The Haven News, June, 2005

The Haven has always been about people like you stepping into life...this month we thought we’d tell you about some ‘recent people-steps’...

Ella-vated
baby Ella photoThere is much to be said for the depths of connection possible when we risk opening ourselves to another.  Small wonder there are more than a few thriving relationships that began when people met at The Haven.

One such relationship is that of David Liebe and Karen Johnsson, married in the spring and now having given birth to their first child - a daughter.  Ella Jacqueline Liebe was born in Vancouver on May 28, weighing in at a healthy 9 lbs 3 oz.

Ella is a genuine Haven-baby; her parents met three years ago when they were both participating in Phase I.  It was an unusually small Phase course, with only eight participants.  With an intimate 'big' group and only four people in small group at night, there was plenty of opportunity for personal work.  "Karen and I made a commitment early on that anything happening between us was fair game to bring into the group," says David. "Ella is a very direct and wonderful result of our working hard so early in our relationship."

"Having Ella with David really is a dream come true," says Karen. “I’m thrilled to have this wonderful new little person in our lives. I feel so grateful for her, and send out thanks to all those Haven friends who have supported this dream over the last three years.”

...now the question is, will her first words be “Mother, I want to check something out with you”...

Faculty Faces
Since the founding of The Haven, we have been blessed with exceptionally dedicated faculty members, each with their own style and talents.  Beginning this month we want to tell you more about some of the people leading courses in the next few weeks.

Peggie Merlin, M.A., Dip.C., PhD.,  is a dynamic and popular consultant, speaker and group leader with a unique background in social science, broadcasting and business. For over two decades, her career has focused on education, human relations and interpersonal communication.  Most recently, she was the Director of Training for Context Associated.  Peggy co-leads Women and Sexuality (June 23-26) with Joann Peterson.

Judy Sellner, Ph.D., Dip.C.,  has been in private practice in Vancouver for over 16 years, working with individuals and couples. Judy is co-author of Loving For Life; Love, Anger, Guilt & Sex: The Psychology Of Intimate Relationships and The Marriage Survival Kit. She has taught group process and psychology at numerous colleges in the Vancouver area.  Judy’s new course, A Good Beginning, is coming July 1-3.

The Art of Being Roger
Story Board photoIn the lodge at The Haven are several pictures taken by our friend Roger Harmon, capturing expressive faces of the peoples of Southeast Asia.  Many of these pictures were taken from 1983 to 1994 when Roger was working as the regional manager for the U.S. State Department-funded education programs in refugee camps in Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia.  The purpose of these programs was to prepare refugees who were coming to the U.S for life in their new country.

During his visits to the Thailand camps, Roger purchased a fairly sizable collection of Story Cloths.  The cloths, as large as 6 feet by 8 feet and as small as a few inches, are made by various Laotian groupsmost notably the marvelous Story Cloths of the Hmong people.  Made using appliqué and embroidery techniques on inexpensive cotton polyester cloth, these cloths incorporate both the patterns (pan dau) used in their traditional clothing as well as new ones.  Stitched into these cloths are stories of their traditional life in Laos, the war, their harrowing escape to Laos, and even their view of what resettlement would be in the West (such as sitting in front of TVs in apartment buildings!).

“I loved the colors and textures of the Story Cloths; the interaction with the makers/sellers, and it felt great to support the handicraft makers because they needed money to supplement their meager rations” says Roger, “Of the many items made, I decided to collect pieces which showed changes in design over time, and one-of-a-kind pieces which showed unique subject matter or special technical quality.”

Roger’s passion to have the world see these beautiful life expressions has resulted in a June exhibit of his Story Cloth collection (For more exhibit photos visit the on-line version of the Update at www.haven.ca/us/update/vol4/issue06.html), as part of Asian Pacific Islander Day in the National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque New Mexico.  The exhibit includes 15 of Roger's photographs showing aspects of Hmong life in Laos in the 1960's, life in the refugee camps in the 1980s-90s and Hmong in the U.S. in Seattle in the 1970s and again in 2004.  The intention of the exhibit is to share the stories of the more than 200,000 Laotian Hmong immigrants now living in North America.

Roger continues his strong connection with the people and culture of Southeast Asia by sharing his knowledge with small groups of people he takes on personal guided tours of Thailand, Kampuchea, Laos and Vietnam.  If you are interested in learning more about Roger’s tours, you can email him at worldviews2000@earthlink.net

Chandra painting Quickly...
Almost five years ago Donna Weigand returned to her Ottawa-area home to take up oil painting after a memorable experience in Phase I and some positive feedback from course leader Joann Peterson.  Last month Donna received a First Award of Excellence in oils and the Judge's Choice Trophy for a portrait of her eldest daughter Chandra (shown here), at the Nepean Fine Arts League (NFAL) Member's Night Awards ceremony.  Donna took a moment the next day to write us and say “Four and a half years who would have thought! Encourage your participants, they can't imagine what creativity may be hidden inside, waiting for a nudge...and give my hugs and gratitude to Joann Peterson for her nudge.”  For more of Donna’s art visit http://www.nepeanfinearts.com/artists/wiegand

If you are in the southern Manitoba area, The Haven support group in Winnipeg is starting again this fall with the assistance of Maria Gomori.  The plan at the moment is to meet once in September and once in October on a Monday evening at Maria's home.  For more information call John Sanger at 204-944-8008 ( work) or 204-889-9640 (home).

There is always something up at The Haven, to stay informed visit our website www.haven.ca, email us at info@haven.ca or call us at 250 247-9211 and toll-free 1-877 247-9238.

Take care, enjoy yourself, and each other, and be in touch soon.
