The Haven welcomes Rachel Davey
Rachel Davey photoA very warm welcome to Rachel – Rachel has arrived from the United Kingdom to take up her position as Program Director. Some words from Rachel:

"I am really delighted to finally arrive in Canada after what seems like a very long wait. The immigration process has been a protracted and at times frustrating one, and we are all glad to be at the end of it. I'm really excited at the prospect of taking up my new job. I've been coming to courses at the Haven since 2001 and I don't know of any other place or people capable
of giving me the gift of understanding myself that The Haven has. It seems funny to be in this position now, when I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to my first Come Alive - thanks to the creative skills of The Haven faculty (in that case, Gwen and Wayne), I was converted. As many of you know, I am here with my family - Toby, my husband, and my two children
Rory and Ismay (known to all as Izzy). We are all looking forward to a new life and lots of pleasure to come. Having lived in lots of different countries (England, Cyprus, Egypt, Czech Republic to name a few) it's great to finally find a place that we can call home."

Farewell to Gill Robillard
Gill Robillard, one of our four managing Directors, (Development and Marketing) will be leaving the Haven on December 31, 2006. Together with her husband Paul, Gill will be increasing her professional activities and commitments in Vancouver in 2007 and the lengthy commute back to Gabriola will make it impossible for her to continue in this full-time position at the Haven. The Robillards will continue to be a feature of Gabriola life however as they will keep their home on our magical Island.

Gill has been instrumental in establishing and building our donor relationships since the first days of the Foundation and her energy, professionalism and experience will be deeply missed by Foundation Directors and staff. More recently, as a part of the management team Gill has also taken on responsibility for marketing. Once again Gill forged new pathways for the Haven to follow in promoting ourselves in the world and in attracting those participants in our courses and programs.

Interested?
The Haven is inviting "expressions of interest" in the Director of Development and Marketing position. This is a management position and a proven management/business background in a residential setting is preferable. The candidate will need to have a background in fundraising and marketing for non-profits, strong interpersonal skills and efficient time management skills. Experience with Haven courses as either a participant or faculty is desirable. This is a full-time position situated at our site on Gabriola Island B.C. Expressions of interest (including a CV) should be sent to the Executive Director via email to: resume.dirdevelopment@haven.ca by December 15, 2006. Because of administrative constraints only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Further details of the job description can be viewed at http://haven.ca/us/jobs.html.

Gwen Ewan - Acting Director of Education
Joann Peterson's Haven friends continue to cheer on her recovery from heart surgery last August. Although the process is slower than we had hoped, Joann is improving steadily with the loving support of her husband Pete, her children and grandchildren, and her Haven family.

While Joann is away, we are fortunate to have Gwen Ewan available to take on Joann's duties as Director of Education. In addition to various other degrees and certifications, Gwen has a Diploma in Counselling from The Haven. She has worked in one aspect or another of staff development, education for professionals, mental health or addictions for over 30 years, and has been leading Come Alive and other courses at The Haven since 1991. Gwen will be working closely with our new Program Director, Rachel Davey, around the intern Certificate and Diploma programs and the Haven Institute "core courses". We are delighted to have her skills and experience supporting the students and programs of The Haven. She can be reached through the registrars office or at gewan(at)telus.net.

The Haven’s Education Master Plan
The Education Committee, chaired by Connie Munro and with committee members Derek LaCroix, Gwen Ewan, Marlyn Farrell, and Rick Jackson, have prepared a discussion paper leading up to the development of an Education Master Plan for The Haven. This process began back in May 2006 and the discussion paper is intended to provide a framework for debate about the future educational direction of The Haven. As part of this process, faculty members and students (current and past) of The Haven have been invited to give feedback on the document via a blog and a survey. The feedback collected will be collated and analyzed in November, with the help of The Haven's new Director of Programs, Rachel Davey, for presentation at the December Board meeting. We will keep you posted on this exciting development at The Haven.

Faculty Faces
Elfi Dillon-Shaw, RMT, and Gary Dillon, MA, MTR

Elfi Dillon-Shaw photoElfi has been a massage therapist for twenty-five years, most in residence at The Haven. In addition to training in massage therapy, Elfi evolved a unique approach to bodywork drawing from Shiatsu, Zero-balancing, Craniosacral therapy, and therapeutic exercise. She is a faculty member with the Body Electric School, which offers workshops, retreats and training in the area of adult sexual balance and healing. Her special interest is in helping clients to experience their body-mind-spirit connection and to promote a relational way of life. She fosters experiences of pleasure, joy and wellness through acceptance of ourselves as embodied beings.

