March,2006

It seems that almost every day, in some way, we see the evidence of the numbers of passionate people who come forward with a desire to contribute to The Haven; some in ways we had hoped for, some in ways we never could have imagined...  This quality has been so prominent in recent events we decided to tell you about, and share our appreciation for, just a few of these people and their passions.

Dick Sass
When The Haven Foundation was established we were fortunate to have Dick Sass say ‘Yes' to the challenging task of being the first chairman.  To put it in perspective, imagine being asked to lead a group of skiers down a mountain you had never seen before...blindfolded!  Dick provided The Haven with exactly what we needed—heartfelt leadership—exactly when we needed it.  And after two years in the chair he is stepping aside to attend to the other passions in his life.

This really is one of those times when there aren't words to say it all, so we will simply say, Thank you Dick.

Bill Chalmers
Bill Chalmers photoFollowing on the heels of Dick's departure, it is our continued good fortune to have Bill Chalmers become the new Chairman of The Haven Foundation Board.  To introduce you, and tell you more about Bill, we could tell you all the stuff that you usually find in a business bio.  We could tell you about his almost four decades as a successful leader and entrepreneur in everything from building homes to building relationships.  We could also tell you about the endless hours he has spent working with others to turn their dreams into reality.  And then there is his irreverent (sometimes downright weird!) humour, open generosity, infectious energy and generous caring spirit he brings to being with others.

And perhaps a letter he wrote to us after attending a Come Alive speaks best about who Bill is. Here is an excerpt ...
As a participant who was unwilling to "vicariously experience" the Come Alive through others eyes or ideas, I chose to not interview anyone, solicit information or feedback as to their personal experience of the course.  I came in willing, excited and not influenced by other's "take" on the work.  I also made a decision to "stay connected to my body" or "be in my body" for the whole week and suspend judgments and "mental processing" as much as I was able.

As I've integrated back into my life I have noticed a gentle settling throughout all my activities. It is subtle but profound and being "in my body" and noticing many things in a new and extraordinary way is both moving and familiar. It's as if a have finally found my way home and am now connected to myself (head and heart) in a wonderful, inspiring and delightful way.

What else can we say? ...Thank you Bill...and welcome!

Andrew Best
Two years ago Andrew Best approached us with an idea to translate his talents with video production into a series of projects intended to put The Haven into people's hands in ways we had only imagined.&nbap;  Andrew's ambitious plan included:
  • Filming courses and turning them into educational programs that could be used in schools, businesses, community centres, and in shortened versions on television
  • Weaving conversations with people who are involved with The Haven—course leaders, participants, interns, assistants, and staff—into a video that would express their experiences here and how these experiences have shown up in their lives.
  • A video of the concepts and values that are the core of The Haven laid over visuals and stills that people could take with them as a reminder of their time here, as well as a way to show friends and family something about their experiences.
There is a Place DVD jacketThe first two of these three plans are well on the way, and the third is a reality!  There Is A Place... is now available in DVD format in our store and on-line at http://haven.ca/store/booksandvideos.html#thereis  Beginning with a striking visual collage of the property and facilities, intermixed with concept video and a soundtrack of conversation excerpts with our founders Ben and Jock and General Managers Cathy and Ernie McNally, There Is A Place... tells a simple and clear story of what The Haven is all about.  Poignant and personal, we believe everyone who knows The Haven will find something for themselves, and those who have never been will get a ‘feel' for the place. The DVD takes it's name from the beautiful song that ends the video, accompanied by gorgeous photographs from Sam Mak, Debbie Doucette and others.

As moving as we find There Is A Place... every time we see it, possibly the best part is seeing what is possible when someone like Andrew brings dreams to life. Thank you Andrew.

Faculty Faces, Coming Courses>
Trying to describe Creativity: Phase IV is turning out to be much more difficult than imagined.  On the surface it is 10 days spent exploring music, voice, movement, writing, painting, money and carving...and the enduring learning is the gentle and persistent deepening that evolves as participants discover nuances of themselves along the way.

