Experience The Haven in Victoria
We’re just a few weeks away from the return of The Haven Experience
in Victoria. Last year’s inaugural event was a full-house success,
and the inspired efforts of the same group of hard-working volunteers,
under the legendary eye of Randy Wong, promises to be even better!
Picking
up on this year’s theme, Relationships: Living, Loving & Learning,
keynote speaker Gabor Maté (pictured left) kicks things off Friday
evening October 14 with The Biology of Relationship. Gabor
is an engaging and thought-provoking presenter. His keynote address
will discuss the mind/body unity in the context of relationships, and ask
listeners to consider that how we relate to each other as human beings
helps create our physiology and our psychology—for better
or worse!
Saturday morning will begin with an interactive-anything-goes question
and answer panel discussion with Gabor, Rick Jackson, Carole Ames, Cathy
McNally and Jack Sproule, moderated by Ernie McNally. From there
you can pick from a feast of topics and experiences, in engaging presentations
with members of the afore-mentioned panel as well as Joann Peterson, Catherine
Fallis, and Mary Helen and Ellery Littleton. For complete details

Gill and Paul Robillard will also be on hand all weekend to talk to
you about Haven Foundation, answer your questions, and show you the myriad
of ways you can be involved What else can we say? Oh yeah, mark October
14 & 15 on your “cool stuff to do in October” calendar and call Morag

Let’s Do Launch!
To say Ben & Jock’s Bookabout Health & Happiness—the
first of our new “Bookabout” series being written by members of our faculty—has
been a success is just a bit of an understatement. This gem has been
met with very positive responses and has quickly become our fastest-selling
book ever!
To celebrate, and give you a chance to chat with Ben and Jock about
their latest literary work (and whatever else comes to mind!) there are
a series of book launches in the works. First up is Nanaimo, when
they will be at the Katz Martini Lounge 121 Bastion Street Thursday October
6, from 6pm - 8pm. Friday October 28, Ben and Jock will be at the
Vancouver Central Library, 350 West Georgia Street, in the Alma VanDusen
and Peter Kaye Meeting Rooms (just below the main concourse) 6:30 pm -
9 pm for a book launch co-sponsored by Banyen Books.
Join Ben and Jock, and likely a few of your friends for an opportunity
to learn for yourself why many people are saying this is their best book
to date (and have your copy signed!) in an evening of conversation, fun,
and maybe a little music too!
Faculty Faces
The next few months is an eclectic mix of new and familiar courses,
and that seems as good a reason as any to spotlight two leadersone
new and one familiar and to introduce their new course.
Rick
Jackson, Dip.C., M.T.C., is a trained personal and professional
development counsellor and course leader, and most importantly he is the
father of an 8 year-old soul full of energy named Tomas! Rick has
been working with individuals and organizations to facilitate awareness
and growth for more than 25 years. He has acted as a training consultant
to various organizations and held a variety of high-level positions within
both public and private institutions. Rick is a director on the Haven
Foundation board, a member of our Core Faculty; and a Come Alive leader.
He has recently collaborated on the creation of two new courses: Spiritual
Intelligence which he co-leads with his wife Lynette, and Boundaries in
the Workplace with Paul Robillard. |
Paul
Robillard is a skilled manager and facilitator with more than 25 years
of experience, often working with partners and investors from varied backgrounds.
Over the past 2 years has volunteered many hours as a member of the Haven
Foundation board. And with all his varied interests, possibly closest
to his heart has been building with his wife Gill the home they share on
Gabriola Island. Paul enjoys creating work environments and company
governance structures that function on the basis of clarity, openness and
integrity, which has been his inspiration for co-developing Boundaries
in the Workplace with Rick Jackson. |
There is Only One Dianne Anderson
Dianne Anderson has been a vital part of The Haven since the day the
doors first opened. She has held virtually every role here, and done
so with a spirit and charm that defies description! We think she
is among the sharpest wits and warmest human beings ever to grace the planet.
If you know her at all, or even if you know someone who knows her, you
probably have a classic Dianne story, with its own mix of heart and humour.
