What The World Needs Now
We are in the warm afterglow of having spent a week with a group of remarkable
people from China, and appreciating yet again the richness life offers
when we take the time and opportunity to get to know each other.
This all began last summer when our friend Sean Fung contacted us from
Beijing with a desire to bring a group to The Haven for a Come Alive with
Mandarin translation. Part of Sean's intention was to introduce The
Haven to a part of the world that only knew about us through books and
conversations. Their awareness of the ideas and philosophies taught
here had sewn the seeds of curiosity about what it would be like to come
here and participate in a Come Alive with Sean's assistance as translator.
That moment began an adventure of immigration, visas, letters, plans,
changed plans and more changed plans until a group of nine tired people
arrived at our door last week. The five days that followed have been
filled with open hearts, warmth, and connection that needs no language,
something we imagine any of you that have participated in a Come Alive can
understand. The seamless teamwork of faculty with David Raithby,
Linda Nicholls, and assistants Leslie Whyte and Dianne Anderson, and the
tireless work of our dedicated staff created everything The Haven is known
for: the pleasure and challenge of discovery and connection, in the ubiquitous
presence of great food, and thoughtful service. The experiences of
our new friends from China spawned many conversations about future possibilities,
here and in China, and we look forward to strengthening the growing ties
between east and west.
The Spirit of The Event
For
several years now The Haven has been an active participant in the annual
International Institute of Integral Human Sciences Conference held in Montreal.
This year is no different with Ben and Jock, Joann Peterson, Maria Gomori,
and Linda Nicholls all making presentations.
The conference is the brainchild of Marilyn and John Rossner, fostered
from their desire to bring together people, experiences, and ideas to learn,
share and discover in an open and dynamic setting.
Ben and Jock will be speaking on Resonance and Emotion: The Language
Of The Spirit, and offered the following thoughts on their talk: Holistic
philosophies propose an integration of mind, body and spirit. Throughout
modern history, the spoken and written word has been our principal method
of understanding and manipulating the mind; it is the cornerstone of modern
day communication, philosophy, psychology, education and therapy. The language
of the body, important to so-called primitive cultures, has been largely
ignored in modern times; the crisis in our health care system has brought
a renewed emphasis on being able to listen to and learn from the body's
messages. Scientific approaches have treated the notion of spirit
with suspicion, skepticism and sometimes even belligerence. This
presentation proposes that the spirit speaks through the phenomenon of
"resonance" which occurs when people share themselves intimately - the
language of the spirit is loving expression in resonance.
