Our stunning ocean view

Summer at The Haven
Henry James wrote that "summer afternoon" are the two most beautiful words in the English language. We have been enjoying our fill of summer afternoons (as well as mornings and fabulous sunsets) here at The Haven, during our busiest season. And it's not over yet! Here are some of the highlights of our summer, starting with what's yet to come. There's plenty more on offer as we ease into fall, so please join us!

August
  • During the first half of August we welcomed the participants on our Teens Alive courses - for the first time this year, we had three courses running consecutively. As ever, the courses were over-subscribed, with teens who have done the course before and want to do it again, and others coming for the first time. The ongoing popularity of these courses is testament to the fact that the experience David Raithby and Linda Nicholls offer to Teens Alive participants is very special, and difficult to find elsewhere.
  • For the first time this year, a group of the Teens Alive participants visited Deborah Marshall at Generation Farms in Nanaimo to experience the work that she offers there.
  • The Horses of Generation Farm
  • Horse Wisdom, led by Deborah Marshall, is one of two new courses on the schedule in August - the other is 19 and Beyond, the first course created specifically for the 19-24 age group, and led by David and Linda. It's always exciting to have new courses to expand the range of our offerings. We hope that both courses will be successful into the future.
  • Other courses in August include Couples in Conflict (Judy Sellner), two Come Alive groups (Gwen Ewan and Wendy Huntington and Susan Clarke and Wendy), Relationships (Ernie & Cathy McNally), The Biology of Empowerment (Lee Pulos) and Journey to Self II (Maria Gomori).
July
  • We celebrated the 20th birthday of Dance and Games for Kids with five fabulous productions of Oklahoma!
  • We launched the Youth Leadership program, and thanks to the generosity of our donors, received more that $30,000, nearly three times our target for this year.
  • We welcomed nearly 30 participants onto our Phase I - a record number for recent years. We were privileged to witness the highs and lows of their journey, and look forward to welcoming them back again in the future. For more on this, see below.
  • We had two Come Alives at the beginning and end of the month, led by Rick Jackson and Susa Holt, and Derek Lacroix and Leslie Whyte. We are delighted that, having increased the number of Come Alives in 2007, we are still averaging 24 participants on each course.
  • And there's more! Linda Nicholls returned for Shadow Play; Carole Ames led the Quantum Laugh (following a wonderful write up on the course in the Times Colonist - read it here.) Peggie Merlin and Ruth Emerson both honoured Joann by presenting the first Women and Sexuality since her passing; and we loved seeing our old friends Bud and Michele Baldwin, back for If You Really Loved Me.
June
  • We welcomed old friends and new to the Mandarin Mini Phase I and Mandarin Reflections. For more on this, see below.
  • Also from Taiwan, we enjoyed seeing Al Chambers again, who led Come Alive groups in May with Cathy Wilder and in June with Gillian Enright.
  • We all came together at the end of June to celebrate the life of Joann Peterson - for more on this, please check out our June News Update.
  • Many of our wonderful faculty offered courses - Mary Holdgrafer and Wendy Huntingdon (Healing Stitches), Linda Nicholls (Relationship: Renew and Review and Transitions), David Raithby and Sandey McCartney (Transforming Fear and Anxiety), Maria Gomori (Journey to Self I and Transitions), Marlyn Farrell (Primal Whisperings), Jane Olynyk and Gillian Enright (Sensational Contact), Judy Sellner (Couples in Conflict) and Ellery and Mary Helen Littleton (From Memory to Memoir).
We are truly fortunate to have such talented and innovative course leaders dedicated to exploring, discovering and sharing their discoveries here with us at The Haven.

A participant from Primal Whisperings described the impact of the course on her as follows: "Primal Whisperings freed up a large chunk of space in my heart and mind. I have found a way to integrate some of my old childhood tapes into me as a strong, loving woman today, with your help and the witnessing of my fellow course participants. This integration process in me has been very gentle and loving, something I have not been committed to before. I understand how I can only be responsible for myself make choices. I am both excited and a little scared. Your course seemed to put so much together for me."

