The Haven News Update, Vol 6, Issue 11
November,2007

Learning at The Haven
Learning at The Haven We are having a very busy November, with a number of courses filled to capacity. It's a bumper News Update too, with information on new and returning courses, our honouring of The Haven founders Ben and Jock, DipC graduations and even some holiday gift suggestions!

As we mentioned in last month's News Update, we have been reviewing our 2008 prices. In order to maintain and improve the quality of the courses, services and facilities we offer, we are increasing tuition fees for 2008 by an average of 10%. These fees are now on our web site. So now is the ideal time to take up our special offer for courses in 2008, which will continue until December 31st, 2007. Simply register for a 2008 course, pay in full or a deposit and you will be guaranteed the 2007 tuition fee. It couldn't be easier!

Contact our Registrars by email registrar(at)haven.ca or by phone (1 877 247 9238 extension 234). Or go to our web site to register online.

For those who may not be able to come to The Haven for financial reasons, we have our financial aid program, which has been supporting individuals since 2004. In this year alone, thanks to the wonderful generosity of our donors, we have been able to provide over $45,000 in bursaries and interest free loans to more than 40 adults and children. For more information on financial aid and making a donation, visit our web site.

Staying at The Haven
We believe that staying at The Haven, and enjoying the warm hospitality we offer, is an important part of your experience. If you have been to a course at The Haven before, you will know that the learning does not stop when you leave the session room!

We are continuing the upgrading of our facilities in 2008, focusing on the dining room, session rooms and accommodations - our aim is to make your stay with us as comfortable as possible. The most recent survey results show that you enjoy staying with us and appreciate the improvements we are making.

We are offering all of our course participants a 15% Earlybird discount on the resort room rates, which are increasing in 2008. This works the same way as our Earlybird tuition rate - pay for your accommodation two weeks before the start of the course to receive the discount. This offer also applies to groups who book accommodation in advance of a conference or similar event. For more information on course participant and group booking room rates, visit our web site. In addition, if you stay with us for the full 25 days of any of our Phase courses you will pay the 2007 rate in 2008. For more information on Phase I, II and III, see our web site.

If you choose not to stay at The Haven in 2008 while attending a course, there will be a $10 per day Non-resident Fee to cover costs that course participants and guests pay as part of their accommodation fees. This fee covers the full use of the facilities as well as cleaning and maintenance of all the public areas of the property.

Eating at The Haven
Your feedback tells us that you like our food! In recent surveys, over 80% of you rated the quality, variety and selection of our food as either Good or Excellent. We are delighted to announce that meal prices in 2008 will remain the same as 2007, so you can continue enjoying three wonderful meals a day for just under $30.

Louise Amuir We thought you might like to meet some of the people behind the food. Louise Amuir our Food and Beverage Supervisor, started in The Haven kitchen 18 years ago. Originally from Vancouver, Louise has experience in social services, event planning, kitchen, hotel, and forest camp management, theatrical and concert presentation, Buddhist meditation and construction. She believes that almost anything is possible and that it's just a matter of figuring out how - our job is to plan the details!

According to Louise, love continues to be the most important ingredient in The Haven's kitchen. The staff are dedicated to making your stay nourishing on many levels. Louise says: "It has been my great pleasure to welcome groups to enjoy our wonderful food and to bask in the warm atmosphere of The Haven."

Tanisha and Travis There are one hundred years' of cooking experience in The Haven kitchen and the staff enjoy expanding their repertoire of meals and learning from each other. Travis has been with us for 5 years and teaches vegan cooking classes in Nanaimo. His food is laid-back, delicious and tastes of nourishment and relaxation. We share French-trained Donna with the Gabriola Island Golf Club. She brings a certain je ne sais quoi, which sure tastes good! Vivien brings a clean aesthetic to food and presentation. Her buffet table is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. She is interested in new food trends, blending clean tastes and health. Roberta is our Baker of Famous Granola and the Queen of Comfort Food. The kitchen team also mentors young cooks and we are so pleased to have them - they keep us current and exploring new possibilities. Tanisha and Stephanie bring energy, enthusiasm and a lot of curiosity to the kitchen.

We consider the groups we feed when planning the menus. During the summer, we add a Kids' Alternate to our regular fare. When we host groups from different cultures, we try to incorporate and add to our regular menu to help them feel a little more at home.

We look forward to welcoming you back to eat at The Haven very soon! Our current menu can always be found on our web site.

New and Returning Courses in 2008
Our 2008 schedule also offers a tasty smorgasbord of great choices! Here are some new courses for 2008, and we celebrate the return of Act Natural! We're also delighted to welcome three new Haven faculty members, who bring with them their rich and wide-ranging experience and expertise.

The Singing Soul: Improvisational A Cappella
David Hatfield       June 19-22, 2008
David Hatfield The Singing Soul is a musical journey of spontaneous self-expression and creative collaboration with others. We are moved by the preciousness of our own music, our own stories, perhaps for the first time. Join in and raise your voice in joyous a cappella grooves of our own making. Explore both conventional and non-conventional uses of the human voice in the co-creation of authentic music of the moment. WE are the instruments in a musical journey of spontaneous self-expression and collaboration with others. By turns edgy, hilarious, challenging, and deeply moving, each moment is an original composition that is unrehearsed, precious, and irreplaceable.

