Groups at The Haven
It's the time of year when we welcome new and returning groups to The Haven for conferences, meetings, planning sessions or retreats. The Haven is the perfect setting for groups looking to focus on important issues, away from the office environment and free from the distractions of a city (but still only 20 minutes from Nanaimo).
Louise Amuir (below) is our Group Bookings Coordinator, and here she tells us more about the kinds of groups we host. If you are thinking of bringing a group to The Haven, check out our web site, call Louise on 1 877 247 9238 extension 222, or email louise(at)haven.ca
Group bookings at The Haven are an interesting array of flavours. January and February every year are filled with choral and string quartet retreats. Throughout the year, artists Dan Cormier and Tracy Holmes teach people how to Build Better Beads. The Lulu Performing Arts Society produces about six shows a year, bringing internationally recognized new music performers to Gabriola. The Wong and McKeen Phoenix Auditorium is the main venue for the Poetry Gabriola Festival in November each year. There was also an Alphabet Soup poetry reading in the hot tub last year, featuring David Bateman in a leopard print bathing suit! We enjoy the creative energy that the artistic groups bring here, and it seems a good fit - a lot of what happens in courses at The Haven is related to creativity.
We have hosted conferences of academics and administrators and taken care of the food and drink and shelter while they follow their curiosity. We have been host to a number of Inter Tribal Health Authority retreats for people working with survivors of residential school abuse and for Health Workers across Vancouver Island. The Snuneymuxw band from Nanaimo has held Youth Conferences here. We love that these groups are doing the same sort of transformative work as people are doing in our Institute courses and it is a great privilege to host or partner with them.
We have hosted board meetings and retreats for environmental groups, foundations involved in funding social change and agencies working with drug and alcohol prevention. We like being able to support change in the world by offering our space, our nourishing food and warm welcome.
We receive many emails and calls about peoples' experiences as part of a visiting group to The Haven, such as:
Thank you for the quality service you provided to our Restitution Facilitator group.
We really enjoyed our stay at The Haven - the room was lovely, the meals delicious and the environment so peaceful and beautiful. The room for the yoga workshop was a perfect combination of cave-like inwardness and sunny windowed outwardness!
...how wonderful a job you and your staff at The Haven do taking care of all of our needs. The Haven is just right for our group and gets very high marks on the delegates' closing evaluations. You and your team are just sensational! - The Administrators' Academy
Thanks for all your help. I have worked with many retreat centers and you were the most efficient and helpful person I have dealt with in a while!!! Keep up the good work. - Regression Therapy
We LOVE The Haven. - Lynch Taylor Wedding
People come to The Haven and find a place where they can be themselves. If you are part of a group that would benefit from connecting with each other, we'd love to have you do it here.

Phase I: Self-Awareness - July 2008
Unfortunately Susa Holt will not be available to lead Phase I in July this year. We are sad that Susa can't be with us, and excited to announce that Susan Clarke and Carole Ames will be leading Phase I - Gwen Ewan graciously stepped aside to enable Susan and Carole to lead together.
It promises to be an exceptional experience for the participants. Here Susan and Carole speak of their own experiences of Phase I, and why they wanted to lead this very special course.
'Phase I is one of my favorite programs because it's an amazing opportunity to not just have an AHA experience but to put that AHA moment into a bigger context of day-to-day life. Phase I is 26 days so lots of time to be up, down, learning, discovering, making mistakes, recovering, digesting while practicing and building relationships that translate into a new way of living life fully, well beyond the Phase experience itself!
Leading allows me to partner with folks on their incredible journey and be part of transformation that truly takes place from within each unique individual as together we create a space that nurtures curiosity, creativity and growth!! I am thrilled to be partnering with Carole Ames to lead the summer 2008 Phase I!!' (Susan Clarke)

'Last Fall I was in the middle of assisting a Come Alive in Shenzhen China, with little spare time, a mischievous iPod, and erratic Internet connection (a long story in itself), when I learned that there was an opening to co-lead Phase I in July 2008. All else went background as I leapt to the keyboard to type my expression of interest, hit SEND, and then waited to see if the message would be delivered. It was. And I exhaled.
Okay, that was a bit dramatic. However it very accurately reflects my love of Phase I. This course is a fantastic opportunity to settle in together for 26 days of tears, joy, laughter, irritation, questioning, intrigue and challenge. An added bonus for me is to be co-leading with Susan Clarke, whom I have known since my first introduction to Phase I in 1992.' (Carole Ames) |

New Diplomas and Certificate
On July 1 2008 we will be launching two new Diplomas (the Diploma in Haven Group Facilitation and The Diploma in Haven Counselling Skills) and the Certificate in Haven Counselling Skills. These new intern training programs will replace the Diploma and Certificate in Counselling, although current interns will have the option to complete the old syllabus, or switch to the new one.
Although the programs are changing, the essential elements remain the same. Students will continue to start as participants, gradually introducing themselves to interning and taking on different leadership roles as their experience grows. The names of the programs have changed, in order to better reflect the content of the course. There are also fewer prerequisites and 'required' courses, and more opportunity for interns to tailor the program to their individual needs.
There will be more information on the new certificates and diplomas in News Updates over the next few months, so watch this space, and check out the information on our web site as it is updated.

