The 2008 Courses
For nearly 25 years, The Haven has offered
individuals the pleasure of personal discovery in an atmosphere of
respect for individual priorities, strengths and challenges. Our core
courses - the Come Alive and Phases I, II and III, created more than 30
years ago by our founders Bennet Wong and Jock McKeen - continue to
help many people find strength and meaning in their lives. Our faculty
members also offer a diverse and exciting range of courses designed to
suit a broad range of life circumstances, interests and learning
styles, and they continue to develop new courses and fine-tune current
course materials and activities.
We have been steadily increasing the number of Come
Alives offered in recent years, and we are delighted that these courses
continue to attract participants in large numbers. In 2008 there will
twenty Come Alives,
as well as three Phase
I courses, one Phase
II and one Phase
III (New Horizons).
We are also fortunate to be able to offer in 2008
other courses which continue to have relevance and transform lives.
Visit our web site
to choose from a wide range of courses focusing on relationships,
sexuality, anger, intuition, boundaries, the shadow, fear and anxiety,
passion, facilitation skills, music, humour and much more.
And we are not finished yet - we will continue to
update the course
schedule on our web site with additional courses for 2008.
New Courses for 2008
At The Haven we are committed to providing the
finest educational opportunities possible - and this includes creating
new courses which add to our broad range of personal learning and
professional training.
Here's what's new for 2008 so far - we will be
adding more new courses in the near future.
Happiness: A Seekers Guide
May 9 - 12, 2008
Al Chambers
brings this new course to The Haven, on a topic which is of interest to
everyone.
Happiness -- an idea difficult to define, confusing to understand and very, very elusive to grasp or hang on to, is the subject of many books, conferences and websites. Yet, are we happier now than in the past? Apparently not!
In spite of the external advances in our modern life measures of happiness do not show a corresponding increase. This raises many questions - and they are not all easy to answer. However, we are learning it is possible, regardless of whom we are as individuals or the situation of our lives, to increase our own level of personal Happiness.
This workshop offers the opportunity for participants to understand their own relationship to Happiness and to learn to make more heartfelt and satisfying choices in their lives – a challenging, and rewarding process!

online registration, see our course description.

Adding to Skills 1 & 2, here come
3 & 4!
Gwen Ewan,
our skillful Director of Education, will be offering two new Skills
courses for interns, assistants, group leaders and clinicians.
Skills 3: Gestalt Plus
February 15-18, 2007
The term Gestalt refers to a school of
psychotherapy, the concept of wholeness and to a practice or exercise.
This course examines all three definitions, with most time focused on
gestalt as an exercise.
Participants in the course will:
- develop their skills in leading gestalt exercises
- learn what to do when work "falls apart"
- practice their leadership skills
- develop greater insight into their own personal issues
- be able to recognize, and lead several different
types of gestalt exercise
|
Through lectures, discussion, and practice,
participants become familiar with leading gestalt exercises of several
different types. In addition, students will have opportunity to discuss
common issues that arise in leading individual pieces of work. For more information and
online registration, see our course description.
Skills 4: Letting Others Be (Projection
and Transference)
June 13-16, 2008
| "Let other be other" |
| Sallie McFague,
Theologian |
Letting Others Be is an opportunity to
directly explore the processes of projection and transference. The
extent to which we see our preconceptions in another person, is the
extent to which we fail to make direct contact with that person. As we
project our own needs, desires, assumptions and processes onto others
around us, we miss the person themselves. This projection underlies
transference, counter transference, prejudice and contempt. By
exploring these processes we can find ways to understand and work with
them in the service of respectful, equal, contactful relationship.
These are issues of great value for anyone intending to lead groups,
supervise staff, or work in the helping professions.
This course includes lectures, discussions and
experiential exercises. Students are encouraged to look at their own
experience to develop their ability to make contact with others in both
their personal and work relationships.
Participants in the course will:
- increase their awareness of their own process
- learn how to use counter transference clues to
understand events in group
- learn how and why transference is helpful and methods
to increase or decrease it
- learn how to use counter transference clues to
understand themselves and others
- learn appropriate and ethical ways to approach
transference situations
- be able to recognize different types of transference
- increase their leadership competence
For more information and
online registration, see our course description.

