The Haven News, October 2002

The Haven in a Month
So here's the picture...As part of the preparation for each Haven News Update we take a look at what courses are coming in the next month and pass along some hi-lites and information about topics and leaders.  Sometimes in the busy of our days we take for granted the bounty that lies right under our noses.  When we paused to look at November at The Haven, every ounce of eloquent expression rose to the fore...and out came "Wow!"  No less than fifteen courses  all touching on key components that can enhance the quality and understanding of our lives  lead by a range of talented and respected group of leaders as diverse as the courses they offer.  And within each course there is the thread of the central theme of the essence of courses at The Haven  relationship.

Consider.  If you are interested in enriching the nature of your relationships, primary, personal and/or professional, Dynamic Dialogue, Anger, Boundaries & Safety, Relationships, and Couples in Conflict each touch on distinct aspects of "being with". Awakening To The Healer Within  and Awakening Your Erotic Body each take a look at the body/mind relationship from different perspectives.  Discover the pleasures of personal expression through creativity in The Quantum Laugh, Infusing Your Life With Creativity,Primal Nudgings and The Power of Self-Hypnosis & the Magic of Belief.  Finding acceptance for our unique ways of being is explored through Self-Compassion and Creative Mythmaking.  Those in the "helping" professions will gain greater insights into the dynamics of nurturing from within while caring for others through our new addition to the Professional Training Series, Tools For The SoulTM with acclaimed author and presenter Phil Winkelmans.  And at the root of it all is the first-time and return-for-a-reminder core program that continues to be the most popular and enduring course at The Haven Come Alive.

What may not occur for you as you read is the dedication, passion and creativity of the people that have nurtured these courses into existence.  The titles you read in the paragraph above are the result of years of discoveries, learnings, ideas, what-if's and a belief in what is possible when people like you take the time to come together and discover ways to live a richer, more thoughtful and engaging life.  Each month is it's own unique mix of these people and the opportunities their courses offer.  In November the people that have created this remarkable collage of courses are Leslie Whyte , Dianne Anderson , Judy Sellner, Gwen Ewan, Wayne Dodge, Marlyn Farrell, Jim Sacamano, Phil Winkelmans, Lee Pulos, Carol Ames, Elfi Dillon-Shaw, Gary Dillon, Mary Holdgrafer, Wendy HuntingtonJoann Peterson, Carole Fast, Linda Nicholls and Ben & Jock.

One of the beauties of The Haven is that we are blessed with over sixty active and contributing faculty members.  They come from Canada, the US, Europe and Asia; they have lived, studied and worked in every possible setting you can imagine; they are in the prime of youth and saged with wizened years; they are quiet and ebullient, thoughtful and funny.  And what lives in all of them is a passion for life and relationship which intertwines with the spirit of all who participate at The Haven, making it what it is  unique, alive, evolving and making a difference.  And in a world laced with Bali, Maryland and 9/11 this is a significant and important difference.

What is Love?Edith Wallace photoBen & Jock photo
For several years the Burnaby Family Life Institute has been at the forefront of increased awareness and services for families that are dealing with a plethora of life issues.  To support these endeavours, and to raise funds, this enterprising group of people has invited Ben & Jock and Edith Wallace to present an evening of ideas, information and music on November 8.  The theme they have chosen is "What is Love"?

Ben & Jock will present and discuss the various shifting interpretations of these words while Edith illustrates these meanings with songs.  With tenderness, forthright sharing, humour, thoughtful insights and provocative possibilities these three will craft a collaboration unique in its content and composition.

This fundraising event for the United Way Campaign in support of disadvantaged families living in poverty begins at 7:30pm Friday November 8 in the Confederation Community Centre, 4585 Albert Street in Burnaby.  General admission is $15, tax-deductible receipts will be issued, and tickets are available through the Burnaby Family Life Institute at 604-659-2200.

...a good cause, a fascinating and timely topic, an evening with Ben & Jock, great music, the delightful Edith Wallace, a tax-deductible receipt...yup, that pretty much covers it!  So make a note of the date, and make it a date to be there!

Start The Year-End At The Haven
We touched on the depth and breadth of what"s coming in our opening article, now here are some details on a few of the opportunities offered in our up-coming courses.

  • Dynamic Dialogue (November 7-10) Carole Fast extends an invitation to embark on an inward journey through engagement with others for an in-depth exploration of the creative process of effective communication.
  • Anger, Boundaries & Safety (November 7-10)  Joann Peterson's book of the same title continues to be one of our best sellers in The Haven Store.  For good reason.  This is among the most challenging aspects of personal awareness, and the course (and book) offer a rare chance to explore our relationship with anger, and it's distinction from violence, in a personal, and respectful manner.
  • Infusing Your Life With Creativity (November 10-13)  Mary Holdgrafer and Wendy Huntington encourage you to discover the bounds of your imagination  and to explore and nurture your intuitive abilities to create.  Experience a deeper connection to your personal wisdom as insights to your own creative spirit emerge.  This is one of those wonderful experiences that will sneak up and delight you.  You will thank yourself a thousand times over for saying "yes" to you, your inherent creativity and these 4 days.
  • The Quantum Laugh (November 15-17)  It is hard to know what is the best part of this new course.  Is it spending time with the possibility that humour and laughter can be an awareness elixir?  Is it finding new ways to tease out the funny side of being who we are?  Or is it the pleasure of a weekend exploring all of the possibilities with the sparkle and spirit of Carol Ames?  Come find out for yourself!!
  • Awakening Your Erotic Body (November 15-17)  The same energy that makes us lovers also makes us healers of others and ourselves.  Elfi Dillon-Shaw and Gary Dillon invite you to demystify and honour erotic energy as the hugely creative, healing life force it is, and discover the nuances and nature of the sexual energy, or better, the "pleasure power" within each cell of our body.
  • The Power of Self-Hypnosis & the Magic of Belief (November 15-17) Lee Pulos is a national treasure.  This world leader in the potential of the human mind, and the human being, will be here again offering ways to create the quality of life we want through the strength of our beliefs.  This is a rare opportunity to experience in a close and personal setting what many around the world have only heard about in Lee's large-hall lectures.

