The Haven Course Catalogue 2008
Check it
out … the 2008 course catalogue is here - in print and online.
This 25th anniversary year catalogue has everything - a beautiful
cover, bright and very user-friendly layout, with information, news,
and views. It's also printed on 100% recycled paper, thereby saving 40
trees and reducing our total energy use by 44%.
We have mailed out over 6,000 copies in the last two weeks. If you have
not got yours yet or you would like extra copies, please email us at
info(at)haven.ca, use our online
catalogue request form or call on 1 877 247 9238. 2007 saw
increasing numbers of people attending our courses and our intention is
that the 2008 catalogue will help continue this trend. We want this
catalogue to reach as many people who have never been to The Haven as
possible, so please ask for extra copies for your place of work or to
share with friends and family. Also, if you have ideas about places to
display or send the catalogue, please email the details to Rachel Davey
at programs(at)haven.ca.
Shen - now Online
The Shen has played an important role in The Haven's history - it has
been the place to discuss issues, introduce new ideas and keep up to
date with what's happening at The Haven. The Online Shen will continue
this tradition. By using a web-based format, we are able to reach a
wider audience and at the same time reduce the financial and
environmental costs of a printed publication. A further advantage of
the online format is that we can include audio and video files,
pictures and the interactivity that a web page allows.
For a taste of good things to come in the Online Shen see our
'trailer' edition here.
You can listen to The Haven's founders, Ben Wong and Jock McKeen,
talking about how they first met and how they began to work together
with groups; and read an article by Gwen Ewan on how groups have
remained central in The Haven's work. There is also a poem by Ellery
Littleton that suggests the essence of what many people discover in
courses here.
The first full online issue of Shen will appear mid-January 2008 and
will focus on The Haven's 25th anniversary.
Take a look and let us know what you think. Contact Toby Macklin, the
Shen Editor at sheneditor(at)haven.ca

The 'Pay
It Forward' Blog for Ben & Jock
We know that many of you may not be able to join us on January 1, so we
have created a simple-to-use blog so that those who cannot be with us
can still participate.
We are inviting you to record on the blog the impact that Ben and Jock,
through their work at The Haven, have had on your life. We know that
many people have come to The Haven and made significant shifts, which
in turn have led to radical life changes. We also know that people have
'paid it forward' by referring friends and family to The Haven. We
invite you to share your stories with us, and with Ben and Jock, and in
this way acknowledge their work in the world, and how different our
lives are, and the lives of those close to us, for having met them.
The blog is open to all, and easy to access. If you want to post
something to this blog, simply send an email to haven.ben.jock@blogger.com
and your email will be automatically posted. Please note that the whole
of your email will be posted, so remove any signatures, contact details
etc. before sending the email, and include your name.

Faith and Spirituality
In January and February 2008 we will be offering two courses, one
established and one brand new, focusing on issues of Faith and
Spirituality. Join us for one or both for a wonderful way to deepen
into the New Year.
Bleep of Faith - Courage in Chaos (Jan 1-4)
with Carole Ames and Bill Leuze
A conversation with Carole & Bill
BILL: For me, faith began in spirituality as a connection
to the Divine. At The Haven I experienced faith as a connection with
the universe through resonance with others. Both of these experiences
of faith felt the same to me. This is why I like the findings of
quantum physics - that everything is connected and that the Divine is
found in everything.
When things are normal and structured I seemingly don't need faith. But
it takes courage for me to jump out of the normal structure and into
chaos where there are unlimited possibilities. Once in the chaos, faith
is like the string I follow towards the possibilities.
Getting into a relationship with Carole was a leap of faith.
CAROLE: Very funny! Actually I agree - we were both
leaping.
My faith stirred as a child when I sang in the church choir. Although I
didn't know what to make of God or religion, I sometimes felt a
peaceful aliveness which seemed to expand beyond me. Today I would use
words like resonance and attunement. My experience was one of embracing
rather than my more typical resistance. My fear and anxiety shifted to
courage and confidence.
Without faith I do not rise to a challenge and I certainly don't
embrace it - I tend to collapse, or avoid, or rush through. My life is
so much richer when I remember faith, and summon my courage to act from
that place.
We invite you to join us for more explorations January 1. See the course

