To Your Health
As we mentioned last month The Haven will be at the Vancouver Health
Show at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre this weekend. We
do so for many reasons, and probably the most significant reason is also
the simplest. Conversations. We continue to find that when
we all get a chance to meet each other face to face we can come away from
the conversation with just a little bit more understanding, awareness,
and interest.
We also enjoy the opportunity for members of our faculty to speak in
the seminar series'. Last spring Susan Clarke and CrisMarie Campbell
spoke to a standing-room-only crowd about their unique blend of communication,
relationship, and the current Emotional Intelligence ideas. This
weekend David Raithby will be speaking at 4:30 on Saturday on The 'Magic'
Of Medication? (yes, the question mark is there on purpose!) David
will be discussing the current research and thought-provoking alternatives
regarding the use of medication, and the amazing power of the 'placebo
effect', in the treatment of depression, anxiety and stress. David
is an excellent presenter (yes, we are biased...why not?!) known for his
sensitive, strong and dynamic work.
The Health Show is always filled with a broad range of offerings, so
if you are in the area and decide to attend the show, drop by and say hello!
One Moment in Time
The day a graduate of The Haven's Diploma in Counselling program receives
their diploma is a unique, memorable and very personal occasion.
The uniqueness of the journey is often difficult to put into words.
The recognition received that day reflects the learning encountered along
the way, and, more importantly, the choice to live a thoughtful, engaging,
and choice-filled life. It is not uncommon for "DipC" grads to acknowledge
that this moment means more than a string of university degrees.
We
believe that it is likely each of you reading this can relate to the many
times in your life where you have decided to step into life and consciously
seek more than just going through the paces. Though people who come
to The Haven are from as many diverse ways of being and doing imaginable,
this choice to live life is a common ground of experience.
And it is this common ground that offers the opportunity for mutual respect.
Why are we mentioning all this? Well, it is because every now
and then, in the midst of all this common ground, along comes a very special
moment for a very special person. Any of you that have had the good
fortune to spend some time in a course, a small group, or around a table
in the lodge with Jan Frison will likely know what we mean. Jan has
shared her heart, care, and skills with participants, interns, assistants,
faculty, and staff at The Haven in countless ways. And September
27 was her time to receive the recognition and care she has so richly offered
others for years. We imagine you can get some idea from this picture
just how surprised and pleased she was. And we imagine as well that
you are as happy as we are that we live in a world with someone like Jan.
Come Back Soon!
We received an interesting note last month from a reader that said
he liked this particular section, because even if he wasn't coming to one
of the courses it served as a reminder to him of people and times from
the past and opportunities for the future. It sounded like a good
lead-in to us, so we invite you to take a look, remember, plan, and come
back soon!

Making a Reality a Dream
Nancy Bradshaw has brought her commitment for the quality of life to
just about everything she does, including her participation in courses
at The Haven. Over the years she has folded this commitment into
her passion for children, and music, and being a parent has only served
to deepen her desire to bring these elements together in a way that would
enrich the lives of children and families in a personal and lasting way.
Nancy's
zeal has resulted in "Dream Child", a remarkable musical collaboration
with two other equally loving and creative parents; producer/composer/musician
Michael Creber (Grammy nominated for his work on Raffi's hit album Bananaphone),
and singer/actress/songwriter Beverley Elliott.
"Dream Child combines a magical bedtime story with inspirational songs
that help children relax before sleeping", says Nancy, "its captivating
characters, enchanting music and powerful message of joy and unconditional
love aim to build self-esteem, as well as strong values and beliefs".
CDs are available for $14.95 both online and at The Haven, as well as
a variety of retail locations including Vancouver's Kids Books and Odin
Books. 10% of Dream Child's proceeds will go towards distributing
the CD to children in need. To date, the CD has been donated to several
counsellors working with children in challenging situations, as well as
the BC Paediatric Aids Society and Callanish Healing Society.

Officially, at 5 P.M. on September 1, the first issue of my FREE
e-newsletter, YOUTHFUL AGING-HEALTH NEWS will be sent to those
who subscribe. For over 7 years I published Holos Health Report,
a print newsletter summarizing an overview of holistic concepts.
Now, in view of my upcoming 2005 book, YOUTHFUL AGING--SECRET OF
THE FOUNTAIN, and our research which suggests an average life expectancy
of 140 years for those willing to practice optimal health habits, each
week I will cover one subject which I consider critical in today's world.
I will not be pushing products. Those interested in my broad
recommendations will find references and links.
Please spread the word to your friends and news groups. If