Healing With HeartDavid Raithby photo
The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is very proactive in it's approach to counseling people with MS concerning the number of actions possible for a quality choiceful life.  Symposiums are held across the country addressing the issues and resources at hand for those in the midst of MS.  Friday and Saturday, November 15 and 16 the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown will be the home of a diverse and interactive look at living with Multiple Sclerosis, Taking Charge.  Healthy Choices For Persons With MS, and the event will have a distinct Haven flavour.

Bruce Lipton, co-leader with Lee Pulos of The Biology of Belief And The Energy of Belief at The Haven last April (and back again next April!) is the Keynote Speaker for the Friday sessions.  His talk and discussion is entitled Your Health and Destiny, Is It In Your Genes, Or In Your Environment and Perceptions?.  David Raithby, facilitator of several primary and core programs at The Haven, as well as being a key member of our Core Faculty and the Board of Advisors will be front and centre Saturday afternoon as he presents and then facilitates discussion on the possibilities of Healing With Heart, Body, Breath & Energy.

The Haven will also have a display booth, with members of our faculty and Diploma graduates on hand to talk about courses at the Institute, and the contributions that awareness, choice and relationship can make to the quality of life.  These ideas will be in support of the personal stories shared by many speakers at the symposium who have faced the challenge of MS and moved beyond to significant recovery by taking charge of their lives.

You can learn more, and get tickets for the Symposium at 604-689-3144 in the Lower Mainland, or 1-800-268-7582 outside the Lower Mainland.

What a Great Idea!
Marlyn Farrell is a resourceful and talented woman who has introduced people to the wonders of their creative passions for many years.  Her Primal Nudgings course (you will also find more information at Marlyn's website http://members.shaw.ca/primalnudg/primal.html) has been the source for many women who have used movement, writing, songs, story telling, clay sculpting, guided meditation, and the pleasure of their own sacred inner journeys to discover the joy of creativity through exploring their feminine as well as masculine natures.  We are very pleased that Marlyn will be part of the faculty for next spring's first Phase IV: The Creative Phase.

In conversation with Marlyn the other day, we discussed the idea of inviting participants coming to her November 22-24 Primal Nudgings course to come a day early and attend the Tom Kimmel Concert at The Phoenix Auditorium on the 21st   This way you can take advantage of the special concert ticket prices for course participants, as well as our special 10% room discount for the night of the concert.  We thought this was a great idea, and we have decided to extend this offer to those of you who are coming for Awakening the Healer Within, and Self-Compassion, which are also beginning on November 22.  When you call to register, just mention that you want to come a day early, and get the "Participant Price" for the concert and room.

You can learn more about the Tom Kimmel Concert, and the Fall Concert Series at http://www.haven.ca/us/update/vol1/issue08.html

Just Quickly...
Off on the Orient Expression. Ben & Jock are off to Asia this December to lead a Come Alive in Hong Kong and Come Alive and Beyond New Horizons courses in Taipei.  Making the trip as well to assist with the Come Alive sessions will be Linda Nicholls, Joann Peterson, Wendy Huntington and Cathy & Ernie McNally.

Our heartfelt congratulations to Paul Robillard & Gill Reading on their October 12 wedding.  With close family and friends gathered, they spoke simply and elegantly of their loving and care.  Then after a day of celebration and time alone...they picked up their hammers and went back to building their new home on Gabriola Island!

Transitions Dates Correction.  In the Fall issue of Shen we printed incorrect dates for Maria Gomori and Linda Nicholls' new Transitions course.  The correct dates are January 13-19, 2003.  This 6-day program offers the opportunity to explore and appreciate with self-compassion every one of your life experiences as a foundation for creating the future that you want.  In addition you may become aware of the strengths and weaknesses that you can use as tools to transform your life, acknowledge the meaning of your life up to the present, and define and accept the conscious and unconscious beliefs that have shaped your actions.  By transforming beliefs of helplessness, low self-worth, fear and past limitations you may reconstruct your existence and create a life that is congruent with your deeper yearnings, your spirituality and your karma.  And whatever the topic, being with and learning from these two dynamic women is a treat all on it's own!

That's a wrap for this Update.  We'll be in touch again next month with more news and information about the courses, events and people that are The Haven.

Take care, enjoy yourself, and each other, and be in touch soon.
