Restructuring for Growth
As many Haven friends already know, 2006 is a year of transition and restructuring to bring the "business" of The Haven more into line with the requirements of a non-profit charitable Foundation. The new organizational model will enable us to continue while focusing on what we do best – offering unique and leading edge personal and professional development programs and courses that are centered on experiential learning and promote the values of self-responsibility, direct communication, meaningful relationships and life fulfillment.

The restructuring began in January 2006 with the appointment of an Executive Director (Rick Jackson Dip C) who has the role of bringing The Haven Foundation Board and the operations of The Haven into closer alignment. In addition, an Education Committee was struck and work has begun on an Education Master Plan that will guide the renewal and expansion of The Haven’s courses and certificate programs with an updated curriculum. In May 2006 Rick announced a change in the management structure from the previous "General Manager" model to a structure that encompasses four management streams: Operations; Finance & Administration; Development & Marketing; and Programs. While these management streams are responsible for handling day to day operations at The Haven, each of the streams is aligned with a Committee of the Foundation Board that have oversight and policy responsibilities. The Foundation Board Committees are: Facilities; Audit & Finance; Development; and the Education Committee.

For the time being, the Programs stream (which encompasses both courses and certificate programs) will be shared by Cathy McNally and Rick Jackson while we take the necessary time to consider who will lead this key management function. Inquiries about Haven courses and programs should continue to be addressed to The Haven Registrar.

Meanwhile, we are pleased to announce the appointment of the Directors of three of the four management streams:

Bill Leuze photoBill Leuze, Director of Operations
Bill Leuze first arrived at The Haven as a cook in 1987. Since that time he has held the positions of Maintenance Supervisor and Systems Manager. Bill, who is fluently bilingual, was educated at Université Laval, Selkirk College and Vancouver Community College. He is currently studying for a Bsc through Athabasca University and he is moving toward completion of a Diploma in Counseling through The Haven Institute. With nearly 20 years experience at The Haven there is not a "nook or cranny" that Bill doesn’t know about on our Gabriola property. In his new capacity, Bill is responsible for Maintenance; Systems; Housekeeping; and the Kitchen. He will also play a leading role in ensuring that a Master Plan developed by the Facilities Committee is implemented in the most professional way possible. His goal is to ensure that The Haven continues to provide excellent service to its clients while we renovate and expand our operations in a way that is sustainable in the community and to the environment.

Lorena Lavers photoLorena Lavers, Director of Finance & Administration
Lorena Lavers has been the Finance Supervisor at The Haven since 2002. Educated in Victoria B.C. through the Certified General Accountants Association of British Columbia, Lorena is on the final lap of her studies to become a Certified General Accountant. During her years at The Haven she has supervised every facet of The Haven’s financial affairs. In addition to keeping The Haven’s books straight and making sure the payroll is met on time, Lorena has been playing a key behind-the-scenes role in the transition of The Haven from a private business to a non-profit charitable Foundation (no easy task). She will be working with the Board’s Audit & Finance Committee and a part-time CGA to ensure all of The Haven’s financial and tracking systems are of the highest professional quality. In her new capacity, Lorena is responsible to oversee the functions of bookkeeping, budgeting, payroll, human resources and financial systems. Her goal is to provide The Haven with a highly professional and focused budgeting, forecasting and financial tracking process that will enable us to grow with the confidence of our clients and our donors.

GillRobillard photoGill Robillard, Director of Development and Marketing
Gill Robillard came to The Haven as an independent contractor in 2004 when The Haven Foundation was first formed. Her first role was to a "self study" report as the first stage of The Haven obtaining accreditation through PPSEC which involved reviewing our entire Programs business stream and writing a report illustrating our structure and methods. She is therefore uniquely aware of The Haven from this perspective. Her next role was to establish a fundraising component to The Haven’s repertoire. Her tireless efforts and passion have been an inspiration to all of us as she has created (from thin air) a strategic fundraising plan from which there have already been several successful fundraising campaigns. Perhaps most notably has been the Learning Person-to-Person fund which has already enabled more than 90 deserving participants to take our courses through the granting of bursaries. Gill was educated in South Africa and she has participated in many personal growth workshops at The Haven. She has a wide business experience having been a Division Manager; business owner/operator, realtor and human resource manager over a lengthy career in Canada. In her new capacity Gill is responsible to oversee the activities of fundraising (including grants), marketing and advertising. Her goal is to continuously improve The Haven’s outreach to those who wish to take Haven programs and courses and to those who wish to support The Haven through financial or volunteer means.

Rick Jackson photoRick Jackson DipC, MTC, Executive Director
Rick Jackson has been associated with The Haven since 1990. He completed his Diploma in Counseling in 1996 and since that time he has been leading Come Alive and other Haven courses. Rick also has a degree in therapeutic counseling. As a former senior executive with more than three decades of experience, Rick is very familiar with both the challenges and creative possibilities of leadership. In 2004 Rick retired as the Chair of the Immigration and Refugee Board in B.C. and since then has been an international organizational consultant. Rick has had a distinguished international career representing both public and private interests in the fields of disarmament, international trade, human rights and social policy. He has led international delegations in dialogue with several heads of government including Mikael Gorbachev and Nelson Mandela. In 1989 Rick hosted the visit of Nobel Laureate Lech Walesa to Canada. Rick’s immediate goal is to guide the transition process and to help position The Haven for sustainable vitality and growth under its new configuration.
