Leading By Being

We are with people at The Haven every day who make a positive difference in our world simply by living what they believe; people who don’t need someone else to lead, or spend time planning their life as it is going by. Gerry Owen on his way through the Rockies‘Leading by Being’ is happening all around us. As Margaret Wheatley said in leading up to her keynote address at April’s Vancouver Symposium, a leader is anyone willing to lend a hand.

Gerry Owen is one of those people. His unmistakeable spirit, sometimes quiet and sometimes speaking up, contributes to life in so many ways. In addition to participating and interning at The Haven he generously donates countless hours as legal counsel for the Haven Foundation…and he is the infamous inspiration behind the annual Reflections Potato Cannon Extravaganza!

As you are reading this Gerry and two friends are somewhere around the Great Lakes, biking across Canada on the Ride into Light Nanaimo to Newfoundland 2006 Bicycle Tour. Supported by the Canadian Mental Health Association, their intention is to raise awareness about the issues facing the one-in-six Canadians experiencing mental health concerns, and to raise funds for local mental heath programs.

Donations to Ride into Light will be distributed to mental health programs in the Province where they were collected. To follow their journey visit the Riding Into Light website: http://www.hopelutherannanaimo.org/Tour/bicycle.htm.

A New Horizon—Just Imagine

This year’s New Horizons course could not be better-named. Hosted by Jane Olynyk and Wayne Dodge with Joann Peterson, these 25 days promise to be the stuff of stories for years to come. Why you say? Consider this…

For over 20 years people have associated New Horizons with Ben and Jock. They created it, it was their signature course, and they were synonymous with its content. Last year was the final time they will lead it alone. While they have developed interests in other areas of their lives, Ben and Jock have also been increasingly aware that they are surrounded with a plethora of gifted and diversely talented faculty who—given the opportunity—could present a collective New Horizon beyond what any of us imagined. Now, for the first time we can present the people and the opportunity that has thus far only been imagined.

And that is what New Horizons 2006 is…people, opportunity, imagination. Give yourself the opportunity to be part of this New Horizon with the 15 talented people who are creating and presenting the sessions of New Horizons 2006. Just imagine…

What we can imagine is just how engaging, stimulating, full, surprising, reflective, challenging, fun, satisfying, entertaining, thoughtful, fascinating and unpredictable these 25 days may be. What we can’t imagine is why you haven’t signed up yet! Call 877 247 9238 extension 234 and register today. Be sure to ask about return-participant discounts and part-course registration. The Haven Grows in New Directions

Under the direction of Rick Jackson, Executive Director of The Haven, we are presently undergoing an internal reshaping intended to further integrate our Foundation, Institute and Resort activities and position us optimally for growth. The General Manager position is being phased out and the business is being reorganized under four streams: Operations, Finance & Admin/HR, Programs, and Development, each with it’s own manager.

It is intended that this will afford each area greater opportunity for focus and growth, while still maintaining the benefits of our closely-knit team across the whole business. At the time of writing our ‘transition team’ is hard at work on the details. We will share more news in future Updates as it emerges.

Just Quickly...

Through their course Healing Stitches, Mary Holdgrafer and Wendy Huntington have created what has become a much-anticipated annual event at The Haven. This 5-day course has evolved into a heartfelt blend of craft and connection that one participant described as an Healing Stitches“extremely powerful turning point in my life. I have created illness in my body by clamping down on my creativity and keeping it bound up. In a very safe environment, I have been able to express my creativity and felt the release of energy blocks in my body. After five days of creating, my energy is not ‘battened down’—I am FREE!” And if you had any lingering doubts, check out this group picture from the recent Healing Stitches!

The Prince George Connection… We want to extend our thanks and appreciation to Sue and Aubrey Muirhead and their dedicated group of volunteers who helped make The Haven Connection Evening at the University of Northern BC in Prince George such a success. A turn-out of 50-plus joined Cathy and Ernie McNally on June 15 for a whirlwind tour of Relationships followed by a viewing of Andrew Best’s extraordinary DVD of The Haven “There is a Place…”. After a break for tasty snacks, coffee and tea we engaged in questions and conversation about anything and everything to do with The Haven—from new courses to the Foundation; from group size to fundraising. We measure success with what is so valuable—and likely most immeasurable—the spirit in the room. To us, the spirit of the world is a better place because people came together in a room in Prince George to engage in relationship-building. We invite you to do the same; in your community, for our world.
