The Haven News, September 2002

World-Renowned Life & Longevity Pioneer Coming!Norm Shealy photo
If you take a look at The Haven Schedule, there is something called "Youth and Health" slated for October 11-13.  The course leader is listed simply as "Shealy".  If you take a look at the Course Description on the website you will read "It has been known for at least 25 years that 85% of illnesses are preventable, as they are the result of lifestyle. We will focus on a variety of scientifically proven approaches to youth and health."  This is the understated tip of the iceberg...
"Shealy" is C.Norman Shealy M.D.,Ph.D.  Coming to The Haven is a true world leader in an amazing range of healthy life-living and pain research discoveries and innovations that read like a "what's-what" of scientific and lifestyle achievements!  In the past 35 years Norm Shealy has:

  • 1967  Introduced concept of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS (now used world-wide). And, developed the First dorsal column stimulator implanted in a human being (still used world-wide).
  • 1971  Began first comprehensive, multimodal "Pain Rehabilitation Center" (concept now used world-wide).
  • 1972  Introduced acet rhizotomy (now used world-wide).  Began first biofeedback training program for chronic back pain.
  • 1975  Originated concept of Biogenics® - systemic "software" for teaching sensory biofeedback.  Workshops now given to over 25,000 persons.
  • 1977  Demonstrated effectiveness of Tran cranial electrical nerve stimulation (CES) in treating depression and in stabilizing serotonin metabolism.
  • 1978  Organized and was Founding President of American Holistic Medical Association.
  • 1981  Founded Holos Institutes of Health, an organization dedicated to research and clinical services in holistic medicine, pain and stress management.
  • 1986  Introduced concept of neurochemical profiling  importance of the ratios of serotonin, nor-epinephrine, beta-endorphin, and cholinesterase to one another as keys to neurochemical imbalances in depression and pain.
  • 1991  Demonstrated that all chronically depressed patients have deficiencies or imbalances in essential amino acids.
  • 1992  Demonstrated that depressed patients can be taught to use their own intuition to resolve emotional distress.
  • 1993  Demonstrated that microwave resonance can be generated in a special chamber used for homeostasis.
  • 1994  Discovered unique technology for restoration of DHEA.  Patent obtained
  • 1997  Demonstrated restoration of DHEA with specific food supplements.  Patent obtained.
  • 1999  Patent obtained on most effective pain control TENS device. And, demonstrated that Yinergy OilTM raises intracellular magnesium and serum DHEA. (Dr Shealy claims Yinergy OilTM combined with other treatments should extend healthy life to an average of 140 years and raises the possibility of regeneration of the spinal cord.)
  • 2000  Demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the Ring of Air raises neurotensin.  Patent obtained.
  • 2001  Patent obtained on enhancement of neurotensin with stimulation.
Ben and Jock speak with great respect for Norm Shealy and his life-mission to extend and enhance the quality of life through scientific advancement and spiritual enrichment.  Call today, this weekend course may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and learn from this remarkable man.

Get Autumn-aided at The Haven
OK, OK, bad pun, and don't let that keep you from coming this fall.  The autumn months are a splendid time on the island, filled with a host of opportunities to connect  with yourself, with others, and with The Haven.

