The Haven News, September 2003

Symposium Coming To Life
The buzz around our November 2 & 3 Symposium, Being Alive and Well in Stressful Times is becoming an all-out hum!  The intention of this event is two-fold: to invite professionals in the health, education and helping fields to gain more awareness of the opportunities and ideas incorporated into our courses, and as is often the case when interested people come together to stimulate discussion around what is possible when we encourage each other to step into, and stand forward in, our lives.  There is much to be gained for all of us in the mutual discovery shared from many different perspectives.  It is our wish that this become the first of many gatherings of people involved and interested in exploring the nuances of healthy living.

Speaking of healthy living, as more people are becoming aware that the noted alternative medicine pioneer Norm Shealy will be our keynote speaker, there is considerable interest as well in his pre-Symposium course, Healthy Living to 140!, an excellent opportunity to learn first-hand about Autogenic Training, Holy Water, Sacred Oil: The Fountain of Youth and the role of Modern Mysticism in our quest for longer, healthful living.

There is more information about the Symposium and Norm Shealy's course on our web site, take a moment and pay both a visit.

Trust in Hand
Creativity continues to be a ubiquitous theme in The Haven courses, and it has never been more so than for the Labour Day weekend's inaugural Trusting The Stone.

Arthur Weinfeld brought his passion for people and stone-carving together a few years ago, and from these roots came his remarkable two-day course.  Participants began Friday evening with a piece of soapstone and a few basic tools.  From there they worked through the challenge and opportunity presented by this apparently innocent-looking stone, (and needless to say a few personal challenges and opportunities as well!) and carved a creation, and an experience that will each live on for years to come.

We are thrilled to say that we have already begun the process of having Arthur return April 23-25, 2004.  Take a look at these pictures from the weekend course, take a look at your April, and be in touch!

Speaking Up
Several members of The Haven Faculty are accomplished public speakers, addressing private and public meetings, conferences, and events on a broad range of topics.  Though our faculty come from a plethora of backgrounds and a vast collection of interests and qualifications, their common ground is the ability to offer lively opportunities to consider, discover, and engage.

We thought we would "put the bug in your ear" next time any of the personal interest groups you are associated with are looking for a speaker.  Be in touch with us anytime at manager@haven.ca if you have a specific faculty member in mind, or we will put you in touch with someone whose experience and expertise will fit your bill.

Fall For Your Self...and Others
As the blur of the summer slowly fades into stories and pictures, fall presents time to pause, reflect, consider, and discover.  So we invite you to pause a moment, reflect on where you're at, consider the coming courses listed below, and discover how easy it can be to register, either on-line or on the phone!

Just Quickly...
If you are curious about people, or just like to sit back and be entertained, then take in the Grassroots Project at the Studio Theatre in Burnaby's Shadbolt Centre for the Arts Saturday October 4, at 8pm and Sunday October 5 at 2pm.  This ambitious project, founded by Greg Gurel, is now in it's third season.  What makes these performances unique is the emphasis on music, song, and dance presented in an informal and personal atmosphere where the audience and the performers are encouraged to meet and mingle.  Jock has been involved in the project from its inception, and returns this year with Heather Gordon Murphy to present new dance solos and a reworked version of their dynamic duet "Jeux Noir". For more information or to reserve tickets email: g-whiz@shaw.ca

A few years ago Bevanne Russell made a personal learning commitment to herself to discover her passions pursuing a Diploma in Counselling.  Upon learning that a potential funding source was not to be, and facing a "what now" reality, Bevanne has put her learnings into action.  With a classic "lemonade from lemons" scenario, she held the grand opening September 13 of Shab 2 Fab in Prince George, B.C.  Given birth from her passion for home décor and sensitivity to the environment, Bevanne has created "a store based on furniture re-design and re-modelling from a recycle perspective"...where the spirit lives, the soul flourishes.

Teachers!  Consider a weekend at The Haven with a unique blend of your profession and your person.  Ellery and Mary Helen Littleton are bringing their popular two-day course Pro-D for the Self to The Haven October 24 & 25 to coincide with the B.C. provincial Pro-D day.

That's a wrap for this Update.  We'll be in touch again next month with more news and information about the courses, events and people that are The Haven.  If you want to be in touch with us, visit our website www.haven.ca, email us at info@haven.ca or call us at 250 247-9211.

Take care, enjoy yourself, and each other, and be in touch soon.
