Well-stocked Anger Toolbox Comes to 'Life'
Joann Peterson created her course, Anger, Boundaries & Safety, in response to her own personal and professional life experiences.  She felt a strong desire to bring clarity to the distinction between anger and violence, and as a result more ease, familiarity and an increased sense of safety and comfort in the expression and witnessing of anger.  Her course presented anger as a natural, boundaried human expression. Through the repertoire of skills presented in “Anger Boundaries”, hundreds of people have experienced a personal transformation in their approach to, and beliefs about, anger.

Anger Toolbox DVD imageIt is likely no surprise to you that Anger, Boundaries & Safety has become one of our most successful courses.  Since publishing her book of the same title, the awareness of what Joann has to offer in this area continues to grow.  And with this month's release of the DVD The Anger Toolbox: A Blueprint for Responsible Anger, Boundaries & Safety we believe access to this vital information will definitely be 'kicked up a notch'.

The Anger Toolbox is the latest result of the creative and energetic spirit of Andrew Best (to see more of Andrew's work, check out The Haven's new DVD There is a Place... at our on-line store) and is the first offering from The Haven Learning Library. Based on the in-depth filming of an Anger, Boundaries & Safety course and interviews with Joann Peterson and participants before and after their experience, it is an effective initial learning tool for someone who has not taken the course as well as being an excellent post-course reference for participants.

Without exception, everyone who has viewed The Anger Toolbox has been moved with its calibre and content. We give it our highest recommendation. Not because of Joann's association with The Haven—though we are thrilled that she is receiving the recognition she so richly deserves—rather because we believe strongly that there is much to be gained by having this DVD in your home.  Whether or not you have taken the course, the opportunity to view and re-view this subject is a value that cannot be underestimated.

Recognizing that this learning will be useful in a variety of settings, from private in-home to counsellors to corporate and government training, the DVD is priced at several levels to reflect its use. To learn more, visit www.thehavenlearninglibrary.com. You can also buy the DVD from our on-line store at www.haven.ca/store/booksandvideos.html#ATB and when you are at The Haven you can see a demo DVD which includes clips and a brief synopsis of The Anger Toolbox.

Make The Haven Connection in Prince George!
You know, it seems this 'ensemble' thing just keeps getting better and better. For quite a while now we have been aware of the abundance of great ideas, and the good souls who are bringing these great ideas to life through their spirit, energy and a desire to make it happen.

The reason this comes to mind is that the latest example of this ensemble spirit is the next The Haven Connection Evening, which is coming to Prince George in June! The March Connection Evening in Calgary was fun and successful, thanks to the remarkable group of people who organized and participated in the evening.  Just to spur your memory, you can read about it again in the February (Issue 2) and March (Issue 3) Updates.

Here is the quick where-and-when for Prince George:
Location: 7-172 Bentley Centre, University of Northern British Columbia
Date: Thursday, June 15, 2006
Time: 6.30 pm – 8.45 pm
Cost: No charge

What is The Haven Connection Evening about?  It is hosted by Cathy and Ernie McNally, who will spend some time taking an interesting—and hopefully fun—look at relationships (including their own!); show you the new DVD; tell you about The Haven Foundation, and what's up and what's in the works at The Haven these days.  And if you have any questions, ideas, suggestions or wonderings, bring them with you and bring them up!

If you live in the Prince George area a letter is on its way to give you all the details, and if we have your phone number you will likely get a call to make the invitation 'person-to-personal'.  If you would like more information, or you do not want to receive a follow up telephone call, please call Gill Robillard at (250) 247-7912.  We would love to see you there!

Faculty Faces, Coming Courses
Mary Holdgrafer photoMary Sullivan Holdgrafer, M.Ed., Dip.C., is an accomplished textile artist, counsellor and group facilitator, living in Edmonton with Gary, her husband and life-collaborator. She is interested in how the creative process can be used to enhance personal growth and healing.  Mary used her artwork as a means of personal healing following a diagnosis of breast cancer more than 11 years ago. Since then she has assisted many people to explore their own creative processes.  Mary and Gary have an excellent website www.exploringcreativity.com, chock-full of articles, ideas, essays, news, events and featured artists.

