They're At The Post!
The Spring 2003 Shen is in the mail to all of you on our Shen
mailing list. The subject of creativity has been part of many conversations
at The Haven over the past year, and it may not surprise you that
it has also found its way into this Shen. The inaugural Phase IV:
The Creative Phase, a 'creative' slant to aging and relating, Ellery Littleton's
transformation of I Ching into contemporary poetry, and Ben and Jock's
unique approach to 'semi-retirement' are just a few of the topics included
in this Shen that embrace and explore the many forms of creative expression.
Shen is also available on the web at
www.haven.ca/us/shen/
. In addition to all of the articles in this current issue, you will find
links to past issues. This is a great way to pass along particular
items you think may be of interest to others.
What If...
During the recent Reflections the group discussed ways to spread the
word about The Haven and our coming courses and events. In
the ensuing conversations several interesting points and ideas were raised.
For example,
everyone in the room had first heard of The Haven
by
word-of-mouth! As we continued the discussion it became clear that
many did not know that, though our courses usually have good attendance,
we want to increase the number of participants coming here. One person
said, "I have always assumed that you had all the students you wanted",
and many in the room agreed.
It is this desire to increase course attendance that has led to establishing
a focused marketing team and creating a volunteer team to support this
intention. If you are interested in offering your volunteer assistance
in any way that works for you, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator
Patricia Henderson at patricia@haven.ca
and she will give you more information.
It is not our intention to 'hard-sell', rather we want to find ways
to provide information to those who may be interested in learning about
The
Haven and what we have to offer. To this end we are expanding
our advertising; putting displays (Course Catalogues, Shen, brochures,
Keeper Kards) in bookstores and other retail outlets; participating in
conferences, trade shows, and speaking at public events.
And we are still aware that personal recommendations and word-of-mouth
are the best advertising there is. With this in mind, we have a
'What
If'. What if you decided to tell two people you know about
The Haven, your experiences here, and what you think we have to offer?
And what if the people you speak with are interested in learning
more? If you send us their email or street mail address, (with their
permission) to the attention of Patricia Henderson, we will send them an
information package. Then our word of mouth will be stronger than
ever! If you decide to try this experiment, we would love to know
about your experience in speaking with others. Send a quick email
with your story to Ernie McNally at
manager@haven.ca
and let us know!

Making Changes
For almost 20 years, and in many ways, Linda Nicholls has been a key
part of The Haven. Linda has recently made the decision to
lead fewer courses here, and wanted to be able to express directly the
reasons behind this choice.
An Open Letter From Linda Nicholls
As I go through a multi-dimensional change-of-life phase,
I am evaluating my priorities around balancing my being with my doing.
Over the past several years I have been living and working away from
home frequently for extended periods of time, particularly at The Haven.
I am acting now on my priority to slow down and settle more in my own home
in Vancouver.
In this regard, I have made the heartrending decision to withdraw
from leading Phase I and Phase II, Disengaging Depression, Effective Boundaries
and Mirroring.
I have been dedicated to the growth and prosperity of The Haven since
the mid-80s and will certainly continue contributing. I still lead
Shadow Play; Relationships: Review & Renew; Come Alive; Come Alive
thru Video; Come Alive II; Teens Alive; Separation & Loss; Obsession,
Obsession, Obsession; Body, Breath & Energy Training; and Transitions.
I am continuing to serve on the Advisory Board and the Core Faculty.
In support of The Havens Vancouver presence, when I am at home I
will be offering Staying Alive, occasional short workshops and be available
for some counseling, coaching, consulting.
I value my work, and those of you that I work with at The Haven,
so I am making this announcement to include you in my decisions.
We are happy for Linda, and all of us, that she has reached this
decision in a way that works for her, and continues her active involvement
here.
Thats a wrap for this Update. We'll be in touch again next month
with more news and information about the courses, events and people that
are The Haven.
Take care, enjoy yourself, and each other, and be in touch soon.