Garry Dillon PhotoGary draws on twenty-five years experience as dance therapist, movement and performance coach, teacher of improvisation, and Lomilomi massage. He also brings to The Haven a background of hands-on study of Hawaiian Huna and neo-shamanism generally, Tibetan Buddhism, and tantric transformations of sexuality. He is a founding member of "TMT," a troupe of dancers and actors dedicated to creating performance pieces to publicly inspire commitment to healing on a personal and communal level.

Gary and Elfi have been in relationship for nine years, building a life together, welcoming grandchildren, and offering workshops at The Haven. For six years they have offered "Awakening Your Erotic Body," a course designed so that each person, whether partnered or not, can discover for themselves deeper springs of satisfaction and self-acceptance of erotic energy. They believe that an erotic life is one in which bodily life—sensation, pulsation, arousal, rhythm and movement, feeling and emotion—are embraced and given priority. In November they offer a new workshop designed for couples, "For Play," with emphasis on enlivenment and mutuality in erotic discovery with a partner. Elfi also leads a workshop of self discovery for women, "Stirring the Cauldron."

Reflecting on Reflections
Since The Haven was founded by Ben & Jock almost 25 years ago, it has been about people; all of us and each of us, however different, drawn by a spirit of relating, buoyed by a shared desire to learn through connection and grow through reflection. Nothing expresses the heart of The Haven better than Reflections. This special 5-day tradition (December 28 to January 1) offers everyone an opportunity to speak and listen with honest open hearts, reflecting and connecting on what has been, what is now, and what is to come.

However you have experienced your year 2006 we invite you to be here for Reflections with Ben & Jock, Cathy & Ernie McNally, and a host of old friends and soon-to-be new friends. Come and add your voice and ears to stimulating, engaging morning-session conversations; afternoons that range from quiet naps to tango lessons and potato cannon creations; evenings filled with all kinds of magic (real and imagined!). This annual event is crowned by a New Years Eve and morning that capture the care and connection—with liberal sprinklings of joy and laughter—that has made this year-end-beginning legendary.

If you have been part of Reflections-past, you likely have your own collection of great stories and treasured connections. And if you have not, let this be the year you look back on as the first of many Reflections to come! Visit The Haven website via this link to register: http://haven.ca/db/a.courseDetail/id.55

A new mantelpiece for the fireplacemantle photo
A very warm thank you to Paul Arnold. Paul and his friend, Tim, have spent months working on creating a beautiful new mantelpiece for the fireplace which is in the sitting room in the Lodge. The mantelpiece was created from driftwood which Paul found on the beach. This beautifully handcrafted mantelpiece has been donated to The Haven. Paul, we are so appreciative of your caring, craftsmanship and ongoing contribution to The Haven – thank you!.

A heart-warming testimonial from a bursary recipient
Due to our donors generosity and their spirit of giving, we are privileged to be able to grant bursaries to people in need. We recently received a testimonial from a bursary recipient which we would love to share with you:

"I am writing to express my sincere appreciation to the donors of The Haven Foundation. I want each donor to know that his / her donation's do reach people in need.

As a parent, and a fiercely independent one, I was humbled and challenged to receive the bursary my children needed in order to attend Denise's Dance and Games for Kids program.

The program, for each of my children, was healing, insightful and challenging. Under Denise's skill and guidance, my children thought they were just having fun. Without the Haven Foundation donors, my children could not have attended the program and that would have been an incredible loss.

I send a huge thank you to the donors who have helped my children to heal their early hurts which in turn frees them to go forward with their hearts a little lighter and their heads held a little higher.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you." Name withheld by request.
As we approach Christmas, and the time of thinking about others less fortunate than ourselves, and reflect back on the year with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for what we do have in our lives, we ask that you join us to take a moment to consider supporting our bursary fund, Learning Person-to-Person. Should you wish to do so, please call Gill at 247-9211 ext 238 or go to our website and click the "Contribute" button on the top of any page.