Mary is held in high regard by her peers, and her work is held in public and private collections and has been exhibited in Canada and the United States. May 29 to June 3 she brings her passion and spirit to The Haven, where she will be leading Healing Stitches with Wendy Huntington.
Al Chambers photoAl Chambers, B.Comm, Dip.C., brings his dedication to being with people at The Haven from half-way around the world! Al lives in Taipei, Taiwan with his wife Debbie Yao where he has blended his years of study and life-experiences to his work as a counsellor and educator. He is an experienced group leader, counsellor, college and university instructor who has been assisting the personal growth of men and women for almost 20 years.

In addition to his Diploma in Counselling, Al has a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology, a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce and maintains his standing as a Registered Clinical Counsellor in British Columbia. He is a member of The Haven's Core Faculty, and travels here from his Taipei home to co-lead Come Alive.  Al is currently leading the May 14-19 Come Alive with Gillian Enright, and will be co-leading the June 4-9 Come Alive with Jane Olynyk.  His sensitive understanding and first-hand experience of eastern and western cultures, along with his own personal journey of discovery, contribute to his recognition as a uniquely effective and popular leader.

Centers Gathering at The Haven
Elfi and Joy photoMay 6-10 The Haven hosted Centers Gathering 2006, a gathering of leaders from personal development and retreat centers who came here from as far away as Australia.  Though this is the first time we have been host, these gatherings have been going on for almost 20 years. As is the case in our courses, the variety of people who attended gave the gathering a character all its own. Though the size, location and intention of these centers covers a broad range, the people who choose this 'work' have an unbridled passion and care for what they do, and for the difference they believe it makes.

The personal nature of our connections made the spirit of this gathering very special. Discussions in and out of sessions ranged from business operations to personal spiritual resilience.  Throughout our time together there was a caring, thoughtful, and abundant desire to share information and experiences, with the intention of benefiting us all.

Making this event even more special were The Haven staff, who were ever-present gracious hosts, and our bodyworkers, who offered much-appreciated relaxation and rejuvenation to our guests.  We cannot express our thanks enough to Jennifer Hilton, who volunteered her time to attend the gathering and record the details of our sessions.

After our first-hand experiences with those who attended Centers Gathering 2006, we left these 5 days more encouraged than ever.  We believe the collective collaboration of these people, and the people who lead and attend the courses offered at their respective centers, makes a positive and important contribution to our world, and the quality of life. And there has never been a time that it was needed more than now.  We believe that if you are reading this Update, chances are you are a vital member of this loose world community of positive-difference-makers. We invite you to pause and realize just how much this means. Personally, we're thrilled!

Just Quickly...
A warm and appreciative thank you to all of you who helped make the first 'donday' at The Haven such great fun...not to mention productive!  Folks came from as far away as Victoria and Comox on Sunday April 30 to participate in a day in The Haven 'yard' guided by our gardener-extraordinaire Don Mattson. After a cup of hot coffee/tea and a moment to pause and connect, our attention was focused on clearing the forest floor and debris in the area just off Crystal Lane, next to Havenhaus.  By the end of the day we had cleared brush, helped each other out, shared muffins, coffee, tea and a great lunch, spent a great day in the spring air, and parted with a Haven T-shirt emblazoned with ididadonday! Given the fun and spirit of it all, it seems like another one of these days this coming fall is a good idea. Stay tuned for details, and plan to come join the next 'donday'!

The Haven co-founder Jock McKeen was recently visited by Dr. Ian McWhinney, his favourite professor from medical school. Dr McWhinney is no ordinary 'favourite professor'—he is the founder of the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine, which is regarded as a premier medical research centre in Canada, and is credited with defining the discipline of Family Medicine as a distinct field of medicine.  He is a world-renowned medical educator, whose approach to health care is a basic model used in training family doctors.  To Jock he is 'Ian', a mentor and friend to whom he sent a copy of the newest Wong/McKeen Bookabout Health and Happiness.  Ian loved the book, and this lively octogenarian came to Nanaimo especially to visit with Jock and Ben, and discuss the issues raised in the book...now if someone had just taken notes!

In a gentler vein, we want to share with you that Pam Siddel has passed away.  Her friend Suzanne Knight wants you to know that Pam was keenly aware of the spirit and care offered from near and far during her final days. Those who knew her from her participation in last November's Come Alive will likely easily imagine that she left her time here with the same grace and dignity with which she lived. And if you did not know her personally, our wish is that you be thankful that the world is a better place because there was Pam.
