Pathways to Successful Living - Phases I, II, and III
Our remarkable Phase courses have developed and grown over a period of 30 years, and in that time have helped many people to find strength and meaning in their lives. We invite you to come to Phase I, II or III, and follow your own path to increased self-awareness, enhanced relationships and successful living.
One of the most exciting months of my life! A time for discussing and understanding old patterns and finding new ways to transform.
Phase I: Self-Awareness Oct 18 - Nov 12, 2007
Part A: Oct 18 - 30 Part B: Oct 31 - Nov 12
We were delighted to welcome nearly 30 participants into our Phase I course this month - this is testament to the enduring importance of this course.
The theme of Phase I is enhancing self-awareness. A recent participant has this to say about his experience of the course:
I am finding myself in a place of clarity about the way I want to live my life. I am experiencing a new enthusiasm about creating the life that I want. Attending Phase I has been a most valuable gift to myself.
Phase I offers a full 25 days in which to explore personal issues and themes in more detail and look at new possibilities for your life. A longer course means that you can investigate in depth who you are and how you live your life. With more time together, there is opportunity for closer relationships with fellow participants, and that in turn brings to attention life issues such as transition, meaning, individuation, and intimacy.
If you can't commit to 25 days, you can take the course in two parts, starting with Phase I part A.
Call our registrars on 1-877-247-9238 extension 234. Or go to Phase I for course descriptions or online registration.
Phase II: Self and Other
March 22 - April 16, 2008 Part A: March 22 - April 3 Part B: April 4 - 16
While Phase One raises and examines the basic question of 'Who am I?', Phase II asks 'How do I inhabit myself in all the ways I do my life, including my roles, and how do I do this and still maintain my relationships?' Gwen Ewan, Director of Education.
Phase II has been under review in 2007 and we are delighted that it is back on the schedule in March 2008 with Cathy and Ernie McNally as the new course leaders. Thanks and appreciation go to Wendy Huntington and Gwen Ewan for their inspired leadership and development of this course in recent years.

Phase III: New Horizons The Conceptual Self
Sept 23 - Oct 18, 2007
NEW! Part A: Sept 23 - Oct 5 Part B: Oct 6 - 18
New Horizons (Phase III) is about exploring new horizons by challenging our thinking and beliefs about 'reality' and examining our assumptions in the light of new possibilities. Our beliefs form the foundation upon which we stand and by examining them and considering other options, we can discover a great deal about ourselves and the way we live our lives.
Seeing ourselves and how we learn, and seeing where and how we block new learning and/or stay rigidly attached to what we believe reality to be, is a big part of the New Horizons experience.
Using the body and its energy, and various experiential approaches for inviting change, students will increase their knowledge and skills and will engage in lively discussions with Wayne, Jane and other participants as they explore traditional Chinese and Western approaches to reality, meaning and healing.
Phase III: New Horizons is now offered in two parts, A and B, and focuses on integrating the conceptual underpinnings of the Phase courses. Wayne Dodge and Jane Olynyk will lead the course, with Ben Wong and Jock McKeen as guest presenters for some sessions.
This from Jane:
"I LOVE this program! Wayne and I invite you to expand the boundaries of your present day beliefs. We will offer you a very rich range of ideas and hands-on learning taken from many past and present cultures and leading edge concepts of thinkers/philosophers. We will take you on a learning journey, from Freud, to quantum physics, to oriental medicine, to cell biology, to Reich, to mythology, the chakras, to Carl Jung, psychic healing, existentialism, & more ... with poetry thrown in the mix! We hope you will join us on a 'make your head spin with possibilities' exploring-new-horizons experience."
Call our registrars on 1-877-247-9238 extension 234. Or go to Phase III for course descriptions or online registration.

