Earlybird Is In Hand!
We are thrilled with your response to our new 'Earlybird' discount
structure! This looks to be our highest enrolments in February for
several years! Many course registrants are being in touch sooner,
and commenting that with all the planning and paperwork out of the way,
registration and check-in on arrival is a much easier, more relaxed experience.
Course leaders are finding their preparations more effective knowing the
numbers of course attendees, and travel plans for everyone seem more cost-effective
as well.
The roots of the Earlybird idea came from suggestions offered by course
participants. For us, this is further evidence of a growing spirit
of involvement in The Haven that is becoming more noticeable these days.
The abundance of good ideas and goodwill that has emerged in volunteer
groups across Canada, the U.S. and beyond is heartening and exciting.
We are seeing the spirit of the ideas presented here come to life as people
communicate, resonate and relate with each other, and ultimately this results
in new approaches, possibilities and opportunities. Just one example
is...
Last year Denise Goldbeck and her family spent Spring Break here
and talked with us about how much easier it was to get a room at this time
compared with the summer! Several parents that have enjoyed bringing
their kids to Dance & Games in the past, and sometimes found it difficult
to fit this popular course into their summer plans, have asked us if we
would consider adding another D&G to our schedule. And finally,
Morag
Ruckman, our Registrar, suggested to us that parents might find it
less expensive to bring their children to a Dance & Games in the Spring
Break when our room rates are lower. The result of these ideas coming
from three different sources, with different perspectives is our Spring
Break Dance &
Games For Kids with Denise Goldbeck, March 16 to 21!
Takin' It To The Streets
After the encouraging response to our participation in public shows
last year we are planning to do more of the same in 2003. We have
found these opportunities are an ideal avenue to introduce people to The
Haven; talking in a one-to-one setting, personalizing the information we
have to offer about courses and ideas, and addressing different interests
for different individuals. It is also a great way to familiarize
friends that may be interested in knowing more about The Haven Institute
and our courses.
Up first is The Wellness Show in Vancouver from February 28
to March 2 at The Vancouver Trade & Convention Centre. In
addition to displaying our new Course Catalogue and talking to people about
what makes The Haven such a unique experience, we will be sponsoring two
seminars as part of the Show. Cathy and Ernie McNally will
be presenting 'The Relationship Dynamic' Saturday March 1 at 5:30pm, and
Lyn
MacBeath and Tom Northcott's insights into 'The Joy of Aging' will
be on Sunday at 2pm.
General Admission is $8.50 and a 3-Day Pass is $17.00, Seniors and Students
are $7.00, Children 6 to 15 yrs are $4.00, 5 & under are free.
Tickets available at Ticketmaster or at the door. You can save $2
off admission with a coupon from any Pharmasave location. More information
is available at

Drop by and say hello!
The following weekend we are at The Westcoast Women's Show at
Beban Park Auditorium in Nanaimo, March 7 to 9. Last year
we were amazed with the turnout for this event with over 4,000 in attendance.
Women and men from all over the island (and some from the Lower Mainland!)
dropped by our display, chatting with us about ideas, courses, and education/career
possibilities. This year a Deluxe Weekend Retreat at The Haven (including
private massage sessions with Elfi Dillon-Shaw and Gary Dillon!)
will be the Grand Prize for the show, ensuring that two lucky people will
get to put their feet up and bask in the pleasures of The Haven.
There is no truth to the rumour that we plan to stuff the entry box with
our own names...though that's not a bad idea! Again, we would love
to see you there, and we are happy to chat with any interested friends
you think may be interested in checking out The Haven...and winning a weekend
on us!
March Into Spring
Even the buds in the garden and on the trees are poking at new possibilities!
Pause and consider, come and see, wonder and discover!
Please note, we are changing our format for this section of The Update.
>From now on, we will list the upcoming courses, leaders, and dates for
the next two months. We realize that with the sheer number of courses
we offer in a two-month period (24 courses, from 2 to 25 days, covering
parenting, family, relationships, self discovery, clinical studies, depression,
body awareness, communication, workplace issues, personal health and more!)
the Update will quickly become just a tad shorter than Tolstoy's complete
works. To read a complete description of the course and leader, simply

1000 Words
Last December's trip to Hong Kong to present Come Alive, and to Taiwan
for Come Alive and Beyond New Horizons was filled with special memories
for Ben, Jock, Joann Peterson, Linda Nicholls, Wendy Huntington
and Cathy and Ernie McNally. The simplicity of people being
together came in waves, regardless of whatever apparently makes us different,
as hearts reached beyond language and tradition to connect. The importance
of these moments, and the gift they could be, given the world events hovering
over us these days, lives on in many ways.
When
we received a collection of pictures the other day from one of the Hong
Kong participants, we were struck with the oneness and connection that
seemed to stream from one picture to the next. We spoke of the many
times we have all looked back on pictures that captured moments for which
there are sometimes no words. We want to share one of our captured
moments with you, and invite you to pull out your own pictures of 'courses-past'
and revisit the pleasure of 'being with'. With a world on the brink
of attack, we may do well to remember what is possible between people with
the courage to reach.
Just Quickly...
...Thirty-four amateur string players from as far away as Edmonton
and Washington State were here for the second annual Gabriola String Ensemble
Retreat February 7 to 10. A highlight of the weekend was an extraordinary
concert in Phoenix Auditorium with featured instructors Mary Sokol Brown,
Andrew Brown, Jeanette Singh, and Zoltan Rozsnyai. The ambience of
The Haven blends very well with the spirit of the arts and music aficionados,
and you will likely hear more about Arts Retreats here in the future!
...Testimonials are a wonderful way of sharing experiences from one
participant to another. We are in the process of re-vamping our Testimonial
web page, and if there is a word or two you would like to share about your
experience at The Haven, or courses you have attended, we would love to
hear from you! Please email us at
manager@haven.ca
and include whether you prefer us to use your name or initials if we publish
your words.
That's a wrap for this Update. We'll be in touch again next month
with more news and information about the courses, events and people that
are The Haven.
Take care, enjoy yourself, and each other, and be in touch soon.