The summer is also a busy time for financial aid - since May we have given out nearly $20,000 in bursaries to nineteen adults and children. A huge thank you to our donors who make it possible for so many people to come and share The Haven experience. For more information on donations and financial aid see http://havenfoundation.org.

Phase One Testimonial
Chris Brown first came to The Haven for the Teens Alive courses in 2002. We were delighted to see him back this year for Come Alive and then Phase I - it's always very special for us to see a Teens participant return to take other courses. Here Chris shares his experiences of the Phase I - he enjoyed it so much, he's coming back to join The Haven staff at the end of August, as well as continuing his learning with us.

"So it has been about two weeks since my Phase I: Self-awareness ended and wow, what can I say about this program? Everything that we did - EVERYTHING - was based around self-awareness, even if I didn't realize it at the time. I learned a huge amount about myself, some of it in the moment, some of it in retrospect. I saw and experienced a lot of things that I never thought I would, some funny, some crazy, and some beautiful. As a Level I intern (as well as a person!) I found the entire experience completely reinforced my belief in what The Haven is all about and the processes I went through. I value this course HIGHLY! I would highly recommend this course for first timers and people who have taken courses at The Haven before. Part of Phase I is Shadow Play, and afterwards I felt I needed something to symbolize a new start/life/me, so I shaved my head and have kept it near bald. What an amazing experience this has been! Reading back through my journal over the last two weeks is almost like reading a book, I can't believe I did some of the things I did, however I am more than happy that I did participate in everything. I believe I made some honest, long term friends and am extremely pleased with the course, leaders, interns and the Haven staff, which I have recently become a part of! With Phase II not that distant I am looking forward to seeing friends old and new there. I'll be in the kitchen at the Haven, so if you read this, come and say hi! I am (almost) always open and willing to talk about MY experiences. Long live the communication model!"

Our next Phase I starts on October 18 and is led by Ernie and Cathy McNally. For more information and online registration see our website.

Byron and John Shields - The Executive Director

Take a breath and have a seat on the "Breathe" bench…
People give back to The Haven in many different ways. This summer, Byron Ayers and Marina Bakker-Ayers, who both came to courses at The Haven this year, have found a way to ensure their take home message stays at The Haven for all to enjoy. Byron has created a beautiful, engraved wooden bench which now sits on the front lawn - the engraving is based on Peter Joyes' beautiful calligraphy. This from Byron and Marina in their own words:

"Breathe!… It all starts there and the possibilities are limitless. Through taking Come Alive, and now both completing Phase I, my wife and I have both gained huge awareness into the possibilities that lie ahead for our journey together. Renewed love with an emphasis on friendship and trust while operating from a place of integrity is what we have to look forward to. We wanted to give something back to The Haven, so it was our intent to donate this bench to show our love and appreciation for the people and the place comprising The Haven. Please sit on the bench and enjoy the breathtaking views, special moments, and exciting encounters. What a world to discover. (And remember to breathe!) With love and appreciation from Byron Ayers and Marina Bakker-Ayers."

Byron and Marina…We appreciate the many gifts you have given us. Thank you!

The Haven Around the World
We can now list Moscow, Russia as a host to The Haven's courses. In late July Linda Nicholls and David Raithby (assisted by Sandey McCartney and Sean Feng) led a five-day Come Alive course in Moscow. This was followed by Ben and Jock's two-day Communicating and Connecting. Both courses were hosted by our friends at Huawei and both were well received. Next up Ben and Jock will be presenting Communicating and Connecting in Nairobi, Kenya in September, and later this fall two Come Alive courses will be presented in Shenzhen China through our friends at Hai Wen.

The heart-felt reception our courses receive worldwide is a testament to the enduring value of the ideas and tools we present, the excellent quality of our leaders and assistants, the wonderful support provided by our translators and organizers, and the amazing curiosity and courage demonstrated by our participants, most of whom are learning what we teach through translation!

