The Haven News Update, Vol 6, Issue 5
March,2007

Remembering Joann Peterson
Saturday June 23, 1:00 - 3:00pm at The Haven
Joann Laughing Friends and family of Joann Peterson will gather to celebrate her life at The Haven on Saturday June 23 2007. All of us here at The Haven are preparing to welcome those of you who can come. Many people have contributed ideas and Cathy and Ernie McNally have played a key role in collecting these and contributing to the design of the day. We also want to acknowledge and appreciate Scott Poole and Laurie Kelley for their generous support in making this celebration a reality.

On June 23 we will gather in the Phoenix Auditorium from 1:00-2:00 and then (weather permitting) move outside to the front lawn from 2:00-3:00, when there will be an "open mic" opportunity for anyone who would like to share their thoughts and feelings about Joann. Refreshments will be provided.

Joann's Garden photo Joann loved her garden on the deck of Kingfisher and all the gardens at The Haven. Don Mattson, The Haven's gardener and a very close friend of Joann's, honoured her life by creating a garden dedicated to her memory. This was no easy process - Don ended up using a crowbar to smash through layers of rock. Having to work so hard to find the beauty was so much "Joann's way" and was a powerful reminder for Don of his own process and learning… I kept hearing her voice in my head - don't give up or in, just keep going at it, there is no easy way Don, keep on, get to the core of the issue, persevere…

The next time you are here, take a moment to enjoy this space - you will find the garden next to the grape arbour, on the left of the path that runs up to Raven past the swimming pool.

This is a busy time of year at The Haven and unfortunately we are already fully booked on June 22/23. There are several options for you to consider in Nanaimo and on Gabriola, please check the links below.

http://nanaimo.travel.bc.ca/accommodations/

We have very limited parking space so would ask that you avoid bringing your car if at all possible. We will be organizing pick-up and drop-offs to the Ferry.

We will be sending out a News Update special around June 10 with final information and logistical details.

We know that many friends of Joann will not be able to attend this celebration. As a way of connecting and sharing in the spirit of the day, we are inviting people to host a gathering on the same day in other locations. If you would like to play host to others, please contact Rachel at programs(at)haven.ca by May 31st. Part of doing this would include having your contact details published in the News Update special edition in early June.

We need to know if you are coming! This will help us to effectively organize the day. Please RSVP by May 31st to this email address joannRSVP(at)haven.ca if you are intending to come, and let us know if there are others who will be coming with you.

Haven Faces
Welcome to our new Executive Director John Shields photo
We are very happy to announce that after a long selection process and thoughtful deliberation, The Haven Foundation Board has appointed a new Executive Director for The Haven. The Executive Director is the key organizational link between the Foundation Board and the Management of The Haven. We are delighted to welcome John Shields to our team. Here are a few words from John about his background to briefly introduce himself.

I began my own inner development work at a Come Alive with Ben and Jock when they were still at Cold Mountain, and did other workshops with them on Cortes and Gabriola. I have always considered myself part of The Haven community, even though I haven't been actively involved for a number of years. I applied for the position because I have the highest regard for The Haven, and wanted to contribute to its continuing development.

As a Social Work supervisor in Victoria, where I have lived since 1969, I first developed my administrative capacity. My executive skills and abilities were developed as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the BC Government and Service Employees Union (BCGEU). I was elected to that office seven times for a fourteen-year tenure. I stepped down in 1999 to become the full time care giver for my late wife during her terminal illness.

After a long period of intensely private work as a care giver I have begun to restore balance to my life. I have been working on several non-profit boards, including the Well Foundation, which recently sponsored the first national conference on men's health. I have been writing a book about new cosmology and spirituality and have been facilitating a weekly group for men who are exploring spirituality. And most importantly to me, I have married Robin June Hood. I am ready for a new challenge and am energized about becoming the Executive Director at The Haven.

New Courses and Credits
We are always on the lookout for exciting new courses to extend the range of our offerings at The Haven, and for ways to make it easier for people to come here. So we are delighted to announce of the following new courses and continuing education credits.

Register for any of our courses today, online at www.haven.ca or contact our registrars by email at registrar(at)haven.ca or by phone on 1-877-247-9238 extension 234.

19 and Beyond
Linda Nicholls and David Raithby will lead 19 and Beyond for the first time on August 26-29 2007. 19 and Beyond is a course aimed at young adults, beginning a new and challenging phase of their lives. It offers participants opportunities to learn more about human nature and how to move beyond obstacles where they may be stuck, afraid, confused or frustrated. If you are in the 19-25 age group, come and find out more about how to get what you want out of life - you can enjoy being with people your own age, have fun, and expand your horizons.

19 and Beyond came into being in response to the popularity and consistently strong attendance at Teens Alive and the obvious need for courses for young people experiencing the vital, transitional time beyond age 19, who are too old for Teens Alive. David and Linda's desire is to create a forum for young people to share their concerns, have an opportunity to learn the skills they need during these years, and experience camaraderie, exchange and feedback with people of their own age. Earlybird tuition for 19 and Beyond is $436.

