Roots
When the Manitoba provincial government made the decision a few years
ago to integrate First Nations community leaders into a family mediation
process referred to as Meenoostahtan Minisiwin (meaning "to set things
right"), one of the individuals in the middle of it all was Joe Pinterics.
As we mentioned in a previous Update, Joe recognized what increased personal
awareness and relationship skills could contribute to the success of this
ambitious plan. He began a process of bringing groups of community-based
mediators, called Okweskimowew (meaning "knowledgeable person") to The
Haven to engage, discover, learn, and share in a Come Alive-based setting
that has evolved into an annual "tradition" beyond what any of us could
have imagined.
Traditions
seem to be born from the passion to create something meaningful and lasting.
Often it seems the challenge is to retain the original intention and spirit
while making room for the freshness of something new to spring to life
in the midst of the familiar. April's gathering brought new dimension
to The Haven-Meenoostahtan tradition with the addition of a sweat lodge
that intertwined afternoon and evening sweats with sessions in the Heron
building. As each day passed, students became teachers, and teachers
became students as everyone learned more about the richness of differences
and the common ground we share.
The week's events served as a reminder of the traditions that have been
crafted over the years by people that come to The HavenNew Year's
Reflections, Amazing Grace sunsets, late-night hot tub conversations, participant
reunions, email connections, walks to the Malaspina Galleries, and more.
Chances are, as you are reading this, some of your own traditions and memories
of what makes The Haven unique to you will come to mind. Though we
all bring our own particular flavour, we believe the root is connection;
being with self and others with a simplicity that words would only complicate.
These "traditions" flourish because what makes The Haven The Haven is people
like you who care, risk, and open in a way that embraces culture, race,
gender, age, lifestyle, and history. And this, more than anything,
is The Haven Tradition.
Dance As If Everyone Is Watching
Once again The Haven was part of the Gabriola Island Dancing Man Festival,
a 10 day feast of music, dance, and theatre featuring performers from the
island and afar. The final night, entitled "Dancing Man Dances",
was the hi-light of the Festival, with the Phoenix Auditorium hosting a
collage of performances that held a full-house audience spellbound. The
evening began with a modern dance by Jock that set a high standard for
the rest of the night. Jock later returned with the extraordinarily
talented Heather Gordon-Murphy for a duet that received an enthusiastic
response from an appreciative audience. Their dance was choreographed
by the also-extraordinarily-talented Marlise McCormack, whom many of you
will know for her gifted contributions to Reflections' New Year's Eve dance
performances.

A Balancing Fact
Every now and then, along comes an opportunity to spend some time with
a refreshing take on life. When we first met Dr. Kathryn Mickle last
year we enjoyed our conversations about her pleasure in bringing together
a blend of Feng Shui, Qigong, and the principles of the Chinese 5 elements
in a way that has enhanced her own life-sense of balance and harmony.
She has been public speaking and presenting courses on this theme all over
the world, and her enthusiasm for the topic, and life in general, is hard
to miss! We are pleased to be able to offer her course, Finding Balance
& Harmony Through Feng Shui & Other Eastern Arts, June 11 to 13.
You can learn more about the course and Dr Mickle on our web site by following
the title listed below. And that is just one possible way for you
to blend a course and summer at The Haven. Boundaries, body issues,
sexuality, clinical studies, facilitator training, relationship matters,
family topics, humour and creativity are addressed by a faculty second
to none (yes, we are a little biased!) Take a look and be in touch!

Just Quickly...
OK, time to 'fess up. Do you actually read the information on
the Registration Form when you check in, or do you just look for the place
with the "x", sign, and trade it for your room key?! For most of
us, the last thing we want to be doing is reading over something that is
usually in pin-size print filled with more to-wit-and-here-to-fore-legal-mumbo-jumbo
than one brain can handle! Well, we have some good news...and some
bad news. The bad news is that in the process of our transition with
Haven Foundation we have re-written our Registration Form and it is longer,
with more to read about what you are agreeing to when you come for a course.
The good news is that all our returning participants will arrive to a Registration
Form with all contact details, medical history, and emergency information
already filled in. Though we regret a longer form, we did so with
two important intentions in mind; one is to make it simple and clear enough
for us average souls to understand what we are agreeing to, and second
is to have it in nice, big, bold easy-to-read print. The origin of
these changes was suggestions and questions from participants and guests.
Our thanks to all of you that contribute to change for the better at The
Haven!
Naomi Melnyk is one of the smiling faces you have seen around the kitchen
the past few years. And one of the reasons you may have been smiling
is because Naomi has been responsible for some of those wonderful breakfasts
that have greeted you each morning. A few months ago Naomi took leave
from her cooking duties here, and a few weeks ago gave birth to "Frid"
a joyously healthy baby boy! Both are well, and both have all their
fingers and toes...
That's a wrap for this Update. We'll be in touch again next month
with more news and information about the courses, events and people that
are The Haven. In the meantime, visit our website www.haven.ca, email
us at info@haven.ca or call us at 250 247-9211 and toll-free 1-877 247-9238.
Take care, enjoy yourself, and each other, and be in touch so
