Playing Alive!
"The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect
but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind
plays with the objects it loves."
Carl Jung
Last October when Eric Bibb was here to perform in the Phoenix Auditorium,
someone remarked on how young he looked. He responded by saying "I've
been playing all my life, why wouldn't I be young!" These words about
the connection between playing, creating, and passionate living came to
mind while watching the shine in CrisMarie Campbell's eyes as she shared
her painting creations in an informal showing at The Haven last week.
This past June, just two short years after first putting brush to canvas,
CrisMarie decided to email friends and family telling them about her paintings
displayed on the website she shares with her partner Susan Clarke (see
http://homepage.mac.com/susanbclarke/PhotoAlbum2.html).
Shortly
after sending the e-mail out CrisMarie received a reply wondering if she
would be interested in displaying her art at the 6th Street
Arts and Craft Fair in Bellevue Washington July 23 to 25. Though
not certain what the decision involved, CrisMarie answered "yes".
In conversation a few days ago, CrisMarie said "Since deciding to attend
I have discovered many helpful experienced 'fair-folks' who have given
me great tips and ideas for making the event relational—just this weekend
at The Haven Peter Joyes shared his ideas and that was quite fun!
It is wonderful knowing this not just about selling art—but about meeting
new folks and creating relationships".
Something we think is equally wonderful is seeing the excitement and
passion the creative spirit seems to bring to life. CrisMarie says
she first inspired herself to paint after meeting Sue Muirhead at The Haven,
and learning about Sue's "no rules" approach to her art. CrisMarie
says she is enjoying discovering just how much she loves colour... and this
picture of one of her recent creations certainly makes that very clear!
Ellery's Novel Idea
Those of you that have had the good fortune to participate in one of
Ellery Littleton's writing courses will not likely be surprised to know
that his new novel, Time Crimes, is getting a very positive response from
readers and critics alike.
"Time Crimes" is a blend of science fiction, crime thriller, love story
and meditation on the meaning of time. It is also about the I Ching
It is an intriguing tale of time travel, fabulous treasures, hair-raising
heists and surprising twists of fate. The novel is flavoured with
a dash of Oriental mysticism (more than a dash, actually; considering the
in-depth material on the I Ching). The main character, a Chinese
detective named Moon, is an expert in the old Book of Changes. It
is also a love story, which unites the past, present and future.
"The ancient Chinese had a profoundly different perception of time than
we do", says Ellery, "This is reflected throughout the I Ching, which in
itself is very preoccupied with time and its impact on the course of human
affairs. In Time Crimes, these very old ideas are presented in a
new context".

Picture Yourself...
There is something "unwordly" about being at The Haven. And there
is something about being here for a summer course that makes it even harder
to describe. We thought this June picture of Mary Holdrafer, Wendy
Huntington, and the participants of their Healing Stitches course gathering
on the lodge deck might be worth the proverbial 1,000 words.

Dance & Games For Ever!
Year after year, Denise Goldbeck, together with her Assistants, Junior
Interns, and the children of Dance & Games For Kids create a magical
theatrical performance in four short, full, days.
The enthusiasm of these blossoming entertainers, and the pleasure of
their parents watching the show come to life, has become the stuff of legend.
And the legend grows every year!
This summer there are four Dance & Games courses, all full to overflowing,
running back-to-back throughout July. The result is a wonderfully
"lovely" presentation of "My Fair Lady" every 5 days!

Just Quickly...
Whoops! We won't bother you with the how of it. Suffice
to say that even with five sets of editorial eyes scanning the final copy,
we missed seeing that the last few words from two articles were cut from
the text of the Summer Shen. And to add a little more salt to the
wound we sent readers to page 3 to read the rest of the front-page article
that was actually on page 2! Here's what we missed on page 3 from
Susan Clarke's article Changing The Way Corporate America Communicates,
"and
invites me out of a fear-driven existence." and on page 6 from
Cathy Wilder's article Belonging, Pacing, and Joy, " creative kid energy...
something I suspect has been inside me all along". You will find
the complete Summer Shen (with all the words included!) on our website
(www.haven.ca/us/shen).
We are recovering nicely from this experience, other than the discomfort
from stepping on the tails between our legs...