We are pleased to announce two new additions to our 2007 schedule and to introduce new members of our Faculty.

Horse Wisdom
Deborah Marshall photoBecome a better human in the reflection of a horse. The Haven has always been about connection - connection with yourself, with nature, spirit and the people around you. This summer at The Haven, you will have the chance to experience your connection with horses, and through this to learn more about yourself. Horse Wisdom is a course which offers the opportunity to develop congruence and open your heart in a series of carefully designed experiences with the Generation Farms herd. You can expect to leave feeling more yourself, in touch with your body, and aware of others in a whole new way. No previous horse experience is necessary. All work will be unmounted and you can choose your level of horse contact. The group will be restricted to a maximum of twelve participants, so make sure you register early!

Horse Wisdom will be offered at Haven and at Deborah Marshall's Nanaimo farm on August 17-20 2007. Transport between the two locations is provided and transport costs are included in the tuition fee ($560 Earlybird). We are delighted to have Deborah join us to offer this wonderful and unique course. Deborah is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and has had a private counseling practice since 1988, specializing in trauma resolution, dealing with depression and anxiety, and recovery from injury and illness. Through her life long contact with horses, she realized the healing possibilities these noble and loving creatures offer to people. Her unique approach combines somatic therapy and mindfulness with the Epona approach to horse/human relationship. For more information about Deborah's work, visit her web site www.generationfarms.ca

Body, Self and Soul: An introduction to Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP) Gary and Judith Fewster Photo
At Haven, the concept of integrated and embodied learning has been the basis for our courses for over twenty years. We continue to present students new and old with a variety of intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual experiences. We are delighted to offer another opportunity for you to continue to explore with us.

IBP (Integrative Body Psychotherapy) is a complete system of psychotherapy that combines verbal work with breath and bodywork for the systematic integration of body, mind, emotions and spirit. IBP is a gentle and powerful way of confronting one's deepest patterns that are located in the body and unconsciously control our lives. This course provides an introduction to IBP and will be of interest to anyone who is seeking more awareness and aliveness in their personal lives and relationships.

Judith and Gerry Fewster, PhD are senior psychotherapists and educators who administer and direct the Pacific NorthWest IBP Institute in BC. As Executive Director and senior IBP teacher, Judith combines private practice with the supervision of students, therapists and teachers at all levels. Gerry is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at the University of Calgary. He has published five books and countless articles on mental health and relationship issues - including the biography Ben and Jock. Judith and Gerry have been leading seminars in somatic psychotherapy across North America for many years. Working together as a couple, the Fewsters practice their own unique brand of couples therapy.

The course is offered at The Haven on October 5-7 and November 9-11 2007. The Earlybird tuition fee is $295. For more information about IBP go to www.ibponline.com

Continuing Education Credits
Last month we told you about our ongoing efforts in getting courses approved for Continuing Education Credits. We have successfully added two more. Effective Boundaries and Burnout to Balance (Setting Boundaries in the Workplace) have both been approved by the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC www.cmtbc.bc.ca) and Addictions: Choiceful Transformation has been approved by the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF www.caccf.ca)

Preapproval of credits mean that members of some professional organizations requiring Continuing Education, can come to a course and know that credit will be given for their attendance.

Faculty Focus:
Ernie and Cathy Mcnally
Cathy and Ernie Photo Since leaving the management of The Haven, Cathy and Ernie McNally have been blessed with good fortune, good friends and good will; being and working with people in a host of rich and rewarding settings.

As members of Core Faculty they are involved in several courses at The Haven. They will again co-lead Phase I this October after thoroughly enjoying leading their first Phase I together last fall. This summer they will lead their fourth Relationships course since taking over from Ben and Jock. Cathy and Ernie will also be teaming up for two Come Alives in the summer of 2008. Their Addictions: Choiceful Transformation course, co-led with Wendy Huntington, has been approved for twelve core CEUs (Continuing Education Credits) by the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation.

With their time again more flexible, Cathy and Ernie have been enjoying several of their personal passions. They have been landscaping their home, catching up on writing, spending time with friends and family, and travelling-most recently to the Yucatan Peninsula, San Francisco and Roatan, Honduras. Their life and relationship learnings continue to provide abundant grist for new course ideas, some to be offered at The Haven, with others already being presented in communities outside the BC Lower Mainland. They have also found more opportunities to offer one of their favourite ways of being with couples: individual Couples Intensives in their home.

In addition to their work together, Cathy is the Chairperson of The Haven Faculty Committee; she co-leads Effective Boundaries with Wendy and Come Alive with Jane Olynyk, and has been assisting Maria Gomori in her Journey to Self series. Last December Ernie began writing music again with his brother Steve, this time with a very personal slant. Where their focus in the past had been on the commercial market, they now are writing commissioned personal songs for individuals, couples, friends and groups. The response has been tremendous, and there are plans for an album of their music to be released this summer. You can email Ernie at info(at)beebrothersmusic.com for more information about their personal songs project.

