Bararumba!
Funny how things happen...an incidental conversation about a totally
different topic, followed by a few emails, some music and a video, a phone
call here and there, and before you can say "Bararumba" a 12 piece
Afro-Cuban Folkloric Percussionist/Dance and Song Troupe is on their way
to The Haven this August!

This fascinating group of 6 percussionists and 6 dancers from Baracoa,
Cuba are making their first venture outside Cuba this summer. We
have invited these people to come and introduce us to them, and learn about
us. Their time here will be a cultural blend of workshop and performance.
Beginning at 1pm the afternoon of August 2 we will be offering 4 hours
of dance and percussion instruction with an emphasis on fun and discovery
of places you didn't think your body could go! That evening Bararumba
will take the stage for a vibrant performance of pounding rhythms, sensuous,
sexy courtship dances, fire breathing, glass walking and eating, including
opportunities for the afternoon's workshop participants to join them on
stage! The next morning we will bring this memorable weekend to a
close with a final two hours of "rhythm and moves".
Though we are absolutely certain that the workshop and performance elements
of their visit will be rich with good times and great memories, it would
not be The Haven without the opportunity to be together, person
to person, people to people. And this may be the greatest of the
many gifts this weekend will bring. Baracoa is situated on the east
coast of Cuba, and because of its isolation, this folkloric group has developed
a unique style, in their music and in their lives. We invite you
to bring your feet, your heart, your camera, and join us for
Bararumba
August 2 and 3 for a truly remarkable weekend!
The two-session workshop is only $100, and the concert is $20.
We have two special packages, the Workshop & Concert for $109 and an
all-inclusive Workshop, Concert, Accommodation & Meals (plus a limited
edition Bararumba CD) for $179! At the risk of sounding cliché,
make your arrangements soon to be here if the early response is any indication
this will be a "good time was had by all" event!
Oh, The Changes They are A-Timing
Bararumba is just one of the additions and changes that are giving
a different shape to our summer schedule. Some changes are
in response to the impact of SARS for our friends in the orient, while
others are a reflection of the ideas and suggestions of participants, friends,
and faculty as well as our own interest in offering new, different, and
evolving opportunities to enhance the quality of life. Some immediate
changes to note are:
Mandarin Mini Phase, Mandarin Anger, Boundaries & Safety,
and
Mandarin Reflections are all postponed to Summer 2004. This decision
is a direct result of SARS and the unpredictability this creates for people
in Taiwan trying to plan summer travels.
Though unfortunate, these changes have resulted in our first offering
of
Cantonese Mini Phase, July 29 to August 12, 2003. We have
been working closely with Simon Ho and Linda Wong in the
Lower Mainland to develop this course, originally intended for summer 2004.
Similar in content to the Mandarin translated Mini Phases, and based on
Phase I, Mini Phase course fee including tuition, accommodation, meals
and translation services is $2590 ($2380 earlybird) plus taxes. Simon
and Linda have offered to provide information and assist with reservations
in Cantonese to anyone interested in learning more about this inaugural
course. To speak with them, please call them at 604 836 5966.
Randy Wong's new course, Chewing The Cud, an exploration
of obsession with that unique Randy Wong perspective was originally scheduled
for August, with Mandarin translation. Now offered in English only, it
is scheduled for July 25-27, at a reduced fee of $465 ($435 earlybird).
We are very excited about two new courses making their debut this summer.
Coyote's
Journey will be offered July 7 to 10. The root of this intriguing
course is drawn from Native cultures. Indigenous cultures around
the world taught their children in invisible schools, through a set of
powerful techniques known as Coyote Mentoring. Course leader
Wes
Gietz' Coyote techniques include story telling, reflective questioning,
and both structured and spontaneous experience. Scheduled to run in parallel
with
Dance & Games, this course offers participants methods
to introduce children to effortless, enjoyable, and inspiring ways of learning.
These methods draw out curiosity, encourage self-sufficiency, cultivate
confidence and an enhanced sense of self, and develop a profound sense
of place in the natural world.
When we were first introduced to Arthur Weinfeld we had
a sense that something special was to come. And indeed that special
something is Trusting The Stone, August 29-31. Arthur is a
clinical psychologist and a passionate stone carver. He has combined
his extensive clinical training and experience with his passion for stone
carving in developing this wonderful course.
Each participant is invited to choose a stone, then guidedregardless
of expertiseto carve, working through layers of ageless stone, giving it
shape and motion. Simultaneously, the layers of our own psyches,
and our sculpting styles become a metaphor for our approaches to living
and problem solving. Together, we explore the topography of both
stone and self. It is a rare person that remains untouched by this
process. During the weekend, basic hand tools for stone carving are
taught, and from there the course presents opportunities to envision images
in the stone, and then let go and "trust the stone" and use stone carving
as a tool for self-discovery and transformation.

Just Quickly...
Some
gifts give themselves all year 'round. Dianne Anderson is
one of those gifts, and the warmth and loving that comes her way seems
fitting recognition of this gem of a woman. Her recent birthday was
a day-long parade of calls, cards, gifts and hugs. Here she is ruling
her domain, accompanied by a few of her loyal subjects and a soon-to-be-consumed
cake!
Ben & Jock will be front and centre in San Francisco at "Love
& Intimacy: The Couples Conference", sponsored by the Erickson Foundation
Conference. They will lead of the Thursday, June 12, workshops
with "Relationships Make Me Sick", a 3-hour presentation on the algorhythms
for wellness and illness, with emphasis on practical solutions to states
of dis-ease and illness that can be the result of blocked relationship
energies.