The Haven Models
'Where can I find a copy of the models from the Come Alive?' is a frequent question in participant surveys. We are delighted that now we can give a quick and easy answer. Together with The Haven's faculty, we have produced a simple summary document, which contains diagrams and descriptions of the Communication, Resonance and Selves Models, as well as guidance on breathing. This document is now given out at the end of every Come Alive - and it is also available from the Shen Online for you to download and print (for the best results use a colour printer).
These models are intended as summaries, tasters or reminders, not a replacement for the unique experience of a Come Alive! We hope that you find them useful.
There is a Place online
At the end of every Come Alive it has also become a tradition to give out copies of 'There is a Place' - we know (because you tell us) that this has been a very valuable tool in trying to explain to others what The Haven is about. We want to continue supporting you in your efforts to do this - we are delighted that so many of our participants come for the first time as a result of personal or professional recommendations.
Now you no longer need a copy of the DVD to be able to access this stunning 12 minute video about The Haven. You can download it from our web site or check it out on YouTube. We are able to do this, and continue to give out the DVDs, thanks to the generosity of Andrew Best - thank you Andrew!
Just finished a Come Alive?
We know that the transition from Come Alive back into your daily life can sometimes be a challenging one. For this reason, there is a special section of the Shen Online which contains pointers to help you manage the transition, as well as lots of information about Staying Alive groups in your area.
Even if your Come Alive was 15 years ago, you might want to check out some of the useful information provided in this section of the Shen! It is important to us that we do what we can to support you in integrating your learnings from The Haven into your life.
New Food Service Area
In the two weeks before Christmas, The Haven's Maintenance department renovated the food service area. Our intention was to be able to shorten line-ups and to help you move through the buffet more efficiently.
Over the years, many people suggested having the salad bar accessible from two sides, and that's exactly what we've done. Our big test at New Year's Eve and the Ben and Jock Honouring on New Year's Day was pretty conclusive - 150 people went through for each of those meals with no line-up out into the bar area.
For the construction crew, it was a bit of old times. Bill, Xanon, John Fleury, Louise, and Ron Ruckman worked together again, this time with the addition of Bruce, Brad and Rob. Simon Brown (Alan Brown's son) did the cabinetry which he very kindly fit in around other jobs. The final bits arrived on Valentine's Day, appropriate perhaps for the food service area since it's one of the many places at Haven where you can feel the love!
Heartfelt thanks to our donors!
Your donations are making a difference in the world. Since its inception in 2004, our financial aid program has made it possible for more than 200 adults and children to attend a course at The Haven, which they otherwise would not have been able to afford. All of the financial aid, more than $200,000, came from donations from generous individuals who make it possible for others to experience what The Haven has to offer.
Thank you to everyone who made a donation in 2007. This year, our donor wall is online on our web site - this space is our way of appreciating and acknowledging the generosity of our donors. Your contributions keep The Haven spirit alive. Thank you.
You can find out more about donating to the Haven Foundation on our web site, or by contacting Rachel Davey by phone at 1-877-247-9238, ext 235 or by email at development(at)haven.ca

Just Briefly...
Farewell and Welcome
We are sorry to say goodbye to Jennifer Hilton, who did some wonderful work for us on marketing and events at The Haven. We are, however, delighted that she got her 'dream job' in Vancouver, and wish her all the best for the future. We can console ourselves with the fact that she has not gone forever - she co-leads Coaching: Engaging Relationships with Cathy Wilder in May and October this year, as well as continuing her studies for her Diploma in Counselling.
When you call the Registrars, you may be hearing a new voice. Tina Boehm has recently joined us as Registration Assistant, working with Morag and Rose. Tina brings with her a wealth of experience as well as great enthusiasm for the work that we do here at The Haven. Welcome Tina!
Check out our listing on happyfrog.ca - you can even give our entry a rating. Happyfrog.ca is BC's most comprehensive directory of green businesses and sustainability-minded organizations, and we are delighted to be a part of it. |