Saying Goodbye
Randy Gibbons photo We are very sad to announce that Randy Gibbons recently passed away. Here, Ernie McNally shares his memories of Randy.

Randy Gibbons was a vital participant in many courses at The Haven; from his first Come Alive and Phase I in the late 90s to his September 2006 Come Alive with Ben and Jock. What he found at The Haven was consistent with how he chose to live-relational, dynamic, loving and very alive, with liberal dollops of humanness and humour.

When Randy learned last summer that he had an inoperable cancer he decided to open, more than he ever had, to the world around him. He did so with a passionate desire to live every moment with tender, vulnerable courage. From that day, until he left this earth April 2, 2007, Randy gave and received in ways that have indelibly left their mark. There were times when he was fearless, and times when he was afraid; times when he was determined, and times he was uncertain; times he was openly engaged, and times he was quietly pulled in; times of ageless wisdom, and times of childlike naivety; times of exhilaration and frustration.

In all his ways of being, Randy made room for, and invited people to come together. His friends and family responded with a spirit that permeated the air around him, fostering many heartfelt tears-tears borne from deep-bellied laughter, tender remembering, and present-moment thanks. Randy seemed clear that his already precious life became more so every day, and he treasured the abundant gifts each day offered. On the afternoon of April 2, Randy closed his eyes and moved on, surrounded by his greatest gift of all, the loving warmth of his wife Kellee, his sons Jake and Wyatt, close friends and family. See you later Randy.

Haven Happenings
INTAR Conference
From May 5-9, The Haven was host to an international gathering of dissident psychiatrists, psychologists, and advocates working to promote non-medical alternatives to traditional psychiatric treatment. This was the third meeting of the International Network Toward Alternatives and Recovery, INTAR, following successful conferences in 2003 in the U.S. and in 2005 in Ireland.

The INTAR gathering was brought to us by one of our alumni and Senior Interns, Gisela Sartori. The invitation-only experience brought people together to discuss innovative projects and new initiatives, as well as to connect with seasoned experts and theoreticians. This year's meeting included participants from Windhorse Associates, connected to Naropa University, some of the founders and leaders of the orginial Soteria project, a leader in the 1970s and 80s in non-medical alternatives, as well as colleagues of RD Laing who remain involved in the Philadelphia Association in London.

The conference at The Haven was especially productive, with participants deciding to transform INTAR from an informal forum for sharing information, to an international non governmental organisation that will promote and support the development and operation of recovery-based alternatives.

Gisela shares her thoughts on having the conference at The Haven. "The meeting's forty participants found The Haven an excellent place to connect in a relaxing and supportive setting. The Haven staff were very helpful and the environment made the experience especially enriching. The setting also provided some unique opportunities, with David Raithby of The Haven speaking at INTAR's first evening session, and a well-received performance by Anthony Holland's Theatre Centre (Anthony is a well-known Gabriola based international actor).

Considering a conference or business meeting? Please contact Louise Amuir at conference(at)haven.ca, call on 1-877-247-9238 ext. 222 or visit www.haven.ca.

Haven Behind the Scenes
Maintenance and Housekeeping photoA lot is going on behind the scenes here at The Haven, keeping Xanon and his maintenance team and Nellie and her housekeepers busy. Here's what's new this season at The Haven. We expect most of the changes to be completed by early July or sooner.

TWO NEW SUITES - Kingfisher second and third floors are being renovated into two new 2 bedroom suites (one with a full kitchen), each with a great ocean view.

NEW GYM - For fitness enthusiasts, the gym is moving to where the indoor pool used to be. We hope you will enjoy a great work out with our new gym equipment. New Gym Machine photo

NEW WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE SUITE - The old gym and sauna in Eagleview is being converted into a suite which will provide all the comfort and facilities needed by a person in a wheelchair, with a stunning ocean view. New intern training rooms are also being created in this building.

ROOMS - Very soon all the beds will have new bedding and some rooms will have new carpet, paint and drapes, following our new decorating scheme. The 'new look' can be seen in rooms 142, 107, 108, 152 bedroom and the new Kingfisher and Eagleview suites.

THE HAVEN STORE - Whether taking a course or visiting The Haven as a resort guest, indulgence often means a little side trip to our store. From journals to jewelry, small extravagances to convenience items….this season you'll find some pleasant changes that you're sure to enjoy. Sandra, one of our front desk team, has been working hard to make the store even more fabulous.

The store has always offered our much sought after books and we continue to expand the store to reflect who we are and where we live. We want to provide our guests with quality items from our community, and look for ways to represent the local artists and craftsmen of Gabriola Island. Nearly half of our stock comes from Gabriola and we are actively working to increase that percentage. We are committed to providing organic products - such as our teas, coffee, chocolate and world famous Haven Granola - and we are going to be offering more items that originate from recycled materials.

At The Haven, we believe that a committed and conscious effort whether for personal development or the betterment of our precious environment is truly a worthwhile endeavor. Please drop by The Haven Store the next time you are here….there really is something for everyone. We think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

And remember, you can buy books, DVDs and even granola online - go to www.haven.ca and click on Store.
