Your Health & Happiness is Here!
Book Cover GraphicLast summer Toby Macklin and Rachel Davey approached us with an idea…develop a series of books written by our faculty, each ‘Book about’ focusing on a mix of The Haven core values, various models used in our courses, and an integration of new and evolving approaches to enhancing the quality of life.  The Book about Series would be designed and written to be an accessible and readable introduction to the concepts for someone who has never been to The Haven, and be an excellent take-home reference for people who have participated in courses here.  With Toby and Rachel’s collective background as writers, editors and publishers, and their familiarity with The Haven and our faculty through participating and interning, they were very able and willing to lead this ambitious project.  Needless to say, we jumped at the idea!

Now, ten months later, the first in the Book about SeriesHealth & Happiness’ is here!  That it is written by Ben & Jock, the two people who started The Haven in the first place, seems somehow quite fitting.  And that the cover features an original painting by bodyworker and faculty member Gary Dillon makes it that much better!

This book contains some of Ben and Jock’s best work and most innovative ideas, brought to life during their past few years of travel, presentations, reflections, and conversations.  It seems their relationship is profoundly evident during the writing process.  Ben is a continuous font of inspired ideas; Jock is a brilliant cobbler of concepts and possibilities; Ben gives shape and texture; Jock gives eloquence and image.  And together with the editorial guidance of Toby and Rachel we believe they have written their most readable and engaging book ever!

You can read the first chapter at http://haven.ca/us/articles/healthHappiness.html ..  Order your copy now from The Haven Store, and stay tuned for news of coming book launch events where you will have an opportunity to chat with Ben and Jock about Health & Happiness!

Bill O’Hanlon—A Rare Opportunity!
Since the inception of The Haven Institute in 1983 we have been blessed with innovative and ground-breaking presentations by some of the leading lights in the world of human development. The initial presence of people like Virginia Satir, James Bugental, Carl Whitaker, and Paul Reps; followed by Maria Gomori, Lee Pulos, and Marilyn Rossner, and more recently Bruce Lipton, Norm Shealy and Joseph Chilton Pearce, have each provided experiences sometimes challenging and energizing—and always memorable!

Bill O'Hanlon photoSeptember 16-18 we are absolutely thrilled to be adding to this legacy with a special 2-day course with Bill O'Hanlon, Keeping Your Soul Alive—a personal and professional spirit recharge.  The intention of Bill’s course is to bring positive and constructive approaches to the challenges of being with people, professionally and personally.  His compassionate ‘cut-to-the-quick’ style and heartfelt belief in the potential of the human spirit will make for an unforgettable weekend.  Bill is in demand all over the world, offering insights and ideas, and generating discussion on issues and challenges pertinent to those working in the helping fields and anyone who has ever found themself wanting a spirit and body re-energizing.

As you learn more about Bill, you will read that his history includes the development of Solution-Oriented Therapy and the foundation of Possibility and Inclusive Therapies, and more recently Brief Therapy.  You will also read about his many books and irreverent style.  What you will not read is something a little more difficult to describe—his in-person humour, warmth, and engaging manner, which has been evident from our first conversation.  And this is only enhanced by his enthusiasm and excitement about meeting and being with people.

It is a rare opportunity to be with someone of Bill's calibre in as personal a setting as The Haven; and being as direct as we can possibly be—don’t miss it!  We encourage you to register soon for a weekend we believe will live for years to come.

Faculty Faces
In as diverse and talented a group as The Haven faculty, it may not surprise you that creativity is a strong character trait running through virtually the entire assemblage!  For example...

Gary Holdgrafer is an accomplished educator and experienced group facilitator. He is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta.  Gary has applied his strong teaching abilities and interest in self-learning to personal development programs. He is particularly interested in the links between creativity, resilience and self-caring.  Mary Holdgrafer is an accomplished textile artist, counsellor and group facilitator. She is interested in how the creative process can be used to enhance personal growth and healing. Mary used her artwork as a means of personal healing and assisted many people to explore their own creative processes.  Her work is held in public and private collections and has been exhibited in Canada and the United States.

Mary and Gary have each experienced significant life-enhancement since having a personal experience with cancer, and bring an engaging and creative spark to family issues in Parent Time (Aug 18-21) and Being Steadfast Parents (Aug 21-24)

Marlyn Farrell is trainer of lay counsellors and employment facilitators, with 12 years experience designing and leading workshops.  She has worked using creativity as a healing tool with such diverse groups as professionals and at-risk-youth and she is currently expanding her work to include people with mental illness.  Marlyn’s Career Revisioning (Aug 12-15) course is a unique blend of personal creative skills and life situational review designed to integrate life-passions and career options.

In this latest Shen you will also read about Ellery Littleton’s experiences during the First Nations Come Alive for Manitoba Family Justice as well as Paul Robillard’s thoughts on tasking The Haven to the workplace.  We are doing more and more work in this area, with specific courses and sessions for organizations and businesses that can be held here or on-location.  If you are interested in learning more about developing a specific group/issue program, contact Ernie McNally at 1 877 247 9238 extension 239.

Last fall we added a virtual pictorial tour of The Haven to our website.  In mid-June the photographer returned to add three more views to the feature.  These pictures are a great way to “come visit”, and to introduce the beauty of The Haven to friends who have never been.  Take a moment and tour the new views at http://www.seevirtual360.com/themes/2/theme02.aspx?listingID=5061
