Look Who's Coming Back to The Haven

Look who's coming back to the Haven in November...Bill O'Hanlon! Last year we were thrilled to have Bill with us and so were many participants who attended his courses here. He's back with two new courses:

Bill is a psychotherapist who was a developer of Solution-Oriented Therapy and a founder of Possibility and Inclusive Therapies. He is known for his storytelling, irreverent humor, clear and accessible presentation style and his enthusiasm for whatever he is doing. He has recently shifted his focus to writing (now authored or co-authored 23 books ) teaching and coaching people to discover what their lives on the planet are about, what contributions they have to make and how to overcome barriers to expressing that contribution successfully. You can also go to his website to learn more about Bill www.billohanlon.com

Jock McKeen celebrates his 60th!

In September, during the Come Alive led by Ben & Jock, a large group of friends of The Haven, board members and participants gathered for a momentous occasion as Jock received his surprise (early) birthday cake lovingly made by Louise Amuir. We decided to celebrate Jock's birthday at this time as The Haven was filled to capacity...a perfect time for a celebration. His "real" birthday falls on the 19th of this month and in recognition of this we wanted to share the news with our readers and a wonderful and heart-felt message that Ben has written for Jock.

TO JOCK - ON HIS SIXTIETH BIRTHDAY

Dear Jock:

Welcome to the ranks of us "Senior Citizens!" Perhaps now you will be able understand my indignation over your reference to my Chinese "Longevity herbs" as my "Old Man Pills!"

But on reflection, maybe you won't. I see little evidence of your submitting to an aging process. I was initially skeptical of your commencing ballet lessons in your early fifties. But you have persisted in your weekly lessons and your daily two hours of practice, exercises and dance! As a result, your body has been immortalized in the sculptures for which you posed and which now reside in art galleries and halls around Canada and China! You are succeeding to beat back Father Time with nothing more than diligence and ballet slippers!

As you enter these "Twilight Years", instead of becoming more relaxed and dormant, you are becoming more lithe, more flexible and more graceful in your manner, mien and mentation. You are succeeding in your current task of integrating what you know about Holistic Health and harmony between Eastern and Western philosophies. You have grown far beyond what we laughingly referred to as just another "pretty face." Your beauty is manifesting as substance in the context of your love.

I look forward to sharing with you not the years of twilight but rather, decades of illumination! You might even try my "Old Man" pills! In the words of Dylan Thomas:

"Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

With love, and Happy Birthday,

Ben.

The Haven Away

For many years The Haven Institute has been teaching courses in locations around the world. It seems that our ideas, concepts and ways of teaching have universal appeal, regardless of culture, language or geographic location. During the last year Carole Ames has managed the planning and coordination of our international activities in many countries, including Kenya. In September Linda Nicholls and David Raithby co-led an extremely well-received Come Alive for the management team of a China-based high-tech company in Kenya's capital city of Nairobi. They were ably assisted by Leslie Whyte, Sean Feng, Donna Lee and YaFang Sun. Congratulations! Several of our Haven Faculty have been abroad this past year delivering Come Alive courses

Faculty Faces

Wendy Huntington, Ph.D., M.A., LMFT, Dip.C., CDS III

Wendy was born in Los Angelos, California and moved to her present home of Lakewood, Washington in 1963. She lives a very active professional and personal life which includes spending time with her five beautiful grandchildren. A lover of the creative arts, Wendy considers her personal journey to be enhanced through her passion of diverse expressive media including dance and fabric arts. Wendy started out slowly with her dancing as she always felt so shy; and even when at Haven she would never dance before session. She credits Ben Wong in asking her to share a waltz with him once at the start of a session as the stepping forward into her passion. She now dances five classes a week and has been in several competitions, winning many first places in her class. Next on her list of creative things to accomplish is the creation of her own integrated personal and professional website.

Wendy leads several of The Haven Institute's proprietary courses in addition to presenting courses she designs with other Haven faculty. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist, specializing in addictions, group facilitation and teaching and she leads Stay Alive groups for Women in Seattle and Olympia. She will be leading the 'Addictions: Choiceful Transformations' course at The Haven with Cathy and Ernie McNally at the end of October and will be with us for most of November co-leading 'Phase II' with Gwen Ewan. We hope you will have a chance to meet Wendy when you are here!

UpComing Courses

Joann's Healing Journey continues...
We have been appreciating receiving updates from Wendy Huntington on Joann and wanted to share the most recent with you -- "Joann and Pete have been enjoying their time together, notice daily progress and are pleased. She's UP and moving each day; aiding her regaining of strength, she rigorously does what she calls her "Wimpy Workout" each day, which consists of 20 minutes of seated leg lifts, followed by arm flexes with weights (in the form of cans of "whatever is in the kitchen"). Her finger muscles are re-strengthening by key-tapping on her computer (and they still tire easily, for those of you who haven't had answers to your emails yet). Joann says she feels VERY warm and cared for, with all the notes, thoughts and wishes that come her way and is grateful for the contact, since she misses all her students and colleagues. She also says to tell everyone that she is passionate about returning to teaching as soon as she is able, and holds that as her anchor when she gets discouraged during the times when recuperation doesn't happen as quickly as she'd like."

Thinking ahead about Reflections

Join us at The Haven and be part of The Haven's New Year tradition!

Reflections is not really a course in the traditional sense of The Haven's courses. It's more of an event, a flow of connection, a gathering, a happening...with old and new friends sharing the year's closing days with relaxation, celebration, music, variety and fun! The morning sessions are flexibly-structured opportunities to engage with others in active group discussions. A range of current topics and ideas are discussed with plenty of reflection time for looking back at personal events and accomplishments, taking stock of today, and looking ahead. The afternoons and evenings offer time for you to enjoy quietly and/or to be involved in a host of participant-led activities. New Year's Eve is celebrated with a variety show that defies description and allows for the talented and not so talented to get involved, it is followed by a gathering at the lodge with music, dance and the joy of heart-felt connections.

This year Reflections will be hosted by Ernie and Cathy McNally and Ben Wong and Jock McKeen. We hope you will join us....these people did last year and had this to say...

...the framework for the week was at once structured and yet flexible allowing for a myriad of activities to take place with participants bringing their own richness of experience...and of course the denouement -- the play!!

...the usual Haven stuff, warm, accepting, loving, caring people. The fact I knew so many people and felt so at home....it turned out to be magically relevant and motivating for me!
