 4801 or Toll Free 1-866-890-0220), register online on the Royal Roads web site or email us at continuingstudies[at]royalroads.ca.
And please watch for our new calendar/website, out in late summer. It is good to know that here, in Victoria's own backyard, there is a place to renew and refresh and bring those you care about to connect with The Haven, in a castle by the sea (hey! some romantic notions are healthy, right?). Hope to see you here." Hilary Leighton.
The Haven's Certificate and Diplomas - new syllabus information
Intern training has been an integral part of The Haven for many years, attracting people from different walks of life and from all over the world. More than seventy people have graduated through our programs and we currently have 50 plus on the intern path. The skills interns learn at The Haven are hard to find anywhere else.
We have been working on a new structure for the Certificate and Diploma courses. The intention is to retain all the essential elements that make the programs unique, and enable our students to learn in a more flexible way.
The new syllabus will come into effect on July 1 2008. All new students enrolled after that date will come under the new syllabus. Full information on the new syllabus is now on our web site. For further information, please contact Gwen Ewan, The Haven's Director of Education, by email on gwen[at]haven.ca

MUSIC IMPLIED - CD cover designs for music you'd love to hear
Our faculty members are nothing if not multi-talented! Ellery Littleton, who has led courses focusing on writing and creativity (and on Zen in a new course upcoming in November) at The Haven for many years, is also an amazing photographer and artist. He has been working with graphic artist Mark Blaney in the creation of cover designs for imaginary CDs.
'The images on the covers are fully realized designs for CD's from entirely fictional bands and musicians,' Ellery says. 'The designs represent music we'd love to hear, from the finest musicians we can imagine. A fantasy trip, to be sure.'
These designs will be featured in an upcoming show called MUSIC IMPLIED at the LYNDIA TERRE GALLERY, 1811 Northwest Bay Road, Nanoose Bay (just south of Parksville) on June 27-29 and July 5 & 12 2008. Gallery hours are 1-5 pm every day. There will be a Reception on Saturday June 28 from1:30-3:30 pm (including a talk by artists and live music). For further information call (250)468 9010.
There is always something up at The Haven, to stay informed visit our website www.haven.ca email us at info@haven.ca or call us at 250-247-9211 and toll-free 1-877 247-9238.
