Communication Fundamentals: Self-Awareness in Action!

Why Come to this Communication Course?
For many people, The Haven's Communication Model has been life-changing. For us, our relationship is enriched daily with the endless learning this apparently simple model affords.

Through our reading, conversations and connections we have discovered many other ideas and approaches that compliment and enhance The Haven's Model. Each discovery brings greater clarity and richness to our communication skills, and confirms the fluid simplicity and inclusive qualities of our first learning.

This course includes several of these ideas and approaches in an exciting look at the new and the familiar, along with new looks at the familiar, served up with plenty of time to ask, listen, engage, practice and learn. Join us!

Communications Wheel

Intention

Communication. It is the core of every connection. It is the essence of intimacy. It is the conduit to deepening understanding. It all comes down to a life-long quest for clarity-within, and with others.

We have learned about it all our life, it is often the first information presented in life-skills and personal awareness courses. And if we open to the rewards it has to offer, communication can be the key to a life blessed with rich relationships. This course is a golden opportunity to enhance your skills and deepen your understanding of the nuances and gifts of communication-and enrich all your relationships in ways you never imagined.

You will emerge from Communication Fundamentals with clear, 'felt' experiences of the elements of communication, including how to check for understanding, and how to clear up misunderstanding. You will learn a framework to work with when experiencing times of stress to maintain clear communication when it is most important to do so. In the process of learning to communicate more clearly with others, you will gain increased awareness and understanding of who you are; the nature of your own feelings, the filters you apply to the meanings you make, and your communication patterns and habits.

Action
Using a variety of settings and situations, you will learn the exciting possibilities waiting to be unlocked with the keys to communication. And, perhaps most importantly, you will have many hands-on opportunities to practice, discuss and gain feedback as you transform communication from a concept to a skill.

Key Figure Pic Though the clear and obvious objective of this course is 'communication', a significant plus of the process is increased self-awareness of patterns, tendencies and habits. And by revisiting familiar perspectives on communication, and considering new ones, you will gain insights to the myriad ways you can benefit virtually every aspect of your life, every day through enhanced communication skills and self-awareness.

In a fun, dynamic and engaging way you will deepen and discover, laugh and learn, explore and express as you gain greater understanding of the elements you use to create your own unique perspectives on your life experiences. It is these personal experiences that will provide the learning ground for greater understanding of the components of the communication process.

You will leave this course in action, with practical ways to continue what you have begun!

Testimonials:
"Anyone interested in more contact, richer relationship, especially people who might be hesitant about 'intense' courses or being probed [should come to this course]. You work with such heart and kindness that I would recommend this as a first course with confidence."

"[This course gave me a] strong awareness of self-responsibility - what I 'm willing to put in is directly related to what I get out. Generally most excellent."
January 2008

"I learnt about the importance of suspending, how my unawareness of my filter stands in my way of communicating and connecting. I learnt that I can have my irritations with a person and still connect with him as a human being.I believe my learnings will benefit me in my personal and professional life."
January 2008

"I 'got' how important being in contact and connection with people is, in respect to learning and growing. I also experienced how big by fear is and, in the supporting environment, gained a little courage and a lot of clarity in what's required of me if I want to be alive, thriving, and living in love."
January 2008

"I have been deeply moved in my course interactions and have a much clearer intention of where I want my life to go now. I know the areas of communication I need to concentrate on in the great journey forward I have embarked on. Ernie and Cathy are two exceptional individuals who do an outstanding job. More people need to be here. Thank you."
January 2008

"Finally I can put the pieces together and, from the exercises and discussion, bring this inside and live it not just think it. I would recommend this course to anyone who comes to The Haven. Also would suggest that this be required for all interns. I really appreciate all your effort and YOU."
January 2008

"Beyond expectations, the juice that drives Haven core principles."
January 2008

"I loved teasing apart the mechanics of communication. We used our lives as a resource for learning more about our styles of communication. I discovered a lot of very new stuff for myself about how I interact with the world. I think I'll have more conversations that connect in a genuine way than I did before. I think this intensive look at the communication model might transform some of my challenging professional and familial relationships. If enough of us learned this material we could transform the world. Thanks Cathy and Ernie."
January 2008

"I think I have tied a lot of concepts and ideas together through this course. I have a much more grounded feeling about my work. I think I will be more willing to try the concepts out in the world. The benefit for my personal growth is so big. Thank you, Thank you."
January 2008

"Communication Fundamentals is one of the most profound short courses I have ever participated in at the Haven or anywhere. This last week a fellow participant and I were marveling at how tired we both were when we got home, even though we experienced the course as very gentle and well-paced, even deceptively simple (although I remember what you said Cathy about simple and easy not being the same). We concluded that it was the very deep learning that we were integrating that had left us so exhausted. Right now I am particularly appreciating all the opportunities you gave us to slow down, suspend and learn with all our senses, and with our minds, our hearts and our bodies as well as with each other. Awareness of my "person screens" has also been an important take-home for me."
