Write Where They Are
Ben Hur Photo Many of you may know Rachel Davey and Toby Macklin, and will be pleased to hear they are the proud parents (authors!) of their newly published children's book A New Coat for Ben.  After returning to Cyprus last fall they put the finishing touches on the book and have published it in three language versions - English, Greek, and Turkish.  A New Coat for Ben is touching story of caring and connection based on a real playground horse.  And thanks to the attention the story has been receiving the book has played a significant role in having the story come true!

"Ben Hur" is a children's riding horse that has lived in a park in Nicosia, Cyprus since 1952.  Over the course of his first 50 years "Ben" was the source of many hours of fun and fantasy, and also became a little worse for wear.  Thanks to Rachel, Toby, and several people in the community Ben has had a =91makeover=92 and was unveiled by the Mayor of Nicosia at a launch party last November.

"Lots of people turned up, the atmosphere was great.  A real party." writes Toby, "Ben looks great, and they painted the rest of the stuff in the playground too.  We like being part of doing a service to the community, and we've made a very good start at selling the books!"

The story is well-told and the illustrations are beautiful, so it is not surprising that we have almost sold out of our first shipment of books, with more on the way.  Copies are available in our store, and by contacting our Reception staff.

Participating In Wellness
Over the course of the past two years we have become increasingly involved in opportunities to heighten awareness of The Haven at events and expositions focusing on personal health, wellness, and awareness.  We were thrilled with the response to our participation in last year's Vancouver Wellness Show and enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces throughout the weekend.

This year's show is scheduled for February 13-15 at The Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre, also known as "the sails" and we are working more closely with the organizers this year to follow up on our 2003 success.  In addition to our on-floor display, members of our faculty will be making two one-hour presentations.  Friday the 13th (is this really a good idea?!) Cathy and Ernie McNally will present "Living a Sensual Relationship" and on Sunday the 15th Susan Clarke and CrisMarie Campbell will speak on the topic of "Emotional Intelligence".  We are furthering our participation in this event with an all-expenses-paid weekend at The Haven as the Wellness Show's Grand Prize.

If you are in the Lower Mainland February 13 to 15 make a note to drop by the Wellness Show, say hello, and see what's new and what's the same at The Haven.

Choosing A Course Of Action
One of the reasons The Haven continues to thrive is the blend of new and interesting courses and cornerstone programs.  Our February and March schedule makes this point in spades!  Come Alive, Phase I, Effective Boundaries, and Disengaging Depression are joined by Trish Grainge's return with Journey To The Well; Joann Peterson and Cathy & Ernie McNally approach to quiet personal discovery in Quietly...; Carole Ames and Judy Cashmore's offering of NIA body movement philosophies and techniques; Emotional Intelligence insights with Susan Clarke and CrisMarie Campbell, and Joel Prevost's innovative sculpture course Play With Clay.  Follow the course titles to more information on our web site and spend some time at The Haven this spring!

Just Quickly...
New Year's Day was a special time as Ben and Jock officially transferred The Haven into a non-profit foundation.  In a touching and personal Reflections morning session they recognized many of the people that have played a part in our first 20 years.  In a Special-Edition Update we will provide more information about the Haven Foundation and the exciting times to come as we step into the next 20 years and beyond.

The Spring 2004 Shen is at the printers as you read this, and will be in the mail by month-end.  You will find several articles sharing perspectives on "integration", along with personal notes from Ben and Jock and a re-print of one of their most talked-about articles ever Why Don't Men Sit To Pee?  You will also find the complete Shen articles and columns on our website by the end of January, so wherever, and however, take the time to savour a little food for thought (and feel!).

Several people in the Winnipeg area are part of a Haven support group that meets the 3rd Monday of every month at 7 pm.  They have asked us to let those of you in that area know that they are always looking for new members to join.  If you are interested in learning more contact John at (204) 944-8008 or Monique at (204) 237-1803.

If you have been here in the last month you already know about the new look in our rooms.  Our staff has been busy installing new beds, furniture, and bedding as well as subtle changes to the room décore.  Your ideas, feedback, and suggestions have played a big role in this process, and there is more to come as we blend the familiar with change throughout The Haven.

That's a wrap for this Update.  We'll be in touch again next mont h with more news and information about the courses, events and people that are The Haven.  If you want to be in touch with us, visit our website www.haven.ca, email us at info@haven.ca or call us at 250 247-9211.

Take care, enjoy yourself, and each other, and be in touch soon.
