Special Edition—
Haven’s Third International Symposium

C-ing The Future: Caring, Chaos, Connection
In the summer of 2003 David Raithby’s ever-creative mind spawned the concept of bringing people together to listen, ask, discover, discuss, and most of all, connect. In the response to David’s idea the seed for the first Symposium was planted.

SFU Downtown photoFrom the first gathering in 2003, with the dynamic insights of Dr Norm Shealy, to the second with the ageless wisdom of Joseph Chilton Pearce, to the coming event with the visionary passions of Dr Margaret Wheatley, each Symposium has been fueled by a communal spirit brought to life by The Haven staff and volunteers who meticulously dot and cross every letter of the teamwork alphabet. These hard-working souls set the stage for the members of our faculty who present thought-full and heart-filled sessions that create the opportunities for questions and conversations from the remaining vital component of the event—you! Your participation, feedback and suggestions, are a significant contribution to what these events have become.

This year the Friday evening keynote will be at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver, and we will be returning to the Simon Fraser University Harbour Centre Campus for the Saturday panel and presentations.

The Haven Symposium 2006 is entitled C-ing The Future: Caring, Chaos, Connection. Beginning with the Friday evening keynote to the Saturday morning panel and the afternoon sessions, every presentation will take its own inimitable look at where we are going and what resources we have in our grasp to shape the future we want. These two days will be a unique opportunity to learn from, and contribute to, a memorable event.Join us for a chance to:
  • Hear and meet Dr Margaret ‘Meg’ Wheatley, a remarkable woman at the forefront of weaving relationship into the fabric of the communities we are creating.
  • Listen, ask, ponder and respond during a two-hour panel discussion/conversation with Meg and members of our faculty.
  • Pause to enjoy a superb lunch and chat with old friends and new acquaintances
  • Re-visit familiar and explore yet-to-be-considered possibilities during innovative and interactive presentations that broach a host of styles and topics
  • Share your ideas and experiences, in and out of sessions, in a casual and stimulating environment
  • Bring friends who may be interested in learning more about The Haven
  • Sit back, relax, take it all in and have fun!
As you read more in this Special Edition Update, hopefully you will share some of our excitement as we imagine what is to come April 7 and 8.We are keenly aware that the fundamental key to making all of this happen is your support and participation.Read on, phone in, and register today!

Whatever the Question, Community is the Answer—
Meg Wheatley's Keynote Address

Meg Wheatley photoIf you have visited Meg Wheatley’s website, read her articles or books, or had the good fortune to hear her speak, you have some idea what is in store for Friday evening at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver. This brilliant and sensitive woman has much to say and much to offer about the times we live in, the environment we have created and the endless possibilities in our grasp when we accept the “chaotic order” of a relational world.

In her keynote, entitled Whatever the Question, Community is the Answer, Meg will look at how we cope with increasing uncertainty and fear, and that people dealing with hardships in many places have discovered what our western culture has failed to notice—as long as we're together, we can get through anything.

“In our culture, many dynamics keep us apart; our focus on individualism, our belief that only the strong survive, and the increased speed at which we live,” say Wheatley, “It is time for us to notice how we drive us apart with these dynamics, and to become active in restoring our relationships, communities, and families. If we lead this revolution, we will be capable of dealing with all of life's surprises.”

The March issue of Common Ground Magazine features an article with Margaret Wheatley, which you may find very interesting...and may well whet your appetite to come spend some time with her at the Symposium.Go to http://www.commonground.ca/iss/0603176/cg176_wheatley.shtml for the article.

There’s the tip...come explore the rest of the iceberg Friday, April 7, Saturday April 8, in Vancouver.

Face-to-Face, Heart-to-Heart, Question-to-Answer
Linda Nicholls photoSaturday morning, April 8, the Symposium moves to the Simon Fraser University Harbour Centre Campus. The day begins with something new this year, a two-hour opportunity for everyone to participate in an open-mic discussion with moderator/host Linda Nicholls, Meg Wheatley and The Haven Faculty members Catherine Fallis, Rick Jackson, and David Raithby. The rules are there are no rules other than asking and listening with consideration!

The discussion, entitled Taking Charge of Tomorrow Today will focus on our individual and communal role in creating our world. What can we do right now? How do we move from talk to action? How do we make room for each and all? What can we learn from our past and present? This promises to be a surprising, personal and engaging experience—bring your ideas, questions, ears and heart!