5 Elements Practicum: An Oriental
Philosophic Approach to Energy
May 22 - 25, 2008
This newly designed course
is being led by faculty member Jane Olynyk.
Jane also teaches the Chinese Medicine part of Phase III (New
Horizons) and is a licensed acupuncturist, holding a Diploma in Chinese
Medicine, which allows her to bring a unique approach to her work as a
therapist and eastern medical practitioner.
Oriental Medicine Philosophy, particularly 5 Element Theory is a rich truly holistic model of viewing ourselves, our world and our process of change/stuckness. Its vivid imagery, born out of Taoism, has a very broad scope, applicable in our daily lives, far beyond the obvious ‘treatment’ aspect.
This course focuses on the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of the Tradition, offering a grounding in how to use the model as an alternative to other psychological models of change/development. We will focus on our relationship with ourselves and the nature of Harmony/Disharmony within us, recognizing the crucial component of contact with other in any change/healing process. We will review how to assess disharmony including pulse taking, and applicable acupuncture pts to facilitate Qi movement.
Prerequisites for this course: New Horizons (Phase 3) or some prior knowledge of Chinese Medicine.
For more information and
online registration, see our course description.

Journey to Self, Family Reconstruction
and Satir Foundations
June 16-22, 2008 (Journey
to Self); August 17-23, 2008 (Family Reconstruction); June 13-16, 2008
& August 14-17, 2008 (Satir Foundations)
Maria Gomori
has been offering her Journey to Self I and II courses at The Haven for
many years - and many of us have had the privilege of experiencing
Maria's passion for her work.
In 2008, there will be a slight change to
these courses. Instead of Journey to Self I and II, Maria will be
leading Journey to Self in June and a course focused on Family
Reconstruction in August.
Cathy McNally
will be offering Satir Foundations immediately prior to both courses as
an introduction to the underlying processes of the Satir model. For
those who have not had previous experience with Satir work, Satir
Foundations is a prerequisite for Journey to Self and Family
Reconstruction. Please note that experience of other Haven courses
is not required for Journey to Self, Family Reconstruction or Satir
Foundations.
For more information on all these courses, see our course descriptions.

A New Course for 2007
2007 is not over yet, and we are delighted to offer
an opportunity to experience a new course, Transformation Tango, before
the year is done.
Dance into your life with Transformation Tango
November 30 - December 2, 2007

The Argentine tango is a constantly evolving dance
and musical form, with continual changes occurring every day on the
social dance floor. Human beings are constantly evolving and are faced
with the rapid pace of change in society and within ourselves. The
dance of tango can serve as a meaningful metaphor for the dance of
relationship with our selves and with others.
This course will introduce the basics of the
Argentine tango to participants with an emphasis on using the form as a
means for personal development in body and mind awareness,
communication, contact and direct non-verbal dialogue. Through this
course you can: experience greater self-awareness; overcome fears,
emotional and physical blocks, anxiety and low self-image; gain more
confidence in interactions as well as skills with the basic form of
Argentine Tango; reduce you stress levels. And it's lots of fun!
Faculty member Dr. Phil
Winkelmans, an accomplished speaker and trainer of intuitive based
therapies will lead this course with Gwen Spinks
, a professional and soulful dance instructor for almost twenty years,
trained by some of the top Argentine tango instructors.
Phil describes how he has combined his love of tango
with his work:
As time went on I began to recognize that
challenges I faced learning Tango were similar to those I've faced in
other areas of my life. Because of this I could feel Tango calling
forth all the best attributes of the self… literally mind/body/soul. It
was then I began to understand Tango could be used as an instrument for
personal transformation.
Who should attend? Anyone and everyone - singles,
couples, professional dancers, and beginners who never thought they
could dance a step in their lives. This workshop uses dance as a symbol
for transformation for all areas of your life. For more information and
online registration, see our course description.

