Shari Ulrichhis one-day symposium sponsored by The Haven Institute will offer current perspectives and practical approaches in personal and professional development. Keynote presentation will be with Juno Award winner, singer/songwriter Shari Ulrich and our Haven faculty members, Cathy and Ernie McNally.

In addition to winning a Juno, internationally acclaimed musician Shari Ulrich is also a talented multi-instrumentalist, television host, theme composer, script writer and more recently, theatre performer. The Golden Threads of Your Doing and Being are Woven into the Fabric of The Haven.
Cathy and Ernie McNally As readers of the UPDATE will be aware, part of the "reorganization for growth" at The Haven has involved Ernie and Cathy McNally stepping down as General Managers as the management structure was reconfigured. During the transition process, Cathy McNally continued as Acting GM until July 31st. Both Cathy & Ernie have indicated they will continue as members of The Haven Faculty. The Haven Foundation Board is immensely grateful for their service during the "formative days" of our transition from a private business to a non-profit charitable foundation. The following "open" letter from the Foundation Board is intended to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to both of them. We are sure everyone will join us in these sentiments.

Dear Ernie and Cathy:

We are writing to say "thank you." We know these words are inadequate to mark the enormous contribution you have made to The Haven. As "managers" of The Haven you have exhibited a high degree of "heart" for what we teach and who we are as an organization. Far more than just managers, you have been ambassadors for The Haven and you have been a major part of the glue that has held us together since the departure of our Founders Ben and Jock. The many hours you have devoted to our staff, our property and most importantly our clients are an important part of your legacy. Added to this, is your tireless behind-the-scenes efforts to help us to grow through a most challenging transition period.

Most significantly, you have helped us appreciate that The Haven is far more than a beautiful place on an Island or an "Institute for Personal and Professional Development." For you, as for all of us, The Haven is an expression of the potential of humankind.

You are remarkable individuals and you are a remarkable couple. Whatever the "next thing" may be on your journey together, we wish you well and we hope your connection with The Haven will always be a part of your life. We wish you health and abundance and happiness in your lives and in your life together. Your "doing" and "being" over the past few years while undertaking the "management" role is woven into the fabric of The Haven and you will therefore always be a part of this "place."

Once again, thank you!!!

People and Numbers and a New Haven Face
Christine PurfieldWe would like to extend a warm welcome to Christine Purfield, our new Financial Comptroller. With her natural warmth and a flare for working with people and numbers, Christine will assist us in the areas of financial and strategic planning and in aligning our financial and administrative systems with the requirements of a charitable foundation. Working closely with the Executive Director and our Director of Finance and Administration, Christine will also provide internal professional oversight and advice in regard to how we manage our finances at The Haven.

Christine was born and raised on Merseyside in the UK and now considers Gabriola Island her home. Her newest passion is sailing, and she also enjoys both running and reading. She has been a branch manager of a financial institution, a Director of Finance Administration & Human Resources with a social services agency and most recently, had her own public practice accounting firm on Gabriola. She has a Certified General Accountant (CGA) designation.

The Haven Foundation Donor Stories
Our heartfelt thanks to you, our donors. Your donations are making a difference. People show up and contribute in such unique ways: we appreciate all your help. Your contributions keep the Haven spirit alive.

Monthly Donors
Your consistent donations are highly valued and with every dollar being matched, you help support the many facets of The Haven. Thank you, thank you!

Knitting Hands of Heart
Through the generous contributions of our donors, Cynthia received a bursary to attend a program this year. Her knitting passion served her and us well, especially since she donated proceeds of the sale of her gorgeous knit creations back to the Bursary Fund. Her sweaters and scarves raised $505, and with Scott and Laurie matching those funds, it means that Cynthia has provided an opportunity for someone else to receive a bursary. Thank you, Cynthia, for creating your own way to "pay it forward"!

Dance & Games Donation
Our heartfelt appreciation goes to a special trio of giving. We received a heartfelt donation from Mark, specifically for the Dance & Games program. Mark’s generosity sparked Scott and Laurie to match his donation early so that a family was able to attend Dance & Games this Summer – a winning combination of giving from heart to heart!

Provincial Employees Community Services Fund
Thank you to the donors who pledged donations to The Haven Foundation during the Provincial Employees Community Services 2005 annual campaign. This unique way of contributing happens when employees advise their employers that they would like to establish a giving program within their organization.

Should you wish to make a donation to The Haven Foundation please contact Gill Robillard at 1-877-247-9238, extension 238 or visit us at www.havenfoundation.org

New Courses
There are two new courses at The Haven in August. One is "Simple Presence" with Wayne Allan and another is "Drum Talk" with Lyle Povah. Look up these creative initiatives on our website and come and join us in August!!
Look-about for Book-about …
Anger Boundaries and SafetyWe are delighted to announce that we have just received the next book in our expanding Haven Book-about Series. It is Joann S. Peterson’s new work entitled, "Anger Boundaries and Safety". This is an updated version of her original book entitled the same.

An excerpt from the book chapter entitled "Valuing Anger" encompasses the value of the learning presented by Joann: "The feeling of anger suffers from bad press, because for many of us it is inextricably tied to violence. This book is about valuing anger by separating it from violence and learning to express it in ways that are responsible, boundaried, non-violent and safe"

Excerpt from the book forward written by Bennet Wong and Jock McKeen:

Joann is an excellent teacher. She can take complicated ideas and communicate them in practical, down-to-earth ways, with models that people can understand. The pages of this book present analysis, models and exercises that can help people deal with anger in a clear, responsible, uncontaminated way, thus freeing their life energy from the confusion that arises in fear, insecurity and suppression. This important work fills the urgent need for understanding and action in facing the present rising incidence of social and personal violence.
