The Haven News, August 2003

Pausing To Say...
One of our greatest challenges is trying to put into words the nature and qualities of the courses offered here.  Our catalogue and brochures describe the content, format and intention of the programs.  And, as anyone who has been a part of courses at The Haven can attest to, this only scratches the surface.  The essence of exploring, discovering, connecting and sharing is best told in the words of those who created the experience.  This is why it means so much when people just like you pause to share your unique perspectives and stories.  These personal expressions say what brochures and catalogues alone can never sayhow it is, person to person, in the moment.

We truly appreciate the quality of the testimonials we receive, and with permission share these with others interested in learning more about our courses.  If there have been special events and memories you wish to share with others about your times at The Haven we would love to hear from you.  Our Testimonial web page grows and grows, and your words would make a valued contribution.  Be in touch, and "share the health"!

Symposium Update
Norm Shealy photoLast Update we told you about our plans to hold a two-day Symposium designed to introduce The Haven, our concepts and philosophies, to people working in the Health, Wellness, Helping, and Human Resources fields.  This past month has been filled with plans, emails, phone calls, and meetings as the project takes shape.  Several members of our faculty will be making presentations, and we are thrilled to have Dr. Norm Shealy confirmed as our keynote speaker. Ben & Jock will be hosting the Symposium as well as speaking on a number of topics

The symposium, titled "Being Alive and Well in Stressful Times" will begin Sunday afternoon, November 2 with a welcome, followed by Dr Shealy's opening words.  Next up will be a series of presentations, wrapping with a special session with Ben and Jock and an open forum.  Monday's schedule will include faculty presentations, a second talk with Norm Shealy, and closing remarks from Ben and Jock.

Faculty presenters confirmed to date include CrisMarie Campbell, Susan Clarke, Wayne Dodge, Gwen Ewan, Catherine Fallis, Wendy Huntington, Derek Lacroix, Sandey McCartney, Cathy and Ernie McNally, Linda Nicholls, Joann Peterson, David Raithby, and Phil Winkelmans.

Speakers will address addictions, anger, body & energy, body movement, boundaries, compassion, communication, depression, distress, emotional intelligence, fear and anxiety, relationship, spiritual counselling, and more.

A special thank you to David Raithby for his tireless efforts (and we have just begun!) and to those of you who have volunteered your time and efforts to help put this ambitious project together and to be in touch with prospective attendees.  If you have any suggestions, ideas, or wish to contribute in any way to the Symposium, please be in touch with David at sandav@island.net.

Music, Music, Music!
The almost-200 people that jammed the Phoenix Auditorium during the Bararumba! weekend August 2nd and 3rd created a musical spirit and energy that defies description.  Pounding drums, thrusting hips, smiling eyes, and swaying arms weaved through two days of rhythm and dance that reached a passion-laden crescendo as performers and audience intertwined in a concert-ending celebration of everything music can offer.

Bararumba finale
Since we began presenting live concerts last year, The Haven has taken on a musical life all its own.  Small wonder we are looking forward to "what's next"!  And "what's next" is a fall line-up of jazz, blues, country-rock, swing, folk, and bluegrass featuring Eric Bibb, Joani Taylor, Pied Pumkin, A String Of Girls, Gary Fjellgaard, Nathan Tinkham, Diamond Joe White, and Danny Mack.  Sound like fun?  Come join us!!

See Below For What's Up!
In addition to our extensive line-up of courses coming up in the next two months, we have great news for those interested in attending Phil Winkelmans notable course Tools For The Soul Through an error on our part, the September date was omitted from the web site schedule.  Check out the course description, and the abundance of rave reviews offered by past participants, then make a date to be here September 21-26!

Just Quickly...
If you have had any reason at all to phone The Haven in the past year, you will have likely enjoyed conversations with Elizabeth Bailey, affectionately known as "Lizzie".  We are sad and happy to say that she has left for higher education at the University of Victoria.  We will miss her seemingly endless ability to hang in there in the ever-changing world of Reception!

And congratulations to Scott Poole and Laurie Kelley-Poole, proud parents of Grace and Kelley, the best-known pair of twins ever born!  The litany of emails that kept one and all informed of their day-to-day progress may someday be published as a four-part pre-natal biography!

That's a wrap for this Update.  We'll be in touch again next month with more news and information about the courses, events and people that are The Haven.  If you want to be in touch with us, visit our website www.haven.ca, email us at info@haven.ca or call us at 250 247-9211.

Take care, enjoy yourself, and each other, and be in touch soon.