Dance and Games for Kids
Happy Birthday and a new name!
It seems unbelievable, but this year we are celebrating the twentieth birthday of Dance and Games for Kids. The very first Dance and Games for Kids took place in 1987 with a production of Cats - since then it has grown dramatically as its popularity has increased. This year there are 5 courses throughout July, all fully booked, with a production of Oklahoma. If you think it's impossible to put on a musical with a group of kids of different ages in just 4 days, you had better come along and check it out!
Denise Goldbeck, who created the course and has led it since the beginning, describes her experience of the Dance and Games phenomenon:
"Dance and Games has grown through an organic process to fill the needs presented by those participating. It's a course that fits everyone who takes part, whatever their age. I have loved every minute of the last 20 years and looking forward to the next 20 - under our new name..."
To celebrate turning 21, Dance and Games for Kids will be renamed, Kids in the Spotlight.
Go to Dance and Games for Kids for course descriptions or online registration for 2008.
Youth leadership program - from Rachel Davey
Over the past twenty years, Dance and Games for Kids has become one of The Haven's most popular and successful courses. What Denise has created is in effect two courses in one - the creation of the musical with all of the children, and the training of the 'Junior Leaders' - now known as Youth Interns.
What the Youth Interns learn and practice as part of Dance and Games for Kids is leadership in its most practical form. Other, more traditional leadership courses for young people use adults to teach groups of young people how to lead. Here at The Haven, the Youth Interns learn from each other and the younger participants, as well as from Denise. Instead of learning about leadership, they are practising it in real situations every day.
We want to build on what has been created through the Dance and Games course, and establish a Haven Youth Leadership program. We are at the very beginning of the process this year. Our aim is to set up a Youth Leadership program which will enable young people to have practical, hands-on experience of demonstrating leadership skills with their peers, groups of younger children and adults. Ultimately, the goal is that the program will become self-sustaining and be an opportunity that all young participants on Haven courses can enjoy.
This is a project for which funds are being raised through Haven Foundation - so far we have had a wonderfully generous response, including a donor who will match all contributions made in July to the Youth Intern program up to $10,000. If you are interested in making a donation, I would be delighted to discuss this further. My email address is programs(at)haven.ca and I can be contacted by phone on 1 877 247 9238 extension 235.
I believe that the Youth Leadership program will create an exciting future both for The Haven and the participants of the program.
Virginia Satir & Maria Gomori

As part of its 25th anniversary, the publication Psychotherapy Networker surveyed American clinicians, asking the following question: Over the last 25 years, which figures have most influenced your practice? Virginia Satir came in at number 5 out of 10, a demonstration of her enduring importance. The article speaks of her 'shimmering vitality' and describes her as 'a giant amongst therapists' and as 'an evangelist, for a vision of Family Therapy as the means of healing a wounded world'.
The Haven is fortunate to have been closely associated with Virginia Satir; she presented two workshops a year from 1982 to her death in 1988. We are even more fortunate that Maria Gomori continues to lead courses here based on Satir Family Reconstruction and other Satir processes. These are healing and integrative ways to make sense of our selves and our lives. Maria worked intensively with Virginia Satir for over 20 years and has been a faculty member and advanced trainer in Satir's Avanta International Training Organization since 1981. Maria is offering her Journey to Self II course from August 27 to September 2. For those of you who have not already done any Satir work, or those wanting a refresher, Cathy McNally will be leading an introductory course immediately prior to Journey to Self II.
Journey to Self II and online registration is here.

Healing Stitches: It's not about sewing in a straight line…
Healing Stitches took place in early June and proved once again to be an enlightening and creatively rich experience. CrisMarie Campbell attended this year's course and had this to say of her experience:
"I have wanted to attend Healing Stitches for some time. I am not a seamstress nor do I aspire to be one, but I do like color, shape and texture. What I didn't know is that the whole workshop is NOT about stitching or sewing- it is really about connecting back to creativity. We only sewed in the afternoons, other times we worked around connecting to our creativity in many forms.
One afternoon when I was enjoying my design, I was horrified when Mary said, "Okay, I want you to cut your piece up and reassemble it. You have one hour."
"Are your crazy?" Lo-and-behold I did it and it was better. Later Mary stunned me again, "Why don't you use this metallic thread and just sew." "What? You mean don't sew in a straight line?" "Exactly. Don't even sew inside the edges - let yourself sew wherever you like."
I was like a kid in a candy store. This was my type of sewing! I loved it.
Healing Stitches is about teaching a form, but is not about following the rules. Instead, it is about discovering the creative flow inside of you and allowing it to move in whatever direction it wants to go."
Healing Stitches will be back next year from 6-11 June 2008. For more information contact or our registrars on 1-877-247-9238 extension 234.

- John Cserny | |
John Cserny a Haven friend and participant passed away in May. His loving wife, Judy Hancock, shares her feelings…
"On May 6, 2007, my beloved husband and soulmate, John Cserny, died of cancer at age 55. The Haven was John's favourite place, and together we enriched our intimacy and joy in each other through taking Come Alives, Phase I, Self-Compassion, and Relationships.
John came from a very difficult childhood, and Haven helped him to overcome the pain, negativity and victimhood that was the legacy of that time. At The Haven, John experienced his true self being seen and received with lovingness. He cherished the loving connection he found with many people. Phase I, in particular, was a powerful experience that helped him step into his strength and live more fully and successfully right up until his death.
Those of you who engaged with John at the courses we took together gave him the profound gift of being seen for who he really was with his gentle strength, open-heartedness, wit and vulnerability. You helped him become more accepting of himself and others, and he became a better person through connecting and working with you.
I want to express my deep gratitude to all who were part of John's Haven experiences. He wished that everyone could do at least one Come Alive; therefore donations to the Haven Foundation Learning Person to Person bursary fund in memory of John will be welcomed."
Thank you to the many generous people who have already made donations in John's memory. For more information on donating to Haven Foundation, please go to our web site or call Rachel on 1-877-247-9238 extension 235.