  • Practicum: Level I (October 3-6)  Designed by Joann Peterson for Interns, Assistants, Group Workers and Clinicians, Practicum learning uses a "hands-on" approach to refine known skills and develop new skills.  Different from issues addressed in Clinical Interventions, this training course will focus on creating greater ease and dimension in leading personal experiential work.
  • Couples in Conflict (October 4-6)  By offering this course several times a year, Judy Sellner ensures that each couple will have quality opportunities to work together as a pair, in a small group setting with much individual attention, in addition to a private counselling session with Judy to deal with their own particular issues.
  • Youth and Health (October 11-13)  As we mentioned in out lead article, this deceptively titled course is a goldmine of experiential information and exploration with one of the world's truly unique human beings.  Spend some time seeing the possibilities through the mind's eye of the fascinating, and very alive, Norm Shealy.
  • ABC's of Change (October11-13) Susan Clarke and CrisMarie Campbell introduce a map for transforming resistance, fear and anxiety and taking a leadership role on your own behalf.  By gaining Awareness of your Attitude, Breathing and identifying underlying Beliefs, you can find the Courage to make new Choices, have fun and feel good along the way!
  • Phase II: Self & Other (October 12-November 6)  OK.  You have thought about it every year since you took Phase I, probably even figured out who would look after the kids, or the cat (or your partner!).  And somehow, each year, it just didn?t seem to fit.  Make this the year for your "self", and the "others" in your life.
  • Embracing Personal Passion(October17-20)  In this dynamic course with both experiential and theoretical elements, David Raithby begins by defining "Passion", looking at our holding patterns and using body/breath release work; Closed-eye exercises; Gestalt work; Group discussion, music and many other energetic methods of self-discovery to encourage exploration of belief and behaviour patterns.
  • Sex and Identity(October 18-24) A sensitive and respectful investigation of the multi-faceted nature of this impactful topic.  Presented by members of The Haven Core Faculty, participants take part in group discussions and lectures, augmented by audio-visual aids, as well as a series of experiential exercises intended to bring greater understanding to this ever-present aspect of our lives.

Many Hands...
Our new website and domain name are now alive, up and running  www.haven.ca is a reality!  We are not finished, and will likely be forever adding and tweaking as new information and ideas come along.  At the risk of sounding cliché, there really are many people to appreciate for their input, skills and many, many hours of hard work.  Thank you all, for your suggestions, insights, feedback, and the time you spent contributing to the website's transformation (websites don"t change, they just become more aware and transform!)

The Haven on the Tour
For the first time The Haven Store will be part of the Gabriola Island Gallery Tour scheduled for the October long weekend.  As the store grows and finds it's niche, we have been very pleased with the response to the selection of wares available here.  Ranging from delicate jewelry to commanding driftwood carvings, these creations come from many talented hands  our staff, members of our faculty and student body, and several islanders as well.

The Tour takes the form of a map of the island showing the location of each gallery, studio and store, together with a brief description of each artist and store.  Growing every year, 2003 will showcase 65 craftspeople at 48 island venues.  The entire weekend is alive with visitors and islanders checking out as many stops as they can pack into their day!  Is it any wonder that Gabriola is "The Island of the Arts"?

Just Quickly...
New Folks...we are thrilled with the quality of people that are joining The Haven staff.  New faces greeting you at the Front Desk and on the phone are Elizabeth and Val; assisting Morag to guide you through course sign-up and information is Melissa; stepping into the challenging role of Conference Coordinator is Valou, and a new old friend has returned to the fold Louise Amuir is back as our Food and Beverage guru!

Congratulations to Gil Hayward, who recently won a "CTC", a prestigious Community Theatre Award  for Best Actor in last year's play "Aladdin" at The Metro Theatre in Vancouver.  This achievement reflects Gil's many years of fine live theatre performance.  Well done!

Mother Nature's Station...every now and then, one of nature's creatures decides that The Haven would be a fine place to take up residence.  Over the years, we have been blessed with several challenging visitors, and to date our amazing maintenance team has kept them at bay without any loss of life (for them or us!).  A few weeks ago a river otter discovered the view and convenience afforded by the Lodge's front deck.  Several unsuccessful suggestions later, Xanon and crew found a powerful antidote that sent the otter scurrying back to the water...CBC Radio.  Not just any radio station mind you, only CBC, played for an unrelenting 24 hours.  That was all it took, all the otter could take.  So the next time you wonder about your hard-earned tax dollars?

That's a wrap for this Update.  We'll be in touch again next month with more news and information about the courses, events and people that are The Haven.

Take care, enjoy yourself, and each other, and be in touch soon.
