New Horizons: Phase III
The Conceptual Self

Course for people who:
  • want a deeper understanding of themselves
  • want to enrich the sources of meaning in their lives
  • are at a point of change
  • are health professionals, teachers and other "people helpers" wanting to broaden and deepen their theoretical framework and skills
Description:
An exploration of the many concepts by which each person is defined and then consequently defines him/herself. Through understanding these ideas, there is a broadening of the options available to create one's own reality.

Format:
The program, approximately 25 days long, consists of daily lectures and discussion sessions, with some reading and skill practice assignments in the evenings. Although a reading list is provided, each person will decide for him/herself how much or how little to read.

As a participant in New Horizons, you will be exposed to a wide variety of ideas, systems and thought structures-ways of viewing the world. You will question prejudices, fixed ideas and ideologies. Hopefully, by investigating the nature of your own assumption system, you will free yourself from the idea that there is one particular truth. By coming to articulate your system, you will find it possible to consciously make decisions of whether to keep, discard or change various aspects of it.

New Horizons is designed as the integrative, conceptual segment of the Phase programs which focus on experiential understanding of the self and relationships with others. Although for maximum learning it is highly recommended to take this program in sequence (following Phases I and II), it is possible to take it at any time, bearing in mind individual needs, requirements and capabilities.

In order to accommadate participants who cannot take the full 25 day program, This Phase will be split into two halves. One take can both halves or just part A or Part B. See New Horizons: Part A and New Horizons: Part B to register.

Highlights:

Traditional Chinese Medicine:
The philosophy of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine is a very different system from Western thought. It offers a different perspective for the application of healing practices to one's self and to others.

The Body and Its Energy:
An in-depth presentation of the theory and practice of various body-oriented therapies will expose participants to concepts and experiences of energy blockage and release. The implications for illness and health will be addressed.

Methods For Change:
A variety of techniques will be presented and practiced, such as gestalt, group dynamics, psychodrama, bioenergetics, bodywork and communication skills. This will be useful both to those who work with people as helpers as well as those involved in their own growth process.

Personal Evaluation and Integration:
Participants will spend time integrating into their lives what they have learned so that they will be ready to apply the information in their home and work situations.

Lively Discussions:
Readings, presentations and experiences will provide material for discussions in which participants can use one another as "sounding boards" to help clarify and share their ideas and assumptions about life.

Outcome:
Almost universally, people find this program tremendously exciting and rewarding. Participants who are accustomed to being told "the correct way" find the open, honest and challenging environment freeing and invigorating. Most are amazed at the quantity of material covered and the richness of the ideas that are studied.

Note:
The faculty recommends the completion of "Phase I & II" prior to participation in "New Horizons."

To register for just part of New Horizons, see New Horizons: Part A and New Horizons: Part B.