The Singing Soul holds two themes of focus. One is the journey of the improviser, independently and as collaborator: surrendering to muse, unleashing, connecting with truth, staying present to self and others, creating and recognizing opportunity, role clarity, moving fear into freedom. The other is skill building as vocal architects of music: building melody, harmony and bass lines, vocal percussion, creating counterpoint, soloing, utilizing lyrics - spontaneous and composed, learning and creating genres, and building ensemble skills.

David Hatfield is a leadership consultant and facilitator specializing in conflict transformation, masculinity, creativity, and communication. His program design and delivery have been contracted nationally and internationally. He has a deep love of vocal music and spontaneous music making and has been teaching 'Singing Soul' improvisational a cappella workshops since 1997 in Canada, the U.S. and New Zealand.

Body, Self and Soul for Couples
Judith and Gerry Fewster       Nov 23-28, 2008
Gerry and Judith Fewster In the fall of 2007 we introduced Body, Self and Soul: An Introduction to Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP) to the schedule, and received a fantastic response. So we are delighted that Gerry and Judith Fewster are offering Body, Self and Soul for Couples in 2008.

Trust, love, erotic sexuality, and a core experience of Self, are building blocks for a vital and sustainable relationship. Yet, unless our bodies are awakened, these remain elusive ideas rather than familiar body feelings. When these feelings are unrecognized or misunderstood, they create and perpetuate defensive patterns that make it difficult to trust, or be trusted. This serves to promote rigidity and distance rather than spontaneity and intimacy.

Today, most couples want an equal and reciprocal relationship, but few know how to accomplish this attunement of partnership. Using gentle, safe and respectful approaches, participants are skillfully guided in exploring the feelings that give rise to defensive ways of thinking and reacting. Once these feelings are recognized for what they are - vestiges of the past - they lose their power to control personal lives and shackle relationships. With this awareness, Gerry and Judith offer a variety of time-tested, practical and highly effective tools that enable people to respond to the authentic Self in creating the lives and relationships they long for.

This course is specifically designed for couples who wish to experience a heightened sense of aliveness, more fulfilling sexuality, and a sustainable sense of Self and wellbeing. With intimacy, couples can learn how to regain their hope and excitement.

Radiant Relationships
Cathy Wilder and Nancy Bradshaw       April 3-6 and Nov 27-30, 2008
Cathy Wilder Nancy Bradshaw This is a course for women who want to radiate more of their own unique beauty and who embrace their spirituality as a pathway to recreating and enjoying their primary relationship.

The course will blend The Haven's relationship and breathing models, with inspiring and revitalizing exercises and rituals that mark the beginning of a new stage in the life of your relationship. Participants will rediscover parts of themselves while building their inner strength and courage so they can open their hearts to a deeper loving of themselves and their partner. As we as women make loving shifts, the dynamic in the relationship shifts in new and exciting ways.

Participants may already be in healthy strong relationships and this is simply supporting the journey to the next level or it may be for women who are finding their way in their relationship. We will work from a model of rediscovering our own inner self/radiance, and realizing that by nurturing and thriving within ourselves, we create a loving environment. We will also look at how we are in our specific relationships and how to bring out the best of ourselves to more fully enjoy the relationship.

It will be of interest to women who enjoy blending The Haven conceptual and breathing models with meaningful spiritual rituals to truly embed the learning and mark this as an exciting new phase for the most important relationships in your life.

Nancy Bradshaw is a Neuro Linguistic Practitioner Coach, Spiritual Student and Guide, and Social Entrepreneur. Nancy has been married to a wonderful man for over 14 years with a beautiful 6 year old daughter named Faith. She was profiled by the Vancouver Sun as one of the Top 25 New Wave of Leaders, received an individual Ethics in Action award for her pioneering role in socially and environmentally innovative business, and was listed as a 2007 Visionary by Shared Vision Magazine. A focus in Nancy's life has been on developing healthy and radiant relationships with her family and has enjoyed her learning from taking The Haven's Relationships course three times as well as many other relationship, spiritual and personal growth programs. She is delighted to co-lead this course with Haven faculty member Cathy Wilder.

Choice Theory: Unlocking the Mystery of Behaviour
Lynn Sumida       March 7-9 and Nov 7-9, 2008
Lynn Sumida
Choice Theory offers a critical key to understanding human behaviour, ours and others! Developed by Dr. William Glasser, Choice Theory explains how everything we do, despite how it appears, is our best attempt to satisfy our needs. This down-to-earth course will look at how our five powerful genetic needs motivate all of our behaviour. We will explore the questions:
  • Are we always doing our best?
  • Is all behaviour purposeful?
  • Where does motivation come from?
  • Do we always have a choice, even with illness?

