New Beds at The Haven
There is a time for many words, and there is also a time for sleep. Homer

The Haven is a place of many words, experiences and feelings – however you have told us that it's not a great place for sleep. Here are some responses to the question 'How can we make your stay more comfortable next time?' from one course:

'Better beds/bed linens.'
'New beds and bedding.'
'A mattress that does not roll downhill to the middle!'

So we are delighted to let you know that the next time you come to The Haven you will be sleeping on a brand new Serta ‘Perfect Sleeper’ mattress and box spring bed. In addition, all double and twin beds are now extra long, the same length as a standard queen. There are now nine rooms that have state-of-the-art Aerus Memory Foam mattresses.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors and continuing fundraising efforts, we were able to replace all the beds at the same time – more than 80 in total. There was no sleeping on the job for our Maintenance and Housekeeping departments, who completed the change over in just two days – thanks to Xanon, Nellie and their hardworking teams.

We already have new sheets, pillowcases and blankets for the beds and plan to replace the pillows, comforters and bedspreads before the peak season begins in July.

We appreciate your feedback and continue to listen to your suggestions. This is an exciting time of change and renewal and we are looking forward to your next visit with us – when we are confident you will sleep better.

Staying Alive in your Community
Many of you who come to courses at The Haven want ideas on how to take what you have learned back into your daily lives. The Staying Alive groups are a wonderful way to continue practicing the communication model closer to home.

The Staying Alive groups are led by Haven graduates and offer the opportunity to connect with other like minded people, continue working on individual issues and learn from each other.
There are Stay Alive groups in nine different communities in Canada and the US. Most are open only to people who have done at least one course at Haven – while others include spouses or other like minded people. Costs are set by the individual Stay Alive leader so check with them for details.

Giving Heart-to-Heart
In 2006 alone our Learning Person-to-Person fund gave nearly $60,000 in bursaries to individuals who would not have been able to come to The Haven without the generosity of our donors. We received this letter from a bursary recipient and want to share it to show the impact that giving from the heart can have on another person's life.

Dear Donors of The Haven Foundation

I was recently a recipient of The Haven Foundation to attend a Come Alive session. I wanted to express unconditionally the friendships that have blossomed, the support group I have established and the inner strength I have gained by going to a five day session.

I have been able to gain tools to effectively support myself in my life. OK, so you might wonder, all this in five days? Yes! Every day was a challenge and every day was a positive experience I will surely never forget. I walked away a different person, who could absorb all the Haven had to offer. I came home and wanted to tell everyone I knew about it but didn’t have to because they saw a huge change in me. I became more open to communication, understanding the dynamics of my relationships with regards to my boundaries and my involvement and how to deal with my emotions and not taking on anyone else’s. I became responsible for me and no one else. That was both uplifting and challenging.

I have been through much hardship, as many have, in my life and was worried my financial situation would prevent the guidance I needed to get through this hardship. Thankfully, the Haven offered financial support in order for me to attend, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to go. The Haven is a life-changing experience for me and has allowed me to be challenged and gain the tools to deal with my own feelings and connections with other people. It allowed me most importantly to let go of my past and help rebuild for the future. I am forever grateful and am looking forward to going to the Come Alive 2.

I walked away with so much and am a better person for it. The warmth and kindness of the staff to just want you to be there to experience it is so positive and genuine.

Thank you for making this possible, it would have not been without your donations. You have touched my heart deeply.

Joann Peterson
In January we sent out a special edition of the Haven News Update with the sad news that Joann Peterson passed away on January 10, 2007.

Celebration of Joann's Life – June 23, 2007
A celebration of Joann's life will take place at The Haven on June 23 from 1:00 – 3:00pm We would love to welcome you to remember Joann at The Haven – and we anticipate a high turn out at a time when accommodation is limited. For this reason we would also like to hold ceremonies in other locations at the same time – if anyone is interested in coordinating these 'offsite' events anywhere in the world (and the blog shows just how far Joann's Haven 'family' is scattered), please contact Cathy & Ernie at joannsmemorial@shaw.ca.

Joann’s Courses
We know that Joann wanted her courses to continue at The Haven. We are working hard to make this happen and have so far only had to cancel one course, Disengaging Depression (March 9–14). We hope that all the other courses that Joann was scheduled to lead or co-lead will go ahead this year as scheduled.

Joann's Blog
Thank you for all the wonderful postings on Joann's blog http://joannpetersonmemorial.blogspot.com The blog will close at the end of February. If you want to know how to post, go to http://www.haven.ca and click on the link ‘Remembering Joann Peterson’. A book commemorating Joann’s life will be created from the blog and shared with Joann’s family.

Heartfelt thanks for the generosity of those who have honoured Joann’s life by donating to the Learning Person-to-Person bursary fund in her memory – these donations will be designated towards those following or wishing to follow the intern path at The Haven.

Faculty Committee
The first ever Haven Faculty Committee was created at a Faculty meeting on January 27. The first three members of what will be a five person committee are Cathy McNally (chair), Wayne Dodge and Carole Ames.

The Haven faculty consists of some sixty individuals with a rich and diverse range of talent and passion. They reside across Canada, in the USA and even internationally. The new committee is charged with facilitating the communication and coordination amongst this group, as well as working closely with the Programs Director and Director of Education, to support ongoing development of our faculty, our courses, and The Haven as a whole.

Finally…
For anyone who has received a copy of the recent Shen Newsletter please note there was a printing error on the course schedule on the back page. The Phase I course appears three times as Phase I Self-Compassion – this should read Phase I Self-Awareness. The Self-Compassion course, led by Wayne Dodge and Gwen Ewan, will run from 15-18 November. Go tohttp://haven.ca/db/a.courseDetail/id.22 to find the course description.

As many of you no doubt realized, the Shen was printed before Joann passed away – for information on courses which Joann led and co-led, see above and in later News Updates.

Wendy Huntington , a member of The Haven's Core Faculty, is currently recovering from very successful surgery. Wendy would like to thank all those who have been so supportive of her over the last few weeks and looks forward to being back at The Haven in March.

There will be no Phase II in August 2007 as we are taking the opportunity to review and revise this course. The next Phase II is now scheduled for March 2008. Please contact The Haven Registrars for further information – by email at registrar@haven.ca or by phone 1-877-247-9238 ext. 234.

Do you have a friend, family member or co-worker who might be interested in receiving this monthly news from The Haven? They can sign up on our web site using this link http://haven.ca/us/update/index.html or send their email address (editor@haven.ca) and we will send them the Update, saying it was from you.
