Coaching: Engaging Relationships

What is the 'new' coaching?
Coaching is the new buzz. And it answers the following questions...
  • How can I 'help' others when I have the conviction that others must find their own answers in their own way?
  • How can I call forth another's courage and brilliance?
  • How can I invite discovery and growth?
  • How can I be in a helping role with others in a way that honours them, and doesn't make it about me?
  • How do I bring myself to be completely present for a conversation?
As an emerging conversational style in our lives and workplaces, the 'new' coaching is very different from the coaching most of us have experienced on the sports field. This coaching is about creating a space for others in which they do their work and learning. It is about being there with the other person from a place of curiosity and heart. It is about supporting the other and participating in the exploration of personal patterns — life enhancing and life contracting. It's about bringing the full strength of being present and embodied — mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally — to be in support of others in their journey.

Where does "Coaching: Engaging Relationships" fit with the learning and philosophy of The Haven?
The Haven excels in learning through experientially based courses devoted to understanding and acceptance of the self and others. "Coaching: Engaging Relationships" is an exploration in joining the ideas, experience and learning at The Haven with the tools of focused conversation to equip us to engage and support others. At The Haven, we recognize that being in intentional relationship contributes powerfully to our own life and growth. In focused coaching conversations, we learn how to 'turn up the volume' of being wholly and intentionally present with others. We will learn a structure to map and track the energetic dialogue to client defined actions and outcomes.

What is the learning format?
In an experiential setting, exercises, activities and group discussion explore bringing body, mind, spirit and emotion into focused conversations with others. Supervised practice coaching facilitates the learning of energy/body/mind based techniques. Immediate feedback, group dialogue and personal work support individual integration of the learning.

Who can use Coaching?
To the extent our life and work involve teaching, leading, managing, helping, parenting, enrolling, engaging, or just being in primary relationship — coaching conversations deepen contact and learning. This course is for you if you wish to:
  • 'Help' others without doing their work
  • Create relationships that support another's learning
  • Deepen your capacity to be present with others
  • Learn more about who you are and how you show up with others
  • Learn how to make the most of yourself in your interactions

Testimonials:
"This course has already been incredibly useful. During the course, I went back to my room one evening and had the opportunity to practice coaching a dear friend who was in turmoil. The results were fantastic."

"I was delighted to be a part of the first Coaching: Engaging Relationships workshop April 14-17. I have been a learner at the Haven for many years and even though the distance is far to travel, I never disappoint myself and always have a rich learning and a meaningful experience. The Coaching workshop provided me an opportunity to crystallize the impact (and pure beauty) on others, of showing up fully present in coaching engagements/conversations. Integrating the Haven approaches and models has been a wonderful complement to my work experience and my learning in the Royal Roads Executive Coaching Certificate program...a real-time opportunity to notch-up skills with deep intrapersonal learning...learning how to be while I do. I can already sense a shift in my approach with others as a business coach and in my close relationships. I was inspired to capture the essence of my own deep learning with a short poem:

Winds of transformation blowing gently forward Currents of energy shifting the sands of time in my internal hour glass The endless forms of self reflecting and dreaming the future into Now"
—JLH April, 2005