Practical Spirituality: A Radical Path to
Well-being (Feb 28 - Mar 2) with Heather Ferris
Wellness
workshops and practices have been available for many years
now. Are you well? Are you happy? Could the distress of the planet be
symptomatic of our individual states of being? It is time for a radical
intervention. Practical spirituality embraces the ethics of all ancient
traditions, recognizing our commonality and interdependence. It is a
way of life with a commitment to living each moment in an ethical way
without dogma, guilt or shame.
This workshop will:
- help you develop, or make practical, a daily
spiritual practice (based on your own beliefs) as an antidote to
suffering.
- identify and suggest methods to weaken the roots of
suffering, attachment(desire and addiction), aversion (wanting things
to be other than they are), self-centredness, unconsciousness
(unawareness of our actions and how they impact the earth, our lives
and the lives of others).
- teach healing exercises to reduce trauma and fear.
- provide a supportive community in which to practice
living in an authentic and ethical way.
|
We will do this through exercises/practices and discussions that
stretch our minds and support one another to change our habits, laugh
more, sleep better and appreciate being alive at this time.
We are also delighted to welcome Heather Ferris to our faculty. Heather
is a writer, trainer and clinical counsellor using energy psychology,
mindfulness and meditation in her practice. She has led groups
involving physical, emotional and spiritual well-being for twenty-five
years in North America, Australia and Southern Africa. She believes in
the capacity of individuals to risk being themselves, to speak and act
for what they hold dear and to recognise their sacredness and
connectedness to all life. Her own spiritual path has formed through
the paranormal healing gifts of her father, death of a husband at 26,
anti-apartheid activism, Buddhist teachings, and supporting
AIDS-affected people in Southern Africa.

Faculty Focus -
Lyle Povah
Lyle is a
percussionist/singer/guitarist, educator and children's
entertainer with a special interest in African drumming and we are
fortunate to have him as a member of The Haven faculty. In November he
joined us as a participant in a Come Alive. Here, in his own words,
Lyle talks about that experience and his work with drums.
"Rarely in my career as a facilitator/musician do I get to be both a
leader
and a participant at the same centre. The Haven recently provided that
very
opportunity.
I lead a Haven course called Drum Talk (Mar. 21-24 and Aug. 22-25),
an Internal Dialogue with the Self, which in addition to exploring many
aspects of rhythm with the African drum, allows us to delve into
personal issues related to community, health and spirituality.
Over the years, I've become so accustomed to leading programs that to
be a
participant in the November 10-15 Come Alive, expertly led by Wayne
Dodge and Gwen Ewan, was at once exciting and unsettling. Some of my
initial
internal dialogue about being new on the faculty and therefore having
to
'keep it together' quickly fell away when I realized that the work
focuses
on one's honesty and connection to self and others. Many times as we
sat in a
circle, either sharing personally or witnessing others process, I
thought of
how the safe container created for all of us mirrors the original
intention
of a drum circle ... that it is inclusive, able to contain all parts of
who we
are, the light and the dark.
Now weeks later, the integration process still continues. The Come
Alive
gifts were many, not the least of which is the simple, yet not so easy
awareness of ... ready, do it with me! TAKE A BREATH!"

Two more Dip C
Graduates!
On the
weekend of Nov 30th, a group of 36 interns gathered at The Haven
for a training workshop - it was wonderful to have so many of our
interns together, despite the wintry weather. Our diploma program, and
the interns who follow the path, are one of the ways in which The Haven
is unique. We are very proud of our interns, past, present and future.
It was an extra special weekend for two of the Senior Interns on the
course, Gisela Sartori and Bob Matthews. Many faculty
who were on property came together with interns and Haven staff to
celebrate their graduation from The Haven's Diploma in Counselling
program. Our congratulations go to Bob and Gisela, and we appreciate
the time, energy and passion they have put into gaining their Diplomas.
We are privileged to have them join our other graduates, who now number
more than 70.
To find out more about our training programs, see the training
section of our website

Just Briefly
Many of you who have enjoyed the DVD There is a Place have enjoyed the
special talents of Andrew Best, who generously donated his work on this
project so that we are able to give out the DVD at the end of every

Box, which has at its heart the work of Joann Peterson and her course,
Anger, Boundaries & Safety. You can now see parts of The Anger
Toolbox on YouTube. Check out the clips and join in the
discussions.
The Anger Toolbox is available from The Haven Store.