You may not know that Dianne has been facing tests and preparations
for treatment of a recently discovered cancer. And though this news
may surprise you, reading Dianne’s following hospital story (complete with
her own version of the English language) will not likely surprise you at
all...
Ben and Jock came to visit and brought me a lovely sunflower.
We had a nice visit, the 1st one in a long time. I did not have the
operation. The continuing saga is: I'm in my bed outside the
operating room waiting to go in. The admitting nurse discovered that
we did not have the report of the chest X-ray I had the day before and
it got there at the last minute. The anesthesiologist looks it over
and asks me if I knew my heart was enlarged? No, says I. You
also have pulmonary edema! Oh, says I. I don't feel comfortable
proceeding with the operation, says he. Your kidding, says I.
No, he wasn't! Dr Carr the surgeon concurred. Now they are
going to keep me til Sunday, to get rid of my excess fluid and give me
antibiotics for my breast which seems to have a bit of infection.
They send me to 3011, I am with a nice little lady with no boundaries
and joins right into the conversation with Dick and Jennifer AND SHE HAS
THE WINDOW! Sometime after dinner they moved that lady out and I
asked for her spot, which I got, so there I am by myself by the window
just getting comfortable and getting used to the nurses ect. Next
thing I know they are moving me to 3024, down the other end of the hall,
new nurses but still a bed by the window and my room mate was pretty quiet
as she was quite sick. I am happy! People came to visit, brought
me flowers, me son bought me an Ipod that holds a 1000 songs. Exciting.
Here I doze looking out at the clouds and blue sky. Then that night
the jolly nurses enter my room and say We have to move you out into the
hall. Your kidding, say I. No, we are not, say they.
We have all these patients that need oxygen and you don't. Away I
go. I am now in this corridor off the hall, across from the elevators,
at the end of the corridor are the garbage bins, I AM AT THE ENTRANCE
TO GARBAGE ALLEY!
I have all my goodies with me in my tables etc. and there is a curtain
that makes it private. It is in a little alcove, with cupboards marked
"Lost Items", Christmas decorations, etc. There could not find a
bell for me in case I needed to call the nurse, so one of the nurses came
back with a ruler which she proceeded to bang on the tray, saying I could
use this. This is all too funny. I laughed and told her I could
yell louder than that, as we all know. The care I got was great however,
and the whole thing makes a funny story I think and I always like a funny
story. I am supposed to go back for the mastectomy on the 28th of
Sept. and in the meantime, I shall do some exercises, stop eating salt,
drink less fluids and look after my heart. I feel alot better than
I did when I went into the hospital. Rufus and his girlfriend were
here keeping Scott company, and he has taken a bunch of junk out to the
road for pickup, mowed the front, back and side lawns, fixed my vacuum,
installed a smoke alarm, cleaned the house and cooked for us all and did
the dishes. Good friend!
You are now up to date. This is turning into quite an
adventure! Love to you all Dianne
...’nuff said...
Just Quickly...
From the seed of a passionate idea, Catherine Caines has grown the
SoulFire Theatre. Under her veteran tutelage, several people have
realized their wish of performing and directing in some of the most impactful
plays ever written. September 30 to October 2, the aptly named SoulFire
presents “An Evening of Infidelity” at The Haven. The SoulFire troupe
will present two dynamic one-woman shows each evening, A Bed Amongst the
Lentils (with Louise Amuir directed by Catherine) and Lillian (where Catherine
takes the stage directed by Carole Ames). Each play offers tender
and funny looks at two women’s journeys with the men in their lives...and
the best part is seeing their passion for theatre come to life on stage—be
here if you can!
David Raithby will be in Prince George Friday Oct 21 to Sunday Oct 23
for a weekend workshop entitled Living Courageously. Hilary Leighton
is again working hard behind the scenes to make these events happen.
Call her at (250) 612-0702 or (250) 960-6443 and she can give you all the
details on time, location and fees.
It
just wouldn’t be a summer without a visit from “Frank.” He has been
coming here every year since 1976, sharing stories, music and meals with
one and all. We caught him in the midst of a last-minute breakfast
chat with our Bodyworker Coordinator Elfi Dillon Shaw before heading back
home to Montreal. We’ll see you next year Frank (we know because
he already booked his room)!
