Phase II Intern

Prerequisite:
The interning component of the Phase II course is only open to students in the Level II, Certificate, and Diploma programs. See the Intern Training Program Description

Description:
This course is held concurrently with the Phase II: Self & Other course.

Phase Two, Internship is a 25 day course during which the interns learn by both "doing", including leading a small group each evening (under supervision), and engaging in lecture/ discussion and supervised and coached practice.

The general outline of the day, for the interns (and assistants who have a role in coaching the interns) is to:
  1. 1. attend all Phase Two group sessions (most days, 6 hours of large group, lead by others and approx. 2 hours of small group in the evenings lead by the interns) and
  2. 2. meet with the leaders &/or assistant at:
    • 08:30 each morning for 3/4 hr before the Phase Two class begins
    • 12:45 for 1 hr (between the morning and afternoon classes)
    • 18:45 for 1/2 hr to plan the evening class that the intern leads
    • approx 21:30 for up to an hour to debrief the evening small group
Topics and experiences included in Phase Two internship include:
  • review of all the Phase Two concepts and material as part of the large group format of Phase Two
  • concepts of group formation and leadership/li>
  • tracking the group as well as tracking individuals
  • leading (either alone or with another intern or assistant) a small group for 17 evenings
  • during that small group leadership, run the group and manage it's dynamics, carry out group exercises and conduct individual pieces of work with participants
  • attend leader led individual appointments with those participants who are part of their small group
There are specific blocked times set aside for concentrated intern learning:

First Intern day (lecture/ discussion/ practice)
  1. Practice gestalts and other experiential forms for 1/2 day
  2. 1/2 day lecture and discussion on Sexuality, and on the cycle of abusive relationships
Second Intern day
  1. development of the "self"
Third Intern day
  1. Morning: addictions concepts
  2. Afternoon: topic relevant to this group or group of interns
  3. ...and verbal and written "report cards"
For separate and additional credit, the intern prepares a short (4 to 6 page) paper on group development. This paper relates group development concepts to the development observed in the small group that they led, including how one or more of the participants worked through the stages.

Course Evaluation:
Students shall complete an "Intern Assessment Form" as part of their course requirements. This assessment contains the student's self assessment rating, peer input (Phase I and II only), and is reviewed and completed by the Course Leaders, and signed off by the Director of Education. Included in the Course Leader portion of the form is a graded Leader Assessment on a coded scale from LA1--LA5 representing a range of specific benchmark performance achievements.

A student who does not attend a minimum of 90% of the course sessions shall receive the grade "Incomplete." A student who fails to perform up to the basic benchmark performance level (LA1 on the scale), shall receive the grade "Unsatisfactory." No credit is granted for a course with the grade "Incomplete" Or "Unsatisfactory"
