Meenoostahtan
There are many pleasures in being at The Haven, and there is
none greater than witnessing the seemingly endless possibilities brought
to life by people who care enough to live with curiosity and passion.
Last year Joe Pinterics had the vision to bring First Nations
leaders working with families in communities all over Manitoba to The
Haven to learn some of the skills Joe had experienced first-hand while
participating in courses here. He believed that this opportunity
would bring greater clarity, communication and ultimately understanding
and action to the challenges that face the people he works with every day.
His drive and determination resulted in having a group of 16 community
leaders come here for a 5-day gathering to learn, discover and share about
themselves and the core of the issues prevalent for the families in their
communities. They left committed to take their learnings back home
and begin to put ideas into action.
The result of Joe's initial vision is an excitement that is spreading
throughout the many groups he works with to learn more, do more, and create
more possibilities for people to transform the blur of "what can I do?"
into the desire and passion to discover "what we can do!" This excitement
is alive this week as Joe returns with 44 leaders to continue turning the
page to new opportunities in a second 5-day gathering led by David Raithby
and Linda Nicholls.
The name for the original collaborative project that held the vision
of focusing on the quality of life for families and communities is "Meenoostahtan".
It is about working to create a clear path that acknowledges the past,
accepts the present, and opens doors to tomorrow. We are thrilled
to be part of the process with this remarkable group of people!
Following The Heart Of Art
As we have mentioned in the past, the roots of The Creative Phase
came from the ever-growing examples and stories from those of you who have
found expression of personal awareness through many forms of creating.
Often the essence of what we hear is that an understanding of what it means
to "be on the path" versus being focused on the outcome has brought new
energy and possibilities to what creativity is all about. We also
hear that this discovery has happened in many different ways, which is
why we have no prerequisites for participating in this new Phase program
beyond having attended a course here. And as we get closer to the
beginning of the first Creative Phase (April 30-May 25) we continue to
hear wonderfully inspiring stories about how personal awareness and curiosity
has unearthed the creative spirit within.
A few years ago, Ottawa native Donna Weigand shared her life-long
passion to paint while participating in Phase I. A few months ago,
Donna was in touch to tell us that she had inspired herself to pursue her
passion after her Phase experience. We wrote back and forth with
her about the range of her personal journey as she followed the root of
her desire, the "4 A's" of her "foray" and the re-birth of her artistic
expressions. And, as is often the way, sometimes a picture says much,
much more. So we asked Donna to send us a photo of her work to share
with you&

A Number Of Opportunities
In the next
seven weeks, we have over twenty courses
scheduled, with more than thirty-five leaders and facilitators with
countless
possibilities! Take a moment and read over the myriad of topics addressed
in the coming weeks, and follow the course title to our website for more
information!
Music To Our Ears
The international stature of the Canadian music industry has grown over
the years to become recognized as one of the world's premiere breeding
grounds for musical creativity. This recognition is a tribute to
the hard work and dedication of Canadian artists who have raised the standards
of the music we hear all around us every day.
We want to tip our hat to Joani
Taylor, a long-time friend of
Ben and Jock, who is receiving
some of this well-earned recognition. In addition to her immense
talent, Joani is one of the world's good souls with an enthusiasm for life
that is hard to miss! Her recent album has met with keen critical
success, resulting in her nomination for Jazz Vocalist of The Year at the
Juno Awards. This year's winner in the jazz vocalist category is
Diana Krall, so we think Joani is in pretty good company!
We are thrilled to have recently arranged to have Joani perform at The
Phoenix Auditorium next September, so if a fall visit to The Haven
is in your plans...
Just Quickly...
Isabelle Favreau, Barry Sampson and Peggy Olson have
been spearheading a "Spread The Word" campaign in the Saskatoon area that
is yielding remarkable results. By contacting local organizations,
publications, counsellors and therapists they have opened new doors of
interest in the courses and educational opportunities we offer. We
then follow up with Course Catalogues, articles and information that may
be of specific interest to these groups and individuals. Isabelle,
Barry, and Peggy are just one example of how valuable your contributions
can be in heightening the profile of The Haven, and we appreciate
beyond words the difference your efforts are making. Thank you!
And speaking of Saskatoon, Monica Milas has graciously offered
to facilitate a monthly Staying Alive group for people in the Saskatoon
area! Since receiving her Diploma in Counselling Monica has been
co-leading on-going Staying Alive sessions in Regina. Several people
have already expressed an interest in participating in this new Staying
Alive, so call Barry Samson, (306) 244-1461, for more information.

Our congratulations to Paule and Don Hutton on their March 6th wedding!
It was almost 3 years ago that they met while Paule was working on secondment
from the federal government to assist as Don says "Yukoners finally being
able to take control of our own destiny", a project that has been near
to his heart for many years. On April 1 Paule became the Director
of Corporate Affairs for Tourism and Culture while Don moved to a new position
as Assistant Deputy Minister of Sustainable Resources, which will include
responsibility for Forestry, Agriculture and Land Planning and Management.
We are excited for the Yukon to have people of such passion helping to
shape what is to come.