It seems fitting in an Update where we appreciate the individual and collaborative qualities of the human spirit that we include the leaders of this remarkable 10-day creative odyssey...
  • As well as ‘hosting' the course, Cathy & Ernie McNally share their often quite different experiences with music and bring an unexpected creative approach to the topic of money
  • Greg Dandeneau guides hearts and hands carving life into wood
  • Marlyn Farrell shares her delight with the surprises waiting inside the paint and brush
  • Louise Amuir brings her joie de vivre to voice and song
  • Joel Prevost dances feet to hearts with charm and passion
  • Ellery Littleton opens the doors to his love for the elegance of the written word
...and as always, the relationships, attractions, resistances, and surprises enveloped in the expected and unexpected are the gift that keeps on living!  If you are wondering at all right now as you read, we invite you to be in touch and learn more about the possibility of being part of this year's Creative Phase April 13 to 23.  As one participant said after last year's Creative Phase "For me, this is the most impactful of all the Phases!  I have learned that creativity is about living what I have learned in unexpected ways; and I have a new appreciation for how much creativity is already in my life...what WAS I waiting for?!"

Here is the complete course schedule for the next two months:
Jonathan Diderich
When we tell you about events like the book launches for the new Book About Series, InfoSessions, the Wellness Show, The Haven Experience in Victoria, and next month's Vancouver Symposium, we have rarely mentioned Jonathan Diderich.  This ebullient heart-on-his-sleeve man also came into our lives after being part of a Come Alive and deciding to offer what he could do to contribute to The Haven.  What began with an email offering his marketing expertise for a volunteer project grew into an almost two-year collaboration and friendship that has helped us introduce The Haven in ways and places too numerous to mention.

We are happy for Jonathan and sad for ourselves to let you know he has received a wonderful opportunity to move to Ottawa and work as Senior Public Affairs Officer with the Canadian Operational Support Command...which is a long way of saying he has received a great opportunity to pour his large heart and gifted mind into a life-long desire to work with people all over the world to increase understanding, compassion and collaboration.

Though we may sometime be able to measure all the ways he contributed, we will never be able to measure his passion and care.  Thank you Jonathan.

Just Quickly...
Calgary Group photoIn last month's Update we told you about The Haven presentation in Calgary coming March 2, and the hard-working group of volunteers who made it happen.  It was a great evening, bringing together a mix of people who have not been to The Haven for years, with those who were here last week, with those who have never been at all.  The result was a personal, fun, informative and engaging time!
Here are some of the people who helped, and some of the 50-plus people who were there!  Thank you team!

Nancy Perry has told us about a simple, private, easy and free way for all of us to contribute to The Haven Foundation while shopping on-line at www.igive.com "I'm supporting The Haven Foundation just by shopping online for brand-name stuff at over 653 well-known online stores," says Nancy, "I get free deals and coupons just by being an iGive.com member."
Coming from the 'if-it-seems-too-good-to-be-true-it-probably-is school', we decided to check it out.  And it really is as simple easy and free as described!  Signing up was a breeze, as was indicating The Haven Foundation as the supported cause.   Two things we want to mention if you decide to join is that it took a few days for our names to get into their system, and a few of the businesses in the program don't ship to Canada.  Other than that it worked very well, with The Haven receiving a percentage of shopping we were planning to do anyway!
If you're interested, here is how it works:
  1. Join to support The Haven Foundation by going to http://www.iGive.com/html/refer.cfm?memberid=441078&causeid=34933
  2. Shop the Mall at www.igive.com  You'll see familiar stores and services like Apple, Blockbuster, Sierra Club, Roots, Canadian Tire, Dell Canada, Expedia, Barnes & Noble, eBay, Gap, Overstock, and Sears to mention just a few!
  3. Within 30 days of your purchase a percentage of what you paid goes to The Haven Foundation! Up to 26% of EACH purchase gets donated!
  4. There is currently a limited time offer of an extra $5 donation if you shop within 45 days of joining,
Thank you Nancy!

And thank you; for taking the time to read and recognize some of the many folks who contribute to The Haven.  Most of all, thank you for making the contributions you do, simply by living a quality of life that makes a positive difference in our world.  We cannot thank you too many times.  We invite you to look around, and pass it on to someone else you notice making their own positive difference.  You cannot notice enough times>

There is always something up at The Haven, to stay informed visit our website www.haven.ca , email us at info@haven.ca or call us at 250 247-9211 and toll-free 1-877 247-9238.