Lynn Sumida is a registered social worker with a Masters degree in Social Work. She is a Senior Faculty member of the William Glasser Institute and a Trainer in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). She has a wide range of experience in counseling and training, and has worked with adults, children, families, addressing issues of relationship, addictions, abuse, health, illness, and loss. She also offers workshops and training in North America, Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, and South America. Lynn lives in West Vancouver and co-founded a Vancouver company called miruspoint Inc. whose vision is to help people access their passion by removing the blocks that hold them back. Co-author of The Extraordinary Within - Welcoming Change and Unlocking our True Identity, Lynn loves sharing and learning with others, as we each discover who we really are.

Here Lynn talks about her experience of Choice Theory: "I first encountered Choice Theory as a new parent. Like most new parents, I had many ideas about what a 'good' parent was. Unfortunately, being the good parent was much harder than I had imagined. In a nutshell, I began trying harder and harder and when that didn't work, I tried putting the pressure on my dear husband. Needless to say the whole thing was going in the wrong direction. Choice Theory helped me change the pictures I had of being a good parent and to realize what was the most important focus for me, in parenting. I believe this literally saved me from damaging the precious parent-child bond. The next gift from Choice Theory was understanding power struggles, whether it is with a two year old or a teenager. As parents, this information helped us deal effectively with issues ranging from 'what should be negotiable and non-negotiable', to food and curfews issues. Choice Theory is very simple to understand and yet provides a foundation that will help you address challenges as diverse as toddlers to aging parents. Having taught Choice Theory for over twenty-five years I have found it to be invaluable in understanding human behaviour, in all its many facets."

Act Natural!
Jane Geesman and Sarah Lucht       July 18 - 20 and Oct 24 - 26, 2008
Jane Geesman Sarah Lucht Act Natural is back! This course received rave reviews from participants in the past, so don't miss this opportunity to 'take centre stage'!

Act Natural is for you if you want to:
  • Learn the fundamentals of the craft of acting
  • Gain poise and confidence in front of people
  • Fine-tune your listening and communication skills
  • Get the most out of yourself as you train your acting/performing 'instrument' - primarily your voice and body
  • Learn to be seen and heard (the primary job of the actor!)
  • Experience the intimacy and fun of acting
  • Expand your range and discover unexpressed aspects of yourself
  • Explore breath-work and contact-with-other in the acting context
A common misconception about acting is that actors 'lose' themselves in their roles. Not so! It is, in fact, the responsibility of actors to find themselves in their characters through a process of self-discovery, enhanced self-awareness, and relational availability to their fellow actors. A character is nothing more than words on a page, after all. It is only when the actor a living, breathing, feeling human being steps into the world of the play (the 'given circumstances') and utters those written words that the character takes on life; therefore, acting demands that we live, breathe and feel. As an actor, the more willing you are to reveal your full self and engage with the world of the play and the other human beings who people it, the more fully realized your character will be, and the richer the journey for actors and audience alike.

Acting is a generous endeavor, asking that you share yourself - your vulnerability, your passion - with your fellow actors and the audience. As an actor, you don't make up or pretend anything. You are committing your full, authentic self in order to tell the stories of the human experience.

Act Natural! is a two-day course for those people who are not only curious about acting and performance, but are also interested in furthering their journey of self-discovery. Through exercises designed for acting students, including improvisation, movement, scene study, and breath work, participants will experience the intimacy and aliveness of the acting process. The focus of this course is not on final performance, but on the process of bringing yourself forward and connecting with your own natural instincts - and trusting those instincts! Absolutely no prior acting experience is needed. Just bring yourself and a willingness to play ... and be prepared to discover the natural actor in you!

Heroes, Lovers & Friends
BeeBrothers Cover One of the amazing things about The Haven has always been the diverse talents of our faculty. Here's Ernie McNally, in his own words, on his most recent project:

"I'm writing to tell you about some news we are quite excited about!

Last December my brother Steve and I began a very special songwriting project writing 'personal songs' - telling real-life stories about everyday people. It quickly blossomed into a true family affair. Together we all became BeeBrothers Music.

Words can't describe what a rich and rewarding experience this has been. Each song, with unique words, music and artwork, was commissioned by individuals, couples or groups. Through this process we have made some amazing connections with many different people, and deepened our own relationships as we collaborate together.

Our first compilation CD, a collection of 12 of these personal songs entitled Heroes, Lovers & Friends, is now available! Included in this compilation are songs written for Ben and Jock, Joann Peterson, Maria Gomori, Bob Owen and Ruth Emerson, Jennifer Sass, Dick Sass and others. With every CD is a booklet sharing insights into each of these musical memoirs, with photos and lyrics that bring these songs to life. We're very happy with it and we think you might enjoy it as well. And, as is so often the case, we imagine you may be able to relate to the spirit of many of these songs.

You can hear some song clips from Heroes, Lovers & Friends at our website www.beebrothersmusic.com and if you like what you hear you can buy it on-line. You can also buy copies directly from us and through The Haven!

If you have friends you think may be interested in our new CD, we would appreciate you telling them about it. And if you are interested in learning more about having a Personal Song created, you can find information on the website, or by dropping us a line.

Thanks and Bye,
Ernie"
