Imagine spending 25 days at The Haven...
Our inaugural Phase IV: The Creative Phase is complete, and by all
accounts it was a marvelous experience for participants and facilitators
alike. The 25-day creative odyssey was a remarkable journey through
writing, singing, acting, dancing, carving, painting, music, moving, breathing,
and journalling, all wrapped around what quickly became significant opportunities
to reflect, discover and discuss the many nuances of the creative process.
Participants in this inventive collage ranged from 22 to 62 years of
age. They were students, marketers, homemakers, teachers and computer
programmers; they came from Taiwan and across Canada;. As one participant
wrote, "Phase IV is subtle, gentle and much fun. Yet the depths
that I explored and the exhilaration I felt is no less...I can break my
outdated beliefs. I broke a belief that 'I can't sing' ... I am delighted
to report that I CAN SING! I may never become a distinguished singer
and I have broken a belief that held me back from singing. Similarly I
can paint, write poetry, journal, act, carve wood, none a practice in my
life so far. Phase IV is all about looking deeply inside, updating
the outmoded aspects of my 'rule-book' of life, acknowledging the voice
of the judge in my head and being able to put it in its place. As
I leave now, I am asking myself; 'What might I now invent, that I haven't
yet invented, that would give me other choices?' I am daring to ask
this question now. If you need some encouragement to ask it yourself,
come to Phase IV next year."
We believe Phase IV has much to offer, and we want to open its doors
to everyone. The fullness of what this Phase has to offer is difficult
to describe, and that is why we are doing something The Haven has never
done before. We are creating an opportunity for you to come to
next year's Phase IV absolutely free! If you are a Haven Institute

Gardens & Grace
How do we describe the beauty that Don Mattson brings to life each
year? Don is a true gift, as a person, a friend, an artist, and a
gardener. He is the gentle-man you see working quietly, coaxing new
richness from The Haven gardens. Here is just a taste of his remarkable
touch...
Totem Rejuvenation
In the summer of 1998 Michael Runningwater came to The Haven in the
midst of his personal Vision Quest. He saw our Totem, at that time
in need of painting, and made an immediate connection for himself with
his own desire for care and spiritual rejuvenation. Michael spoke
with Ben & Jock, and together they made plans to lower the Totem.
For the next few days, Michael, joined by several willing hands, re-painted
the Totem. On July 20, with people from Taiwan, New Zealand, Europe,
and across Canada and the U.S. joining in, our Totem was raised again resplendent
in its refurbished colours.
This June 17 Michael returns again to continue his quest. The
Totem will be lowered, re-painted, and raised again June 22. You
are welcome to join us during this time to add your hand to this new tradition.
If you are unable to be here, we will include you in the spirit of the
event...and in next month's Update we will be sure to have the story and
pictures for you!

Just Quickly...
12 years this month, Evelyn Thompson joined The Haven.
As our Housekeeping Supervisor, she oversees the immense myriad of details
that go into ensuring the rooms and facilities are ready and waiting for
you when you arrive, and day-after-day. Thanks Evelyn, and may we
be blessed with your presence for many years to come!
Concerts at The Haven continue to be an abundance of musical
riches. Shari Ulrich was just here; Bararumba!, which
we announced last
month, is coming for a workshop and concert August 2&3; Jazz-diva
Joani Taylor is scheduled for September 27, and we have just confirmed
Eric Bibb will be returning October 27! In addition to their
considerable talents, these people are almost without exception quality
souls whose spirits add a warmth and personal touch to each performance.
If you have been to a concert in The Phoenix Auditorium, you probably know
what we mean, and if not, join us some time!
That's a wrap for this Update. We'll be in touch again next month
