An exploration of the self and family using the Satir Method
|
Virginia Satir created healing and integrating processes to help make sense of ourselves and others. Her objective was to facilitate personal growth and congruence—leading to individuals becoming ‘more fully human.’ This, she believed, would directly impact the ability of human beings to connect and live together in harmony…and ultimately secure peace and the survival of our planet.
Having an appreciation of our past and the resources we developed to cope with our family of origin is the purpose of this journey. What was useful in the past may not be useful today—we can trap ourselves with old patterns of coping.
In this course you will be guided through experiences with a variety of Satir Model processes leading towards greater understanding of your internal processes, yearnings, expectations, feelings, copings and behaviours.
 Our behaviours are only the tip of the iceberg… Explore the deep layers and access your hidden resources.
You can:
- become clearer about your own source of identity, autonomy and boundaries
- feel safer in taking risks to explore new ways of living
- become freer to experience the flow of your life energies
- achieve your highest potential
- let go of what no longer fits
- access your inner strengths and abilities
- be self-responsible
- connect with your creative energies and move in new directions, gaining deeper recognition and acceptance of ‘self’ and others

Satir Processes incorporate psychodrama, gestalt, guided imagery, accessing the unconscious, sculpting, and working in triads—all within the framework of the family system and the special beliefs underlying Virginia Satir’s approach to the human being. They are applicable both to individuals for personal awareness and growth, and professionals for including in their methods of working with individual clients, groups or teams.

Satir Foundations—An Introduction to the Underlying Processes of The Satir Model
Participants in this interactive 3-day course will become familiar with their Family Map, Family Chronology, and Circle of Influence; explore Family Rules and learn how to transform them into Guidelines; learn and practice Satir’s Communication approaches. Along with these practical learning objectives, participants will be introduced to the Beliefs and Vision of Virginia Satir.
Facilitator: Cathy McNally BSc, Dip C, The Haven Institute Core Faculty, Cathy has embraced Satir’s processes since first being introduced to them by Maria in 1990 at The Haven. |

In honour of its 25th Anniversary, Psychotherapy Networker magazine—partnering with Columbia University—conducted the largest survey of American Clinicians ever funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, asking the question: “Who were the people over the last 25 years who have most influenced your practice?" Virginia Satir came in at number five among the top ten. The article goes on to describe her as ‘a giant amongst therapists’ and as ‘an evangelist, for a vision of Family Therapy as the means of healing a wounded world.’ The Haven is fortunate to have been closely associated with Virginia Satir; she presented two workshops a year from 1982 to her death in 1988.

Course Evaluation:
A student/participant who attends a minimum of 90% of the total course sessions shall receive a "Pass" grade. A student/participant who is absent for more than 10% of the session will receive an "Incomplete" grade and credit will not be granted.
