The Haven News Update, Vol 6,
Issue 10
What you tell us about our courses
After every course at The Haven we send out a survey by email - your responses give us valuable information about the quality of our courses. We are delighted by the results of our most recent surveys, which continue to show the excellence of your experience at The Haven. In the last six months, 98% of survey respondents rated our courses either excellent or good, and 96% rated the course leaders either excellent or good.
Thanks to our wonderful faculty for giving their time and passion to create and deliver courses of such high quality - and thanks to you for sharing your experience with us. We are always happy to hear from you. These comments from a participant in a recent Come Alive eloquently sum up the value of what we offer:
I will never forget this experience, and I have been searching/attending workshops for over 20 years. The Haven, by far, has surpassed all other courses in its success of creating a climate where participants can receive profound, long-lasting and practical value.
A message from John Shields, The Haven's Executive Director
With the posting of the 2008 schedule on The Haven website and entering the preparation cycle for next year's budget, Fall seems to be directing our attention forward. Before I go too far into the preparation stage I want to share some reflections and recent highlights with you.
In early September we had the opportunity to bring together the Foundation Board, the Faculty, and as many of the staff who were not busy preparing the start of a Come Alive, for a planning session. This was the first time these three groups had deliberated together on the future direction of The Haven. The Board has given me the mandate to develop the capacity of the organization to meet new demands, to unfold our potential to bring The Haven experience to more participants, and to enhance its financial viability.
The day was a wonderful opportunity for me to see the passion, energy, zeal and commitment of all who are involved in The Haven's mission. When we looked at where we are now, we realized that we deliver a unique program that is continuing to draw people in good numbers to this special environment on the shores of Gabriola Island. Despite our conviction that what we are currently doing is worthwhile and popular, there was energy and interest to grow in new directions as well.
The facilitator asked what business The Haven is in. Clearly we offer learning experiences that have the potential to change lives. We touch the deep personal issues that trouble people and transform how they hold and see their life experiences. We enable people to deepen into more satisfying relationships and to communicate more effectively in the living room or in the boardroom. For many The Haven experience releases potential for greater happiness and satisfaction. We provide opportunities for the very young to see themselves in ways that will enhance the course of their lives, and we address the questions of teens and young adults about how to see themselves clearly at that crucial stage of their development.
What also emerged was a strong interest in developing a new Core Stream that addresses issues that complement the Phase programs. To do that we will need to have the capacity to do course research and development. We should have the potential to bring Faculty together to create a new series of offerings that will address the questions that many are asking about issues such as healing, the meaning of their lives, how to be of service to community and the broader society, and the role spirituality plays in personal fulfillment. Discussing these topics and finding if we can create courses that will bring home experiences in transformational learning will be part of our focus next year.
The Haven Foundation is seeking ways to use donations to enhance the quality of our participants' stay at The Haven. I have been working with the Secretary Treasurer of the Board to explore marrying the educational facilities and the charitable status of the Foundation for the overall good of our mission.
Everyone seemed exhilarated by the vitality and enhanced numbers of the participants during the summer months. Dance and Games for Kids and Teens Alive brought young energy to the Institute and the parents actively participated in Haven life. Kitchen and housekeeping staff were running flat out making the stay of our guests as pleasant as possible, while the maintenance crew was taxed to keep the facilities in good shape. Our grounds got a special sprucing in June when Don created a memorial garden in memory of Joann Peterson. This summer I learned a great deal about the demands on our reception and registrar staff when we are as busy as we were this year. My hat is off to all The Haven staff who generously stretched themselves to make The Haven experience a positive one for so many.
It was a steep and lively learning curve for me these past four months. However, the feedback has been positive and the integration into all levels of Board and Institute has been exceedingly positive.
Our 25th year - Honouring Ben and Jock
2008 is The Haven's 25th Anniversary year, and we are planning a number of different events to mark this achievement. What better way to begin the year than to honour the individuals who created The Haven and ensured its sucess into the future - Ben Wong and Jock McKeen.
We will be holding a special ceremony to honour Ben and Jock on January 1, 2008 and all are welcome. There will be more information in the next E News Update.
We invite you to join us, not just for the ceremony, but for Reflections with Ben, Jock and Cathy and Ernie McNally (28 December - 1 January). Reflections is not really a course in the traditional sense of The Haven's courses. It's more of an event, a flow of connection, a gathering, a happening ... with old and new friends sharing the year's closing days with relaxation, celebration, music, variety and fun! If you have been to Reflections, come join us again; and if not, come join us this time - each of us, moving forward in Reflection, creating a world of difference, in our own way, together.
Or join us for Come Alive with David Raithby and Linda Nicholls, 1-6 January - what better way to start a new year? Or come for both!!

