The Haven News Update, Vol 5, Issue 9
September,2006

Joann's Healing Heart

Wendy Huntington, one of our core Faculty members at Haven, has been keeping us updated on her longtime-friend Joann Peterson's recovery from heart surgery. About five years ago surgeons repaired a mitral valve in Joann's heart and the hope was that nothing more needed to be done. Unfortunately, this was not so...her heart had another plan. On August 10th Joann had additional surgery and although she expected to stay only a week in hospital, various complications slowed her recovery and she arrived back home two weeks ago. Wendy says she is very weak but the good news is that Pete (her loving husband) is cookin' up a storm and every day she is getting stronger.

Her spirit has been up and down, but everyone who knows Joann recognizes her strong will, resilience and drive. In fact, when she was in recovery at the hospital, the physical therapists told her and Pete that she was in the top 2% of all patients who do everything that is expected of them. Wendy says, "What inspires me most about Joann is how strong she is! She lives everything she teaches and her recovery is a shining example of that. She always says 'the journey starts one small step at a time - one small movement is often all it takes to shift and begin again'. Even though her life journey has been tremendously challenging, both physically and emotionally, she continues to shine her heart light, even when her physical heart is compromised. She is such an inspiration to me!"

Joann has been relaying messages to us through Wendy and Pete all along and there has been a huge outpouring of affection and concern for her recovery. For instance, on the day of her surgery, a gathering of Haven friends and Faculty held a healing circle in her honour. She has been greatly warmed by all the cards, email and letters people have written and thanks you all from her soft and healing heart.

New Haven Faces

We are delighted to be announcing that we have filled the last of the four management stream positions at The Haven and we are very pleased to announce the pending arrival of Rachel Davey, our new Director of Programs at the Haven.

Rachel Davey has nearly 15 years experience in education administration as a teacher, trainer, manager and consultant and has worked for the British Council, the United Nations and other public and private sector organizations in Egypt, the Czech Republic and Cyprus. Rachel has a degree in modern languages from Cambridge University and a postgraduate diploma in Education Management. As Director of Programs, she will coordinate all aspects of programs offered through The Haven and implement the Master Plan for education. She has been coming to The Haven to take and intern courses for six years. Her own experience of attending Haven courses has been life-changing and she is excited at the opportunity to contribute by combining her professional and personal passions in the Director of Programs position at The Haven. Rachel and her husband Toby Macklin, with their children Rory and Ismay, are immigrating to Canada and are looking forward to their new life on Gabriola Island. Toby is an editor and book designer whose work includes The Haven "Book about" Series.

We hope that Rachel will be joining us by the first of October, pending a successful immigration process.

Taking Leadership to the "Next Level"
We’re excited! A new course, "The Next Level (evolved) Leadership", will be presented at the Haven from October 27-29, with two distinguished facilitators, Robert Keegan and Valerie Nemeth. The intention of the course is to introduce a paradigm shift in leadership thinking.
In many organizations, processes such as re-engineering, re-inventing and maximizing productivity are treated merely as intellectual games. Many of you have been through personal development systems with fancy names (like Sigma, HR this and HR that) and may be skeptical about one more “new” leadership program.

Let Robert and Valerie set you straight! In this course, they will present leading edge concepts and ideas and provide participants with the opportunity to enter their own personal 'Next Level' journey into leadership. The essence of this course is undoing the perceptions, ideas and concepts that you now believe to be the way the world works.

In a group setting, through class participation and interchange of ideas, the leaders will demonstrate various interesting, humorous and perceptive ways to move beyond the mind patterns that are holding you back from advancing to the ‘new level’ in your leadership thinking.

Re-connect with your true power and purpose. Sign up today for “The Next Level (evolved) Leadership” course.

The Haven Foundation Donor Stories
Our heartfelt thanks to you, our donors. Your donations are making a difference. People show up and contribute in such unique ways: we appreciate all your help. Your contributions keep The Haven spirit alive. Here is a testimonial from a recent bursary participant...

“It seems quite incredible to me that my week at The Haven and my individual work here could be so effective in resolving such a long standing state of anxiety and fear, but it was. The evidence of my Coming Alive was present in my face; the face in the mirror looking back at me was different, softer, shining, glowing, amazing. I accomplished what I set out to do. This is the strength of the human spirit and the power of the mind. When the week was over, I knew in my heart that I have found that special place of being a child of God, alive in the world. I want to express my sincere gratitude for The Haven’s financial aid program, those who contribute to the program, The Haven staff and my Come Alive family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart”.