Similar to our experience with marketing The Haven here at home, we find that the most effective way of identifying international opportunities is by word of mouth. If you have ideas for ways The Haven can be active internationally, please be in touch with Carole Ames, our Director of International Relations: carole(at)haven.ca.

Mandarin Mini Phase - Groupshot

Mandarin Mini Phase 1
Since 1991, groups of participants from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan have been coming to The Haven once a year to experience The Mandarin Mini Phase, a condensed version of Phase I led in English and translated "in the moment" into Mandarin. This year, from June 15 to 29, David Raithby led the course with an enthusiastic group of participants (and translators), and Linda Nicholls led Shadow Play. Here is an excerpt (edited) from some letters we received from the participants.

"Thank you very much for leading us through the wonderful Mini Phase I during the past 14 days at The Haven. It was a very good chance for everyone to deepen self-awareness and we began to know our patterns, potentials, and became more open to connecting. Many of us found we could release the work pressure and became more balanced. It's amazing that when we communicate and are connected with each other lots of unhealthy symptoms disappeared, like insomnia, depression, anxiety, emptiness, lack of energy, etc. The result is that everyone got what they wanted and some of them felt that it exceeded their expectation. We want to express our appreciation for your concern and connection to everybody, all of us could feel your caring, loving, energy, humor and warm heart. And we also appreciate how the leaders' team worked together, and how everyone "walk talks" together. Your words and your behavior influence us a lot! We appreciate very much the time we spent together; it was a meaningful time for everybody.

We also want to express our appreciation to our small group leaders, who spent lots of time with us every day, trying to understand us, care for us and help us. We will remember every touching moment we shared together. We laughed, cried, had fun together and were connected with each other by heart. Through your effort, the days we had together will become remarkable memories in our lives."

With loving,

Andy, Frank, Jack, Jiping, Linda, Ling, Lily, Lifang, Victor, Yafang, Zhinan, Zhuolan, Zhufang."

Suzanne Partridge - Haven Bodyworker Bodyworker Focus
We know (because you often tell us in the participant surveys) how important a role our bodyworkers play in your experience with us. Many of you have already enjoyed a reflexology session with Suzanne Partridge - for those who haven't, it comes highly recommended! Here's more about Suzanne in her own words.

"I have been a Certified Reflexologist at The Haven since 1995, when Elfi invited me to join her on the bodywork team. I began my personal journey at The Haven in 1992 with a Come Alive and I have since completed all the Phase courses as well as many others. In New Horizons I gained an appreciation of the five elements of Chinese medicine and of other healing modalities. I have interned Women & Sexuality every year since 1995.

I was employed for 14 years with the Edmonton Public School Board as a physio aide with handicapped children. I am a proud grandmother to three active grandsons who live in Edmonton and Saskatoon. I have recently moved back to Nanaimo and continue to maintain a practice in West Vancouver.

Reflexology as I offer it is a guided tour of the body's energy flow. I will offer a word or picture as an assist to more fully describe the sensation or constriction. Clients engage in a dialogue with themselves as I sense and share an energy block. This will often lead to new choices in their daily lives. In a relaxed, safe environment, people come to a place that is right for them."

For more on our bodywork services, check our website.

Just Quickly...
The Maintenance Department at The Haven has an immediate opening for a skilled maintenance worker. If you are interested or know anyone who might be, check out the job description.

Raven Picture This year we have had an unprecedented number of queries about how local our food supply is. Our answer is: as local as possible.

This year we approached a young farmer about growing some produce especially for us. So this spring, Raven (daughter of Roxanne from our Reception) planted a couple of fields of squash for us to use in our kitchen. When you bite into roasted butternut squash or ladle sauce onto spaghetti squash or enjoy the grilled zucchini on your cheese melt, you're probably tasting the goodness of Gabriola sun and soil and Raven's cheery, careful work. Thanks Raven!
