The Haven News, April, 2005

What Can We Say...
Joe Pearce book signing photo...that would express what it was like to be in the midst of the warmth and energy that seemed everywhere for the Friday and Saturday of the Vancouver Symposium?

We could tell you about the full house of 400+ people — old friends, new acquaintances, and those that were learning of The Haven for the first time — in the Marriott Pinnacle Ballroom Friday evening to listen, consider, laugh, and muse with Joe Pearce as he talked passionately and personally about the history and latest ideas and discoveries about the Heart-Brain Connection.  We could tell you about the sensitive, dynamic and innovative Saturday presentations by members of our faculty, and the energized and invigorating responses and connections of the session participants.  We could tell you about the tireless work of Morag Ruckman, Reneé Macdonald, Lorena Lauzon, Jonathan Diderich, Cathy Wilder, Graemme Brown and a host of volunteers who ensured the entire event flowed with consideration and care...

...And we imagine you have also had times where, no matter how many words you tried, nothing quite says what it was like to be you, in the middle of a truly exceptional experience...so we’ll try it with a few pictures here, and invite you to visit the online version of this newsletter, www.haven.ca/us/update/vol4/issue04.html, for more pictures of the spirit of the Vancouver Symposium.

Thanks to all of you who made this extraordinary weekend the stuff of magic, and the pleasure of connection.  Yet again we are in awe of what is possible when people gather in the spirit of wondering passion.

A Phase IV Who You Are
What are you doing May 13 to 23?  We invite you to come to The Haven for Creativity: Phase IV — 10 days built into one week (now isn’t that creative!) offering intriguing and surprising opportunities to discover more about who we are through our expressive and creative self.

Creativity is the passionate expression of our life.  Put another way, it is not the brush or pen in my hand, or the timbre of my voice, or the step in my foot that is the enduring discovery.  It is the pleasure of experiencing our self as we create.  Can it be fun?  Yes — and considering the sessions are filled with painting, singing, dancing, carving, music, writing and more that is not likely the surprising part.  What may be surprising is the life-learning ‘a-hahs’ we discover along the way, as each of these artistic expressions provides a platform for who we are.

We have again brought together a remarkable collection of artisans to share their crafts — and most importantly themselves — in an atmosphere of anything’s-possible.  Call Morag and Renée to learn more, and register for Creativity: Phase IV May 13-23 — 10 days of discovery, passion and personal poignancy we believe you will never forget, and forever treasure.

An Apropos Pourrie
One of the primary cornerstones of courses at The Haven is that our experiential learning be ‘take-home’.  That is, everything offered in terms of learning be applicable to our day-to-day life.  As you read what’s up below (...can’t believe I just wrote that!) we believe you will find a broad range of courses, ideas, topics, and issues that bring this cornerstone to life.  Read on...

Anger, Boundaries & Documentary
15 years ago Joann Peterson, drawing from her life and education, shaped her Anger, Boundaries & Safety course.  This course, and Joann’s book of the same title, has brought new understanding into countless lives about the safe expression of anger and the distinction between this emotion and acts of violence.

Joan, Andrew & Assistants planning meeting photoTwo years ago Andrew Best crafted a vision to bring together his gift for video production and passion for The Haven and the vital message and learning offered in Anger, Boundaries & Safety.  Through his company Archetype Productions he assembled the crew and support necessary to make this vision a reality.

March 25 Joann and Andrew came together to create the educational video version of this impactful course.  Four days later an immensely personal integration of crew, participants, leaders, and staff had filmed over 75 hours that will be distilled into what we believe will be a landmark production.  The video, intended to be the first of a series based on The Haven courses, models, and values, will be available this summer in two formats — an extended educational version intended for use in schools and a briefer version intended for private use in the home.  We will let you know the release date and purchasing details in a future Haven News Update.