Anger, Boundaries & Safety Lives On
One of our upcoming courses is Anger, Boundaries & Safety, which runs from 15-18 November. Joann Peterson's long-time friend and co-facilitator, Greg Gurel, continues to lead this course, which is more important than ever in the times in which we live. Here's Greg, describing his experience of this course:
If you had said to me twenty years ago that in 2007 I would be leading a course called Anger, Boundaries & Safety, I probably would have politely smiled, maybe nervously chuckled and inside wondered where in the world you got the idea that I remotely knew anything about anger. Although I was an accomplished software designer, skilled trainer and leader, athlete, dancer, and a budding musician, anger expertise was not listed in my bio. At that time, I believed angry people yelled, hit, used guns and in many ways represented all forces evil, and that certainly wasn't something I knew about. I didn't see myself as an angry person. I didn't feel angry; in fact, back then I didn't feel much at all.
My learning and growth as a result of being involved in the Anger, Boundaries & Safety course over the past 14 years has been immeasurable. Being able to train in the presence of the course creator, Joann Peterson, was one of the biggest gifts I have ever been given. Joann's design and delivery of the course was masterful and her life and being were profoundly inspirational to me. Joann was a visionary who believed anger expressed responsibly rather than suppressed is a more healthful and humanistic choice.
Today, I am delighted to claim that anger is a wonderful part of my feeling repertoire. I learned that anger is a secondary feeling and finding my anger allowed many of my other feelings to surface that were previously held down. I have experienced time and time again how a safe, boundaried, and responsible expression of my anger has cleared the path for my passion and creativity to blossom. I have also come to conclude that expressing anger in a responsible way in an intimate relationship is one of the most risky and intimate exchanges possible. It was imperative to me on my path to have a felt understanding of how to do that.
Join Greg for Anger, Boundaries & Safety in November. For a full course description and online registration, visit our website.
Body Self & Soul: An Introduction to IBP
There was an overwhelmingly positive response to the first Body, Self & Soul, with sixteen participants attending the first introduction to Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP), held at The Haven on Thanksgiving weekend.
Join us for the second Body, Self and Soul at The Haven from 9-11 November. This workshop is in preparation for a two-year foundational training to be held at The Haven beginning in early February 2008. Professionals who wish to incorporate the most advanced somatic approaches into their practices, and people who are looking to enhance their own personal awareness and aliveness are invited to attend this introductory seminar. For a full course description and online registration, visit our website.
Hilary Leighton, Director of Continuing Studies at Royal Roads University and a participant on the October course, commented: My experience this past weekend is very different from any other time I have spent at The Haven. IBP is indeed a gentle way to mapping, remembering, bringing awareness and compassion to self and other. In my bones, I just know that this is a way for me to integrate learning and feeling, body-held memories and stories, and ways of being and relating in the world. The underlying message to me about IBP is love … all the way down to my toes. Let me know the February date so I can register (for the full training).
Some of our faculty and interns have also seen the benefit of IBP training - this from Carole Ames:
I participated in an IBP Introductory Weekend in May 2006, and I was interested enough to then begin IBP Training. I wanted to learn more about techniques that I was already somewhat familiar with, as well as examining more of the theoretical framework. I am now in my second year of study and I continue to be intrigued, rewarded and challenged.
Our primary reference book has been Body, Self and Soul by Rosenberg and Rand, which I first read for New Horizons in 1993. I think that then, as now, the willingness to critically examine and debate a multitude of approaches to this business of being human has been fundamental to The Haven's strength as a centre for learning.
Aspects of IBP I am appreciating the most are the gentleness of the approach, the strong focus on presence and boundaries, and the variety of self-release techniques. These all help to create a very respectful and solid container in which to work.
There have also been aspects of the IBP which appear different from my own approach and this is in fact is what I have valued the most. I have found myself re-examining my own assumptions and approaches, in both theory and practice, confirming some and shifting others.
In all, I believe that IBP is very complementary with The Haven's approach, and students and practitioners of either discipline can learn from each other.

The Power of Direct Mirroring with Cathy McNally and Wendy Huntington - June 6-9, 2008
For many years people had the opportunity to learn with Joann Peterson the process of mirroring and how it impacts our lives. We are delighted to have two very dear friends of Joann's, Cathy McNally and Wendy Huntington bring this learning alive again in honour of Joann and the importance of what she taught.
The myth of the mirror impacts our relationship with our body as well as relationships with partners, children, friends, bosses, employees and co-workers.
Early in life, we adopted messages (often inferred) from others as 'the truth' about ourselves and about our bodies. We are unaware that these reflections were often distortions of flawed mirroring. If these 'truths' remain unexamined, we live our life in reaction to others.
This course provides an opportunity to explore and update mirrored messages and learn about direct, honest, personal mirroring and use this style of feedback as a practice ground for nurturing honest, intimate relationships.

A Good Beginning with Judy Sellner - July 18-20, 2008
Judy Sellner, a friend and long-time Faculty member of The Haven, leads this wonderful course for couples in the early stages of a relationship and either considering or making a commitment to be in a primary relationship together.
The beginning of a relationship is the most enjoyable and the most challenging time and having a clear idea about how to create a blossoming future together is extremely valuable. True relating means getting to know yourself and your partner in a personal way that becomes the source of interest, joy and newness between you and in your life.
For a full course description and online registration, visit our website.
Judy also leads the very successful Couples in Conflict course, which is already full in October and runs again from 23 to 25 November 2007, and eight times in 2008.

The Gift of Giving
We often receive very moving letters from bursary recipients about how our donors' generosity has helped transform their lives. This comes from a mother whose children were able to attend Dance and Games for Kids (Kids in The Spotlight) in July 2007.
To the generous donors of the Haven Foundation:
Thank you so very much for your financial donation(s) which made it possible for my children to attend an incredible summer week of Dance and Games for Kids with Denise Goldbeck. Your donations really do reach people who need them. Little hearts and souls are mending as a result of your generosity. Thank you again for your gifts of kindness through the Foundation.
An appreciative mom, Dance and Games for Kids, 2007