August Review
Horse Wisdom
In August, Horse Wisdom was offered for the first
time at The Haven. One of the participants was Gwen Ewan, our Director
of Education, who describes an experience which was richer than she had
imagined….
My time with the horses was all about boundaries
- and a boundary discussion with a 1600 lb. being really gets my
attention. I have never been a 'horse person', and I was not surprised
to learn that to be around a horse I needed to pay attention, to bring
my awareness to the situation - no sliding off elsewhere in my mind.
Every time I worked with any of the horses, I found myself present and
in my body. So, to my surprise, Horse Wisdom turned out to be all about
intimacy - that aliveness and excitement of presence and contact. While
learning to lead a small welsh pony named Buttercup I also learned from
Horse Wisdom the importance of intention. If I was clear in my
intention, Buttercup very willingly followed wherever I wished - if I
was muddy at all about where we were going, she would get in my way,
wander off, and generally be difficult. So Horse Wisdom taught me about
my willingness to stand forward and to assert myself. Amazing how much
there was to be found was in a three-day course!! I greatly enjoyed the
skill of the leaders, the beautiful farm, the sharing with fellow
participants, and the best part was the horses!
For those of you who wish you could have been there,
Horse Wisdom is
back next year in April (17-20) and July (10-13). Register now to
guarantee the 2007 tuition fee.

The Registrars - Our Dynamic Duo
The Haven Registrars are an integral part of the
team that supports your learning at The Haven. On a daily basis, Morag
and Rose handle the many tasks which make up their role. What they
actually do goes far beyond the tasks they perform - we know this,
because you tell us so often in surveys what an important part of your
experience they are. Thank you Morag and Rose for your outstanding
commitment to customer service and your dedication to making
participants' experience special.
Here are Morag and Rose in their own words.
Sept 11th was my 11th year anniversary
working at The Haven. It is hard to believe that it has been that long.
I started my first year in housekeeping with a few kitchen shifts
thrown into the mix, then straight into the registrar's office. For the
past seven years I have also been Front Office Supervisor, which has
provided me with both my greatest challenges and learning. I think that
my experience in the various departments has helped to give me a big
picture focus and dedication to making people's experience as special
as possible.
On a personal note I am the mother of two
grown daughters and enjoy spending time in my garden and traveling with
my life partner, Cheryl. I have participated in a number of courses
over the years and strive to bring all that I have learned to both my
work and personal life.
The past 11 years have been some of the
most tumultuous and richest years of my life. I appreciate what The
Haven has to offer and still enjoy my job - from talking to people on
the phone, to greeting them when they arrive and welcoming them back
when they return. (Morag)
|
After being the Manager and then Registrar
at The Haven in 1985 to early 1987, I returned in August 2006 for
another chapter as Registrar! Back to a community of close long-term
friends and 'family'!
In the 20 years in between, I have been
doing individual counselling and facilitating groups for young
children, youth at risk, youth in grief and those in career and
employment transition. I am a licenced acupressurist and am just
beginning to utilize that learning in my private practice.
What I enjoy most about my position as
Registrar is witnessing the transformations that happen for people as
they access more of themselves and their wonders while in the courses
at The Haven! I talk to people as they explore what might be their best
next step, from a course perspective, and then again during and after
completion of that course - a daily reminder of the significance of the
work people do for themselves here. The other favourite part of my job
is the Bursary Fund management. The Haven Foundation and its donors
provide funds to support applicants that do not have the resources to
attend courses; I particularly enjoy working with these folks and
providing the means for them to have the experience of a lifetime!
And of course, the best challenge in this
job is 'walking the talk' and the ongoing growth of being part of this
wonderful place we call The Haven! (Rose)
Our Registrars are available 7 days a week -

a course, or email registrar(at)haven.ca.

Just Quickly...
Work Opportunity - Attention business analysts
We are looking for someone to help us get started on
our systems integration project. The immediate opportunity is a small
part of the project and needs to be completed rather quickly; it is
simply to look at the scope of the project and provide us with a budget
and an RFP for the real analysis job. We imagine this part of the job
could be completed in two or three days and does not absolutely have to
be done on site. If you are interested contact Bill Leuze at
operations(at)haven.ca or (250) 247 9211 ex. 233 for our RFP which
includes a good snapshot of the next phase of the project. Be quick -
we have to find someone by the end of September.
Calling Haven participants in the Central
Okanagan/Kelowna area
Are there any 'Havenites' in the Central Okanagan/Kelowna area who
would be interested in re-establishing a peer support group for those
of us who have done courses at The Haven and would like to continue to
practice what has been learned? If you are interested in exploring the
possibility of founding a group please contact Sandra Bonar at
(250)491-9004 or e-mail san005(at)silk.net.
